    Hi,
    So i'm using on my DS920+ the DSM Version: 7.0.1-42218 Update 3, Surveillance Station 9.0-7519 and Advanced Media Extensions 1.1.1-0202. What you are saying regarding h.265 is to do this: "To prevent playback issues caused by the updated support mechanism of Advanced Media Extensions 2.0.0, Surveillance Station 9.0-7519 users must wait for the 9.0 Official release expected in May before updating to DSM 7.1-42661."
    Thanks

    I have had my Synology DS411j for some time now but buying a NAS with more slots is a bit cost prohibitive for me. I heard that Synology had software that would make non-synology hardware usable with DSM. Well, I have an 8-bay computer case and it would be nice to have it run as a Synology NAS. Otherwise, I am faced with using TruNAS (not a bad product, I just would like to be consistent).

      Very true and I am glad they finally added it in for businesses. For home users / small businesses I can’t think of a use case where you have 1) multiple volumes and 2) need ssd caching on those multiple volumes.
      That being said 100% a good thing to add on

    You need to add another of your correction notes to the video. At around 02:24, you say "You'll see h.264 referred to as 'HEVC'...", which is incorrect (h.264 is AVC) Then at 02:34, you state "h.265 and 'HEVC' are the exact same thing", which is correct. Someone who doesn't know which is which might be confused.

    Hi SpaceRex, and Hi to everybody following this magnificent channel.
    After this video, I was very scared to upgrade my DS218+ from my actual DSM 7.0.1 (Update 4) to 7.1 (Update 2) that the NAS is suggesting me.
    Is the situation with 7.1 better now than in April? Can I upgrade and feel pretty much safe? I also have a Ram upgrade with non Synology Ram.

    Is surveillance station finally getting recording to external usb drives? That would be very cool if they did. I’m hesitant to run my nasa as an NVR due to the always on nature of camera drives. Would need to rebuild and out in a dedicated drive for the NVR and assign it a different pool. Total PITA

    Nextcloud vs. Synology Drive, which would you recommend?
    I want to backup(Android & PC), sync and go through all versions of changed files at any time.
    I do have snapshots enabled with version control and I also use SMB with openvpn when working remotely.
    But I have seen nextcloud recently and it seems awesome. And for Synology Drive I'm not completely sure why I would need that when I got hyper backup setup.
    What do you think the best approach would be for what I want?

    • @SpaceRexWill
      @SpaceRexWill  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So I have not used nextcloud or drive on android, but I have looked pretty heavily at using them for syncing on Mac and windows and in my opinion, if you are just looking to sync files Synology drive is better. It seems to be faster, have better clients for Mac and windows and also has great integration within DSM.
      Now that being said if you are looking for the Mail and calendar integration with nextcloud as well that could be a real reason to switch over.

    • @theviper90x13
      @theviper90x13 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SpaceRexWill Gotcha.
      So for contacts and Calender I have Synology Contacts & Calender setup and that syncs to my Phone through the android app Davx5.
      So far from what you know, do you think that nextcloud is better in syncing contacts and calenders or is everything being featured by Synology better?
      I have seen on some popular linux distros that they implemented Nextcloud into the OS itself...
      I don't think I need the mail features, but I haven't really researched nextcloud fully. Also I have seen some video calling and text messaging features on there that might be useful for the healthcare company that I'm IT supervisor of.

      @@SpaceRexWill Thx for willing to help me guys. So I'm a basic and noob user, I have a DS220j with 2x2TB segate ironwolf dirves in it. Yes SMB is on. The hardware is not the problem since at home I reach 35MB/s and I'm happy with that. But I'm a student and during the week I'm in another city, I use Synology Disk Client on my laptop to sync all my files. All encryption features are off but I get max speeds of 1MB/s (avg is more like 700KB/s) when in remote. I already tried to access the nas via the quickconnect feature but speeds are still under 1MB/s.

      @@wojtek-33 that is just a limitation of my wifi. I have a 300mb/s. Over 1GB/s Ethernet it goes up to 90MB/s+ with large files. The only issue for me is that I sometimes have to transfer 40-50gb of raw pictures while in remote (I do astrophotography as a hobby), so you see that at 0.7MBps it takes a lifetime. 35MBps would be already awesome.

    I am disappointed also. I have experienced numerous BUGs in DSM 7.1 and none have been fix by updates.
    1. The disappearing DSM FILE TRANSFER MONITOR - During a CIFS/NFS file transfer refresh the DSM browser page and the FILE TRANSFER MONITOR becomes inaccessible - impossible to stop a transfer (short of restarting NAS)! If anyone has a solution - please advise.
    2. DSM TASKBAR Icons suddenly disappear and the Right click menu PIN TO TASKBAR item is no longer on the menu. Several days later my TASKBAR icons reappeared and the PIN TO TASKBAR menu item was back.
    3. One day I attempted to create an EMPTY RECYLE BIN schedule and every time I hit APPLY I was logged out of DSM and the schedule was not created. The next day I attempted the creation and it worked.
    DSM7.1 is full of BUGS, BUGS, BUGS.

      So there are 3 apps that more or less do the same thing: Snapshot replication, Hyperbackup, and Active backup for business. For an offsite backup I would recommend hyperbackup to the external NAS. It’s going to be the most bullet proof and the most flexible. If you have an active and a backup unit in an office that you would need to fail over to I would go with replication.
      Then active backup (for synology) would be used in a large company where you need to be able to restore the NAS exactly how it was at the time of backup including all settings, and users, but it will not be as flexible or as resilient most likely

      @@SpaceRexWill thank you for reply me.
      What I’m trying to archive is have an offsite Nas to just to be a copy of the Nas on my company. A offsite fail over.
      I have 2 Unifi DMP on both sites. Do you recommend I setup a site to site VPN and use snapshot replication or the other methods?
      I used to have a usb backup with hyper backup and found it was really slow. You said replication is recommend if is onsite. The active backup is a bare metal right? Can I still use this second nas, or is just a copy of the main?
      Love you Chanel. Thank you.

    I fear the update that blocks the configuration of anything that isn't a Synology enterprise drive, massively jacking up the barrier for entry. The path they're going down is so worrisome. They're gearing up to be the Apple of the NAS sector. They're so aggressive about their disgustingly overpriced HDDs that this could be a year out or less.

    If you are disappointed now.... Wait until you see the new 22' hardware releases - Ryzen CPU and No 2.5Gbe. Why Synology? :(

    • @SpaceRexWill
      @SpaceRexWill  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just saw that. At least there is the option for 10 GbE but not looking good for a 2.5 gbe 922. As for the AMD vs Intel I am a huge fan of the AMD CPU’s as they run circles around the Intel ones in EVERYTHING except Plex transcoding.
      I wish Synology would go through and build a play+ line for NAS’s with Intel quick sync for users who need Plex, but for everyone else AMD is better

      @@SpaceRexWill The Ryzen R1600 goes for $90 / 1,000 units, 15w TDP. A comparable Intel would be the Intel Celeron J6413 is listed as $54, 10w TDP... both have 4,000+ CPU Mark. Ryzen does not run circles around Intel, it really depends on what processors you are comparing. An old '20 synology with a J4xx vs a newer '21 synology with the Ryzen V1500, yes the Ryzen is newer and faster. The point here is Synology is undergoing a '22 revision where they are bringing on a new processor, and they chose to forego a similar speed Intel CPU with quicksync and 2.5Gbe. It doesn't make sense to me.

    I just want my stuff to work. I tried to buy synology at work too but.. it's just not available. Qnap is there and shipping, synology is not. I used to want synology because I was just more familiar whith it but.. if just can't get 10 gig networking from synology then I guess I won't be buying it.

      Warning with QNAP is they have horrible security. I would only use the QNAP os if its 100% behind a firewall. You can also often install trueNAS on one

      @@SpaceRexWill Our stuff is 100% internal networks only, never gets exposed to the internets or the outside. We are just put off by the one experience with one device where it wiped our entire data on the whole device without being explicit it is going to do so. As a consequence we are not used to their stuff so it's just a bit of an unknown and as such not the first choice.
