Nicely done review. I love the movie. What a lot of reviews seem to miss is how Fai was nearly blind to the attention respect and affection that Chang showed him, until perhaps the very end, going all the way to Taiwan in hopes of crossing paths.

I love this movie, too. The late '80s and the '90s were a real Golden Age for Hong Kong moviemaking and they were all given big releases in American theaters: sadly, no more. I'm glad you mentioned Chang Chen's performance because, although it is small, I always find it very touching and very memorable. I think of this movie as the point Tony Leung eclipses Leslie Cheung as the king of Hong Kong cinema. I love them both. My favorite Wong Kar Wai movie is one you didn't mention: Days of Being Wild ... Carina Lau is so great in that. I also like 2046 ... did WKW ever make a bad movie? (answer: yes, My Blueberry Nights - yuk!)

All of WKW's movies are great in my opinion, even Blueberry Nights haha. The 80s & 90s were a golden age for Chinese language filmmaking in general, both the mainland and Taiwan had some great films and directors rise up.
