  • More facts on Portuguese Water Dogs- You’ve probably seen them on lists of non-shedding dog breeds or even alongside the Obama family, or you’re looking for a family companion to join in on your summer fun at the lake. Now you’re wondering if a Portuguese Water dog would be the right fit for you. They’re intelligent, energetic and independent, but they love their owners and are always up for a snuggle at the end of a long day of playing outside. So - are you ready for a portie? Here is part 2 (sorry I had to split into 2 parts as the sound mysteriously corrupted last week on the second half of the video and you can not edit beyond trimming on TH-cam).

Wonderful overview, thank you, thank you. Plus 100% of what you stated is valid....I know, had a blessed PWD for 13 yrs (simply the BEST dog ever owned!). One qualification, and this applies to most dogs described as 'very active'. It's HOW you train your PWD from puppyhood that is the best predictor of how little or much daily exercise is required. I have discovered with my Sam and a few others, that a brisk 30 min walk daily, plus lots of love/attention is all that's needed. VERY sweet, loving, obedient and FUN for the entire family....good luck to all! Glenn

Glenn again........failed to mention that PWD's don't shed but require monthly grooming/clips ( I loved mine so much I did the grooming, a wonderful bonding experience). Plus they do not smell!!! do not droll! quiet unless perceives danger, and a velcro bond that lasts a lifetime of affectionate/happy moments ie planning to acquire another soon!! Glenn

@@glennb7519 I own a PWD and I can say that they're the most affectionate dogs I've encountered. I love how much personality they offer and how much affection they give to their owner. Also, I know that their fur-type can really depend. My type has a really straight, but still curly fur type, while someone else that I know has a PWD that has purely curley hair, their PWD also have a completely different personality that is a lot more relaxed and calmer than our dog which is very energetic. Whenever I'm feeling down I just think back to how happy my portuguese water dog gets when she sees me walking through the front door :)

They’re amazing dogs! I have a pwd assistance dog in training and he’s doing so well at his job! Very active and loves stimulation and exercise but can switch off when he needs to! Pwd’s are definitely my favourite breed 😍💙

I love my Portuguese Water Dog Google. I got him as a pup, when his mom visiting Jamaica from the UK gave birth to a litter of four. Regrettably I did not have the space to take in more.

Had a good research about this breed for a while now. I'm looking for a dog that will come snorkelling with me in the cornish sea, and will fit on a bodyboard. This breed is absolutely perfect. Luckily I've found a breeder in my town, ukc assured too!

We have a female PWD who is nearly three years old. We got her when she was 8 months old. She had lived with another family and was a rescue. We did not get much information as to why they did not keep her. Siena is very smart and loving. However, she is very aggressive when we take walks or ride in the car. When she sees someone walking (particularly with another dog) she goes ballistic. Also when we have visitors, she can act aggressively though we now have strategies which help. She is a sweetie and very loyal. She is very good with my wife and myself when we are alone. However, we wish that she was better with strangers and on walks. Wondered whether anyone else has had similar experiences. We have had trainers and she is slowly getting better.

I have had similar experiences with my rescue Pug. We got him at 2 years old after 4 homes. He is fear aggressive to most other dogs and strangers, especially males, but so loving with us.He might have been attacked or mistreated or just wasn't socialized in his first 11 weeks- we don't know details. We have done lots of training and behaviour modification for 6 years and have strategies too. He is much better but his life is limited and stressful as we have 22 dogs on our street and a busy park at the end of it. Good luck with your training.

How much time do I need to spend a day playing with my portie

    • @TalentHounds

A lot! Some experts suggest at least 2 long walks/runs and several more play times. Dog sports and swimming could be fun.
