WHAT'S HAPPENED HERE? VAN LIFE IN GERMANY: BEAUTY vs DEVASTATION

- Vanlife in Germany has shown us so much already, and this week, as we travel in our campervan through the country, we discover an unbelievably beautiful town straight out of a fairytale, before heading into the Harz mountains National Park, where we find a region that has been devastated by something causing widespread death of the trees here.

We have also since learned that the death of the trees has been exacerbated by potential climate change: drier summers and stronger storms mean the trees are more likely to fall, and as such it's created the perfect conditions for the bark beetle to thrive.
We also do a bit of campervan cooking using a cheap and cheerful recipe involving a can of mushroom soup, because we have to eat or we'll perish, and with our limited cooking set up, any new ideas are welcomed with open mouths. And we also eventually find ourselves on a wonderful free aire at the base of the Harz mountains, all the while dealing with the rain that seems to be constant at the moment across Europe. Vanlife: it's certainly never boring!

Morning all! We had a few issues with this video, camera jumping problems, audio crackling in places, then my laptop barely being able to cope with the process of making it (that one's been on the cards for a while), and I think producing it in the wrong frame rate too (no I don't know much about what that means either, but I think that's what happened 😂🤷♂️). Anyway, do let us know if you notice any of that and where, and apologies if it's distracting. If not, great, but either way we hope you still enjoy the video regardless. Loved the hike. That’s our kind of place. Also thought the price of beer was pretty good as it looked like a litre. Haven’t been to Germany for many years so must go back. I’d forgotten how nice it is. 🤗🚌❤️
I think you'd both love it here, there's lots of open space to explore and it's easier in a motorhome compared to the UK. The beer wasn't a litre but even so, still a bit cheaper than the UK overall. In the supermarkets the gap is even wider, I guess because we tax ours to buggery. Safe travels both ❤️

Another great Sunday video, a nice long one too. We had the same issue with pasta water, now we buy fresh pasta and just stir it into the food. Works really well, a little more expensive but definately worth it. x

I couldn't do without a shower every day. The van must stink to high heaven. Two sets of middle aged Betty Swollocks in a tiny van must be quite potent. LOL
It's not as bad as it sounds 🤪 The van rarely smells of us and there are other ways to manage it without showering every day. If I smelled after only a day or two of not showering I'd be worried!

Another very interesting video, thank you. I went to the Harz mountains many decades ago and there were lots of witch souvenirs in the tourist shops as it is famous for them - especially on one particular night on the Brocken mountain. On the night of 30. April, they fly to the top of the mountain to meet the devil. Just one interesting “fact”. How dreadful and sad to see all the dead trees. Stay safe and well.
Hi Irene, oh yes the witches! I can't believe we forgot to include all of that 🙈 We kept seeing magic type shops and couldn't understand why until we looked it up. Really interesting fact and it would be great to visit there on Walpurgus Night to see what goes on. Hope you enjoyed your stay when you visited, I imagine a lot of it looks the same, except the tree situation of course 😬 But hopefully nature will come through that in its own way with new forests replacing them 🙏

The one we use is philadelphia cheese or usually the cheaper store's own brand. Cook up some ingredients, add some herbs and spices then throw in the cream cheese, however this is not a revelation as we're sure there are also recipes on the back of packaging like with the soup.
That hike looked lovely however your German sounds about as bad as our Portuguese, although seeing as neither of us speak German you may well be speaking perfect German in which case... Lovely hike 😂... As for the beetles, it is crazy how such small insects can have such a huge effect on the environment.

Philadelphia cheese pasta or an equivalent might not be a revelation, but we'd forgotten all about it really so thank you for reminding us of its glorious tasty delights! 😍
Haha our German is worse than someone from the Outer Hebrides suddenly being expected to recite Japanese off by heart with no prior knowledge, but we press on regardless 😬🤦♂️
The hike was wonderful - really not too strenuous at all, and we can very much recommend the Harz region which includes Wernigerode. We didn't get chance to show that free aire at the end but it was fabulous - no phone signal but you could use free WiFi and the little community pool and bar/cafe were wonderful, and lots of trails leading into the hills from there.
The bark beetle effect was quite horrific to see - the video did not do it justice, but sometimes you'd look across a valley and witness a sea of dead, upright trees, like a dreadful energy had blasted through the area 😬 Seems to be affecting the UK too now, but not all trees so hopefully new types can replace them. Still, a beautiful area regardless

@@comealongdear Finally got home to watch it, I hope your eye heals soon, I am off to the Eye & Ear hospital tomorrow for a final checkup after one of mine became badly infected, (contact lens problem) take care of them eyes. I wouldnt worry too much about dumping that pasta water, it is pastaeurised after all 🤪. I hope Daisy is sorted. 👍
Oh yikes, I hope yours heals too! I do wear glasses (not that you see them in the videos very often!) and have contemplated contacts, but something about an object sitting in your eye all day makes me nervous.
I think it was a sty - but it's left a lump that won't go away yet. Apparently that's normal, but I'll keep an eye (🤪) on it. Best of luck with yours.

Oh no, we drove past there on the way to Sweden! I'm sorry to hear that - hopefully everything is okay. Were you close to him? Is it unusual to go a long time without speaking for the both of you? I'm sure there must be some way for you to find out if you know his address. I don't think we're going anywhere in that direction on the way back sadly. Do you have other family who might know? Failing that, I don't think it's unreasonable to call German authorities or the police if you're really concerned and the loss of contact is unusual. I hope you can make contact with him soon 😟❤️
@@comealongdear Thank you for your concerns. It's a long and complicated story. We weren't close, we spent the first 30+ years of our lives living in different countries. Briefly, we didn't meet each other until we were in our thirties. For a few years we got to know each other. Me going there, him coming here. Then he broke off communications. His choice.
Gosh that's quite the story there! Obviously how great that you made contact after all those years, but sad that it's petered out. Sometimes it goes that way; often people feel they've found or "fulfilled" the original purpose so it naturally stops. Unsure if that's what happened here, it seems odd he wouldn't let you know how he is at the very least so it could be anything 🤔 I hope you get a resolution soon, it certainly sounds worth pursuing. I used condensed soup with a chicken ala king...🤣🤣. It's very versatile.

A gallon of boiling water in the confined space of a MH is not a great idea..So you are right and there is the danger of damaging the plumbing.
Absolutely, although if we do drain cooking water down the sink (not pasta water) we always let it cool first. Another fun fact: might just be our van, but when we drive you can smell the contents of the waste water tank for some reason, which is not much fun I assure you 😂😬
you need the pasta water ...that is neded to thicken your saus if it is still to wet...it is called amido in Italian and I have been doing mushroom soep pasta sauce once a week for years....the trick is use normal soep not condensed condensed makes it too thick...with normal soep if it still is to watery you add amido aka pasta water and that thickens it.....
that said you did kinda buchered a perfectly good recepie..I always add garlick and fresh chilli pepers a bit...
Thank you Robert, we always appreciate your in depth food critiques 😂😙 You are right about the pasta water and will admit I didn't know that. Useful for future meals. There was onion, garlic and green peppers added to it as well. It tasted good and we didn't die, so it's a mild success for us 😉

Maybe your eye area was bitten or you have had an allergic reaction. Be careful about touching plants etc in your walks. Hope it goes soon.
Thank you 🥰 That could be what happened. We realised we didn't say if it got any better though! I put a hot teabag on the eye that night, and it did seem to bring the sty out, so I thought that would be the end. But I still have a lump left that hasn't shifted (I think they're called chalazions). Apparently that's normal, and I've been gently applying warm teabags again to help reduce it. I THINK its going down but apparently they can stay for a long time! Time will tell I guess. Thank you for your advice 🥰
