Note: I am making a correction. I showed the wrong harmonic tremor dataset for Raung. In reality, that was the dataset for Rinjani. Thus, you can ignore that small segment of the video.
Original comment: I had kept Raung hovering between my "minor unrest" and "moderate unrest" groupings for some time due to activity which I deemed unusual. Thus, I am sort of glad that it erupted, as it confirmed my observations. While its latest eruption is not likely to be destructive, you should NOT hike to or around the crater rim of Raung at this time.

There's a video out there about the volcano. IIRC, the blue color is due to an extremely high sulphur content, which burns with a blue flame, so the red hot lava covered with blue flame looks blue. I may not have the details right - it's been a while since I watched the video.

Apparently, it's a sulfur fire, due to lava heating, that yields electric-blue flames that flow and give the appearance of melted rock (lava). However, it's stated that real blue lava is possible, but would require extremely high temperatures only found at the Sun's surface and maybe the Earth's Core.

Please explain how past volcano eruption dates are determined

    • @nortyfiner
      @nortyfiner 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Dates of past eruptions can be determined in many ways. Some of the most common are:
      - Stratigraphy (where a layer from a particular eruption lies relative to other geological layers) is probably the most common method. Eruptions are often dated relative to each other in this way; for example, we know Mount Bachelor in Oregon probably hasn't erupted since before the Mount Mazama eruption that formed Crater Lake, because Bachelor is covered by an ash layer from the Crater Lake eruption.
      - Dating radioisotopes in samples of eruption material, such as carbon-14 or argon-40. Which isotopes are used depends on the age and type of material in the samples.
      - Eruption dating can also be informed by anthropology and archaeology, such as historic records, native stories, or human ruins relative to volcanic layers, like Pompeii or Akrotiri.

If there's one thing we can be sure of with volcanism, is that its terribly unpredictable. Even that science is able to monitor active area's closely and come with evacuation-procedures that could prevent a lót of human casualties...the actual intensity and vastness of an eruption is as good as impossible to determine upfront.
Take the Hunga-Tonga eruption as the last 'fine example' of Mother Earth's infathomable power: After studying this eruption, it was classed as a VEI-6: exceeding 10 cubic kilometers of fallout!
..thats 3x as much as the famous Vesuvius Eruption of 79AD, and 10x as much as St Helens in 1980! VEI-6 eruptions are pretty rare to occur!
The last time a VEi-6 occured was 1991 when Punatubo 'manifested' itself over the course of several weeks with intimidatingly lárge pyroclastic flows that quickly turned into 'lahars': enormous mud+ash streams that tore apart entire villages in mere moments!
Before that it was the Krakatoa's famous explosion of 1883, where it literally blew its entire peak off and became a sub-nautical volcano: this was one of the most powerful eruptions in the last 300 years, its only overshadowed by the VEI-7 of 1815's Tambora, who took several MONTHS of unprecedented devastation to cause 150 cubic kilometers of fallout and an explosion that left a 6km wide and 1km deep crater, in the wake of its once 1500-meter hígher summit!...
The frigthening comparison with Hunga Tonga is that all the other VEI-6 or higher eruption occured over a pretty lóng timespan of intense activity!
Hunga-Tonga produced a VEI 6 in merely TEN minutes....
    O.o

People are already so green that they ride bicycles instead of cars. This garbage mountain pollutes more than an entire city.

@@SpaceLover-he9fj In these years, how much pollution did the atmosphere receive from volcanoes? Orders of magnitude more than humanity in years. The weather changes not only because of people and nature. If we look at the ancient history, droughts, drying up of rivers that lasted for years happened many times. Documents from Sumerian and Egyptian times prove it. Then came the extreme cold periods. It is therefore cyclical, influenced by the movement of the sun and the earth - humanity is powerless against them. The green religion has no real effect on it - at most it delays it a little, it cannot be measured in years - unfortunately. Only the development of science and technology can save humanity for a while.
