As a 17 year old in the early 1980’s I worked at a country club in South Carolina. I worked one evening they performed at a wedding reception. Every guy on the stage in this video was with them then. I wasn’t even much of a beach music fan but these guys played a little bit of everything. And they did it excellently..
The Windjammer was a quaint cozy little cocktail room situated in the rear of the Bucaneer Night Club in Greenville NC in the early to mid 70s. Another small space in the front of the same building housed Four Par Productions which was the management and booking agency for many Eastern NC Beach Bands. Included among the Acts they booked was Nantucket Sleigh Ride (later known as Nantucket}, 10th Avenue, Band Of Oz, Onyx and others.
Great memories of that era! Another interesting and surprising fact (at least to me) was that the Windjammer was a 'topless' nightclub. Yes, the waitresses and hostesses were topless. (1973-1975). I played 6 nights a week at the Bucaneer in the house band, (Onyx) and the bands temporary 'break room' was a small room down the hall between the Buc and the Windjammer. I remembered be shocked when I first saw the waitresses hanging out (no pun intended) in the hall way.... The 'break room' was later moved to the Four Par Productions office in the front left side of the building (this, after they remodeled and moved the stage from the front of the building, to the left side). The building (originally a grocery store) is long gone, but the step-up to the door that led to the Four-Par agency is still there. Four Par agency would often book our band (Onyx) out to Charlie Good Nights in Raleigh ( it was a music venue back then; not a comedy club as it is now), the Castaways Clubs in Greensboro and Charlotte, and a different club in Statesville, and other places. This was one of the best era's for live music!
Big John Thompson nailing the lead vox on "Ocean Blvd." The song aptly describes a young-person's cruisin' endeavors on the boulevard in Myrtle Beach, SC!
Big John is my grandfather such an honor ☺
