- A playthrough of Hudson Soft's 1997 puzzle-action game, Super Bomberman 5.
Played through the "normal" story mode and finished with the good ending.
This Japanese-only final installment to the long running Super Bomberman series ends the line of SNES titles on an interesting, somewhat unexpected note. While all of the graphic and sound assets are redone for this edition, all of the stages here are based on ones from prior SBM games, and seem to be styled in many ways after Bomberman '94, as well as SBM3 and 4 that both "borrowed" a fair amount from Bomberman 94. The updated art style and the excellent music (original and remixes) certainly help the levels to feel like more than mere generic copies, the game does lack a distinct feeling of "freshness" if you have played all the others.
There are quite a few new things here though, the most notable being the branching paths that let you decide which levels (and ultimately which boss) you'll hit in each world. At the end of each stage, you'll get your choice as to which portal you want to enter - some paths are longer and much harder than others, and they'll all end up at the end of the game, but in order to unlock the golden Bomberman for battle mode, you have to hit them all. This is the meaning of the final screen of the video: during this playthrough I went through 25% of the stages in the game. It pretty effectively gives the single-player game a bit more longevity.
I know that for many people this is the preferred SNES Bomberman title, but I can't really say I share that sentiment. It certainly is a good game, but it was feeling a bit stale for me at this point. Saturn Bomberman came out the same year, so given the choice between them, I'm not sure who would pick the SNES version unless it was out of familiarity and nostalgia. Still, it's Bomberman, and for most people, that'll be more than enough.

I can't help but feel that the Super Bomberman series was starting to become a bit long-in-the-tooth with its fifth and final installment, but for fans who just want more of what they know and love, it's difficult to find much fault in Super Bomberman 5.

4 did indeed feel rather stale and lacking but man did they go above and beyond with 5. So much replayability thanks to all the branching paths and multiple endings, all made possible with the much-needed addition of the battery save. There's so much content 100%ing this title takes more time than beating all of the previous games combined! It honestly felt more like a 5th generation game on 4th gen console. A true celebration of the series, Super Bomberman 5 couldn't be a more perfect sendoff to the SNES/FC era.

I didn't even think they would still be making Super Bomberman in 1997! As the final game in the series, I like how its levels are callbacks to the previous games.

They included some neat remixes for extra fanservice, so I think they really did care.
I KNEW IT! I always remembered playing this specific Bomberman game a lot back in 2006 to 2009 on emulator, I was way younger back then but I remember my dad had installed a SNES/SFC emulator with a bunch of games, and between those were all the Super Bomberman games, and I specially remembered this one, but I couldn't remember which one it was, and turns out I just didn't remember there were 5 games and not just 4, it's good to know it's real and not just some weird fabrication of my mind.
The code for this brand of Louie still exists in the game, even has its own cry (Accessable through the sound test) Other cut animations include a time over animation (Punches the ground in a rage), A minecart animation (Is afflicted by motion sickness), and unused graphics for its ability (A sliding shoulder tackle attack). Honestly there should be a rom patch that fixes his code and makes him available. Its possible! Spread the word!

I super love this Super Bomberman game of all. Love the Boss Theme, Zone 3 theme, even the Battle Theme
It's kind of crazy to stop to think that this game was released for the Super Nintendo in the same year as the Saturn Bomberman for the Sega Saturn and Bomberman 64 for the Nintendo 64, the Super Nintendo really was one of the consoles with the longest lifespan I've ever seen, the following year he still had Megaman and Bass as an exclusive.
Nowadays you don't see consoles lasting that long anymore, usually when a new generation of consoles comes along, the previous one dies in less than 2 years. (especially Nintendo consoles, since the GameCube era they pretty much kill their consoles as soon as they release a new one)
It's so bizarre seeing the first two-game's glossy and 3D-ish styles mixed in with the '93 and '94
What I love; That fat Louie, the bomb sfx and various paths.
What I hate; How hard the bosses are and the inability to quickly return to the world map from a once-beaten-before level.
It's so sad seeing the Super Nintendo die off it will always be remembered. Its last few games was the best.
It had a very long lifespan, much like the NES and Game Boy, something no other console, except maybe the Sega Genesis, could boast about, and something you will never see from consoles ever again (console gens only last about what, 5-6 years now?)
And the designers don't work in new games for SNES, only for NES and Génesis, sadly :(

Es curioso que digas eso, ya que Super Bomberman 5 nunca salió fuera de Japón. ¿Tenías un Famicom con este juego? ¿Usabas emuladores? ¿Cómo jugaste este juego?
Si se podía jugar este titulo en la snes americana con el cartucho famicom, recuerdo que mi papá habia comprado muchos cartuchos de famicom pero al ver que no le entraba por dos rejillas que habían dentro, lo abrió y con alicate los rompió, y cuando logró poner los de famicom si los corrió, no se si le habrá hecho mas cosas pero con lo que llegué a ver solo se que arrancó esas dos rendijas que estan por la lectora

Okay, so, just curious, but regarding the Good/Bad Endings, how in the heck do you even get them in the first place? Like, is it specifically determined by the placement of the portals, whether you enter any of the blueish ones or not, the bosses you fight, or is the outcome just completely random? I'm just wondering since this has been a question I had with this game for quite a while, and considering this is one of the only SB games I'm not very familiar with (mainly since it's entirely in Japanese and I never could understand it enough to go anywhere on the game as a kid), that certainly doesn't help my case :V

Besto juego de la infancia, yo solo pude jugar al 3, 4 y 5 pero aun asi me gustaron bastante, en mi tiempo de cole tenian ps2 o ps3, pero yo muy humilde con mi supernintendo, los bomberman y mi multitap, mas preferian jugar con mi consola xdd

Does the game cartridge uses batteries? Because when I reset my SNES (modded for SFC) it saves my progress.
But when I turn it off, it loses all the data.

Just got Super Bomberman 4, this one, and Saturn Bomberman in the mail today from Ebay. Only Bomberman II Famicom, and Bomberman 3 Gameboy left to go to feel fully satisfied with the series, unless I want Bomberman Party Edition on PS1, though that's basically a rehash of the first NES Bomberman, with added things in it (and has the NES Bomberman game in it), or Bomberboy, which has the first NES Bomberman again playable, but in black and white (it's a separate mode). Bomberman Fight on Saturn and PS1 would be a good possibility too, but that one has no real single player mode, like the normal games in the series do.

Bomberman has a Game that’s Released on the Super Nintendo in 1997 That’s Pretty Late in the Life of the Console
Seriously, Final Fantasy 7 came out around that time.
Final Fantasy 7 is only on PS1 and this Game came out when the N64 was Making Games that’s why I think it’s late in the console :)
I believe in at least one of the super Bombermans you could use the first few seconds to cause multiple explosions as you have invincibility.

+CarozQH That sounds right. Even in Japan this was pretty damn late for release for 16-bit. Atomic Bomberman and Saturn Bomberman also came out the same year, and Bomberman World on PS1 came out in 1/98. They were really pumping them out in the late 90s it seems :)
