Now that Active Backup for Business backups NAS to NAS. What’s the difference to use snapshot replication? I would like to backup one Nas to an offsite Nas via VPN. Should I use snapshot replication or ABFB? Thank you!
So there are 3 apps that more or less do the same thing: Snapshot replication, Hyperbackup, and Active backup for business. For an offsite backup I would recommend hyperbackup to the external NAS. It’s going to be the most bullet proof and the most flexible. If you have an active and a backup unit in an office that you would need to fail over to I would go with replication. Then active backup (for synology) would be used in a large company where you need to be able to restore the NAS exactly how it was at the time of backup including all settings, and users, but it will not be as flexible or as resilient most likely

So should I not update? Just stay at 6.2 then?
I would update, its a completely stable version. Just 7.1 did not end up with as many features as I would have hoped. Still a great update
What camera and lens you have got? It let you down this time.
BMP6K. Overall pretty disappointed by it, the user interface is horrible and autofocus is unusable. Got a really good deal on it via eBay though. Looking at the R5C
@@SpaceRexWill oh god. I would expect studio quality from bmp6k. I bought a cheap Fujifilm X-T30 and a viltrox F1.4 lens. God, those simulations (picture profiles) are an absolute gem. Videos from camera no need any colour correction at all. Can't be happier.
Hello, For a 4 bay, is Qnap or Asustor (gen 2) the way to go?
Hard to say, really depends on what you are looking to use it for. Asustor has a better price cheap option. Either one I would not open up to the internet and only use it locally as both have had pretty large security breaches recently where units who were following documented best practices from the companies got ransomwared
Exactly why i like Truenas :) Stable and just oh, STABLE! :) Good video Rex !!
Glad you liked the video!
I don't think I understand exactly why you started out the video disappointed. It all sounds like the right direction for an update.
I was really looking forward to having SMB multichannel in the update + MacOS ABB. So I am disappointed there was not more, but I am completely ok with Synology doing that
@@SpaceRexWill I see, that makes sense. Thanks for your reply.
I'll try this hope it fixes the odd issue in the VM transfering to the Nas pool 0 to 15mb transfer even with nvme SSD cache and 64gb of ram
is this when you are migrating data or what?
@@SpaceRexWill moving data from my VM to the pool could be how I'm doing it though as it's a windows VM on the Nas transfering to a mapped folder on same Nas
You should be able to saturate the full gigabit connection minimum. What CPU do you have?
@@SpaceRexWill it's the DS1621+ with the Ryzen V1500B
See this like you. But the Manager not understand this. Everywhere where you develop a Software the customers are the tester. And this is what comes with time and the users accept this and the Managers are like running behind like behind Gold. I say back to quality. And with the codec this cant be. Amazing.
Stability is the only reason for a NAS existence.
Agreed
Hey SpaceRex, whats crackalacking my brother
You can summarize this info into 2 minutes. So watery, omg.
@@SpaceRexWill thank you for reply me.
What I’m trying to archive is have an offsite Nas to just to be a copy of the Nas on my company. A offsite fail over.
I have 2 Unifi DMP on both sites. Do you recommend I setup a site to site VPN and use snapshot replication or the other methods?
I used to have a usb backup with hyper backup and found it was really slow. You said replication is recommend if is onsite. The active backup is a bare metal right? Can I still use this second nas, or is just a copy of the main?
Love you Chanel. Thank you.
I fear the update that blocks the configuration of anything that isn't a Synology enterprise drive, massively jacking up the barrier for entry. The path they're going down is so worrisome. They're gearing up to be the Apple of the NAS sector. They're so aggressive about their disgustingly overpriced HDDs that this could be a year out or less.
If you are disappointed now.... Wait until you see the new 22' hardware releases - Ryzen CPU and No 2.5Gbe. Why Synology? :(
Just saw that. At least there is the option for 10 GbE but not looking good for a 2.5 gbe 922. As for the AMD vs Intel I am a huge fan of the AMD CPU’s as they run circles around the Intel ones in EVERYTHING except Plex transcoding.
I wish Synology would go through and build a play+ line for NAS’s with Intel quick sync for users who need Plex, but for everyone else AMD is better
@@SpaceRexWill The Ryzen R1600 goes for $90 / 1,000 units, 15w TDP. A comparable Intel would be the Intel Celeron J6413 is listed as $54, 10w TDP... both have 4,000+ CPU Mark. Ryzen does not run circles around Intel, it really depends on what processors you are comparing. An old '20 synology with a J4xx vs a newer '21 synology with the Ryzen V1500, yes the Ryzen is newer and faster. The point here is Synology is undergoing a '22 revision where they are bringing on a new processor, and they chose to forego a similar speed Intel CPU with quicksync and 2.5Gbe. It doesn't make sense to me.
They dropped lot's of apps (like SVN)!
In 7.1 or 7.0? I was unaware of any dropped support in 7.1
@@SpaceRexWill I was moving from 6.2.4 to 7.0.1 and the install app listed SVN as a dropped app.
@@johnfabiani9630 Yes, it looks like they dropped it. But you can install svn server docker image and use it in docker!
@@Arcao There many apps dropped not just SVN. I'm sure your suggestion would work but I have to wonder about the performance? My home unit might not have the horse power to get the job done.
at 2:24 you say h264 is HEVC, but then you say h265 is HEVC.
Whoops! My bad
I just want my stuff to work. I tried to buy synology at work too but.. it's just not available. Qnap is there and shipping, synology is not. I used to want synology because I was just more familiar whith it but.. if just can't get 10 gig networking from synology then I guess I won't be buying it.
Warning with QNAP is they have horrible security. I would only use the QNAP os if its 100% behind a firewall. You can also often install trueNAS on one
@@SpaceRexWill Our stuff is 100% internal networks only, never gets exposed to the internets or the outside. We are just put off by the one experience with one device where it wiped our entire data on the whole device without being explicit it is going to do so. As a consequence we are not used to their stuff so it's just a bit of an unknown and as such not the first choice.
windows 11 we are looking at you
Thanks!
Thanks so much!
DSM 7.1 Hyperbackup to USB Hyper Backup unbearably slow
Slower then before? I have not run into that
so... better to not upgrade
It’s completely stable from my testing so I would not worry about upgrading. Just no new huge features for home users
when I started studying Biochemistry in 1973 - there was ONLY
Wordsky 1.0
paper and pen
ultra stable
still have it today
modern technology is
EXPENSIVE
Time consuming
unreliable
I could have accomplished
100 times more
without modern tech
and be 100 times more healthy
First Comment! Support From DR Bro
Thanks!
Will you do a upgrade vid on 6.2 to 7.1
