Character, artistic vocal restraint and and incredible sense of melody. That's how I'd describe this song and Julian's performance. There's so much vibe throughout the whole piece, and because he's not soaring the whole time, you're just waiting for that sweet, freeing higher voice to come out and make your day.
It's the perfect album opener and gives us fellow singers a lot to aspire to... And the good news is, with the right kind of studying and practicing (and mindset) we can do it too!
Other videos I've done on Julian:
    • Selfless - The Strokes...
    • Reptilia - The Strokes...

At The Door. That's where it's at. There are no drums and I think it's Julians most beautiful performance, at least with the strokes

I would love to see you do Under Cover of Darkness. The perfect middle transition part between Reptilia and Selfless. Otherwise if you picked an Is This It song you should do Barely Legal!

Great suggestion! I love everything about this song, not just the vocals. Agree that’s the perfect encapsulation of where they came from and where they were heading at exactly midway through their career so far (2011 I believe)

It’s definitely intended though! He slides from 3rd fret all the way to 12 / 13 and plays the same patters an octave up. It’s the hardest part of the entire song because of how fast you need to get there (about 1/16 note amount of time)

    • @MM-vs2et
      @MM-vs2et ปีที่แล้ว +3

That's the Rick Rubin compression. The release is so low that the moment the guitarist stops playing for even a 10th of a second, it shoots up and amplifies the guitar noise. It's cool and adds character to the song.

Brodood, you are the absolute best. Your deep dive into perhaps the greatest sonic moment in Strokes history (“I don’t want aanyyyyonnnne”) is pure gold. Love the masterclass on that micromoment. That’s what makes you the king. You are not just covering the bases. You head into the weeds as needed. Thank for you that.

I think the feeling I get from the songs from this album is vulnerable. He's singing with parts of his voice that are probably not his most comfortable, but very very appropriate for the feeling of the song. This song in particular, being about the nuance and complexities of close relationships where you may value the relationship itself over the consist adherence to your choices and principles and accepting that you'll get another chance to do things "right" down the line. It just matches very well.

  • @simoneh4732

Never thought I'd be able to get this level of analysis from one of my favourite artist's songs. Many thanks Chris!!!
Regarding Julian's voice evolution: The first 2 records were made pretty much back to back and with the same producer, so they sound really similar and his style didn't really change. He was also still suffering from alcoholism. He quit booze before the third album, First Impressions of Earth, and that's where you see him start to experiment and evolve his vocals, but still no head voice. There's even a lyric "you taught me how to sing" where I wonder if he is actually referring to vocal coaching. In the 4th album Angles on the first track his head voice appears, pretty close to the way it is now, but it's buried in vocal layers. In Taken for a Fool the clean mixed voice is out in full force though. Then in the 5th album Comedown Machine, the head voice is the dominant vocal layer in the first track Tap Out, and the final track Call It Fate, Call It Karma, he finally lets his head voice ring out unaccompanied in what sounds like an amazing 50's Hawaiian ballad. He has further refined and experimented since then, but I think the bulk of the change happens between First Impressions, Angles, and Comedown Machine.

It really showcases almost every trick Julian has in his bag and is, in my opinion, the best vocal performance on the album along with selfless. Just started watching your videos a week or two ago and I am thoroughly enjoying how in depth you go while giving your vocal analysis as well as giving tips and tricks for how to get your voice to mimic the sounds of some of my favorite vocalist. Holy smokes, you are a godsend for this video! I love all your videos on The Strokes and was waiting but didn't expect one so soon! Another great song you analyzed! I had a hard time singing along with this (even now, and it's been almost 2 years since release already) because of the head resonance! Like everytime I tried I think I kept doing a "falsetto" and as you said has a more "breathy" sound and I never was happy with it and almost would never sing along with that part. Now I'm gonna carefully practice that by pulling it back of my throat!
While it may seem much to ask, I would love more of The Strokes (at your pace of course), but I would like to hear your thoughts on Comedown Machine since that has Julian use his head resonance a lot, but is just more mixed. To be specific on what songs to possibly inspect in his vocals would be One Way Trigger or Call It Fate Call It Karma (I like all the songs but I think you can find a lot to pick in these especially). But I highly recommend for you to check out The Voidz where Julian goes pretty crazy awesome on his vocals and overall music compositions.

Julian's vocal work on The New Abnormal is so stunning and underrated. I think the album gets overlooked because half of it is slower, longer jams...not exactly the classic strokes sound, but Julian brings it and it's such a cool album, a different side of his personality.

Ize of the World might be a really good one, during that era was a very transitionary time, his vocals are gross and ugly and loud, he gets so yell-y in that song but they suit the songs on the album First Impressions of Earth really well
