I know this is an old video. I went from 10 mbps for $50/month to 1 gig for $70/month. I saw a 100x speed increase for $20. It was a no brainer. I’m in KC so we were the google fiber pioneers, but all the traditional isp’s keep trying to send “special” offers but my internet bill hasn’t increased in the 12ish years I’ve had it. That being said my home was wired with cat6 around 2010ish. So I understand we were a unicorn for the time, but now that 10 gbe home networking is so prevalent I am thinking about making the jump to a fiber network upgrade, at least 10gbe to an access level with 1 gb to the pcs.
Great video SpaceRex, I live near Morgan City about 15 minutes from Huntsville and recently got symmetrical gigabit fiber from GoNetspeed it has made the world of difference in everything I do. I used to only get 9.5 Mbps download and 0.85 Mbps upload with DSL but that was terrible and cost me the same price as the fiber package I have now ($85.00). GoNetspeed doesn't even offer more than 1Gb for some reason but like you said it really isn't needed with the server bottlenecks that companies implemented. If I ever move to Huntsville I'm totally getting Google Fiber 100%.
It always amazes me people think they need/want more then 1 gig service at home. I am the IT Manager for a TV station and we only have a 1 gig connection at the station. We send and receive a LOT of video feeds and we still don't saturate our connection but maybe a few times a day.
Just a techy note. I only have one fiber strand going to my home. But unlike copper, which only permits one way direction on a copper strand, you can have different wavelengths on fiber, allowing bi-directional traffic without any collisions.
I upgraded to 2 Gig because in my area it was, at the time, the only way I could use my own router. Being able to use my pfSense firewall and my UniFi access points was at the top of my list. 1 Gig was $70, 2 Gig was $100. I work remotely most of the time from home and I was building out a home lab. I could not go get that fancy coffee 6 times a month and make up the extra $30, so I did the upgrade.
If the metaverse ever takes off, which I would say it's kinda sad, the world is beautiful and spending time in a virtual world is not for everyone. But in case it takes off, maybe then we will need this kinds of speeds to stream assets realtime from zucks servers.
Yeah I wonder what kind of throughput it would need. I am assuming that the assets would be already downloaded so it probably would not require much more bandwidth then a video game (just sending locations of objects rather than textures)
Tried gigabit for a while after my 100/40 connection and didn't really have a need for it. I don't upload, I don't really download and things. In fact, with 3 people, we've been happy with 50. Were also in Australia and links are really important here. If you want a good connection that has good international links; then you need to pay through the nose. You pay a lot regardless but I don't want to pay $200 /month for something id barely utilise.
Great video! Here is one use case, really the only one I can think of, where you may want more than 1 gig. Self hosted VPN (ex Tailscale) for you and maybe a few family members. 5 mobile devices or remote households at 200mbps will eat it up quick. I like the idea of self hosted VPN and taking advantage of your home ngfw, security, etc. You can leverage your hardware and knowledge to help family/friends. I agree upload speed is very important.
Yeah, but that still ends up getting back to the fact that I can't see much of a scenario where myself and 6 of my family members are all on the road and needing to download at 150mbit all at the exact same time. But that is also today. 5 - 10 years from now this is going to be very different
@@SpaceRexWill Yep totally agree. Like I said, that's the only thing I can think of that would have the possibility to stretch the connection for normal users, using for multiple people/households.
@@SpaceRexWill I think that brings up an interesting point. What is to stop somone from then setting up vlan/VPN for other family members to offer them better security/filtering/etc? Grandma/grandpa might not be able to afford or know how to manage a Unifi/NGFW stack, but a raspberry pi VPN back to your network with extra security might keep him from accessing some scammer/phishing sites.
I am getting Google Fiber installed tomorrow and I have the 5 Gig option, but going with the 1. I have a question will the Netgear Nighthawk RAX120 be a good router for Google Fiber? What can I do with the free mesh to use it for a location to hard wire like PS5?
When backing up to the could I bring my HDD and laptop to class. I quietly upload using their new Wi-Fi 6 at 850Mbps. I’m logged in with secure credential certificates so they definitely see my usage and my name. I would love to be a fly on the wall on the IT room. “why has this guy uploaded 10tb just this month!”
I have question … I have ring cameras all around my house , and takes a lot of juice that I had to upgrade on spectrum …because the cameras kept going offline … google fiber is in our area now …. Does it make sense to change to google fiber … will it be able to handle them ? Along with other device Pc laptop and cell phones
@@SpaceRexWill thank you I appreciate you answering me back I know its been a little bit since u made this video ..wow thank you …thats what I needed to know if the google fiber would be good for the cameras all around the house … 👍👍thank you hope your says are well and good hon 👍😄
It's highlighting the crazy corrupt lawlessness that enables these monopoly market of ISPs, highlights the benefits of any Fiber to home line and being honest that for most people 2 gigs is just gonna be a flex. You already spoke about this in the last video but good to see you give limelight to this issue.
I live pretty close to the main land 3 miles. We have fiber but it cost so much I have just 250mb plan I pay 113.45 a month. I now they have 500mb and 996MB aka 1GB I couldn't imagen paying for the 1GB speed unless I'm running a company or production team. Honestly I don't think I need over 250mb plan I can watch 3-4 streaming TV's at once and play on my PC.

Totally agree with you. I have tried and really have not found a good reason other than saving seconds off of a steam download 2x a month

Now you can use your own router
Can I use my own router with 2 Gig?
Yes, you can - by using bridge mode

Chattanooga TN has 10GB fiber access.
Yeah I was up there last weekend and saw that! its nuts!

Always appreciate how you thoroughly explain things in both tech and laymen's terms. Learn a lot from your channel. Thank you!
Telcos give you their 2 Gbps equipment since they assume that consumer grade routers all have 1 Gbps ports (probably true for 98%)
People who want 2gig internet are geeks. They know what they are doing. Not using own equipment is why I will never use att or google fiber
actually, electric power board of Chattanooga fought comcast and won before google fiber was even a thing
Thanks for doing this. Google fibers about to launch in my neighborhood in a few weeks
Tldr;
Not noticably different than 1GB.
Don't want to use Google router.
Connection is not symmetric.

lol uploads really end up being the thing that is important for stuff like that
I pay 25€ for 600/600. While I wouldn't turn down 1Gbit, 600 gets the job done!
600 Gbps would be so good and you can have a data centre w/ that much bandwidth!
What a nice dream. Google fiber ain't never coming to where I live but it's fun to dream about.

All of google fiber plans are now symmetrical in most markets
Issue on fiber etc. Is most users of internet don't even get 100 mb. So You need to remember that
The beauty of fiber is switching speed becomes the limitation rather than equipment in your neighborhood

When I finally direct connect to the JWST, I might utilise 2gig at that stage.
Otherwise, think we got it covered for now. Thanks again Will.
JWST is awesome! When I was out in LA I had the opportunity to see it in the high bay a few times and it’s unbelievable
@@SpaceRexWill Nice one. And to think you were right next to it, and now it's approx 1.5 million kilometers away scanning the universe.

The only time I ever notice it is my TH-cam uploads, other than that is a 'nice to have' once a month
5 gig symmetric is out now
I got 2 gig cause I hate waiting.
Very legitimate concerns. MY HOUSE! MY ROUTER! Eat shet Google!
Hollyshit.....1GB UP AND DOWN :OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I Get 940Mpbs DOWN and 52Mbps UP :/ Ping 20-40 Via Coax...Cable Internet from Vodafone...
Glad that you left California
I dislike Google Fiber commercials
I haven’t ever seen one lol. Google already knows they got me I guess
Google fiber commercial is horrible. They had to edit one of the commercials because he says playing video games weird.
!(: Well said ;)!
You use UniFi? So, you don’t care about security or support. Too bad.
