    Also Dr Pulley has slides (vs rollers). Your thoughts on using slides Rollers and what combining the two in a variator basket would do. A vid would be awesome

      Howdy, it is when the engine reaches the 6000km mark you will notice signs of wear so at intervals of 3000kms is a good time to check. Rollers and sliders both slide, Dr P has a great system in their shape and they all designs wear and which ever design you choose maintenance is the key. Dont mix them, it is unnecessary. Thanks for the great explanation. I have a Honda SH300 and particularly on cold mornings the bike shudders badly when I pull away from a stop. If I gently feed in the throttle I can work around it and after everything is hot it’s usually ok. Is the problem likely to be the variator or the clutch grabbing or even the torque converter spring? The bike is from 2017 with only 9000 Km. Thanks a lot!

    • @scooterstreetau
      @scooterstreetau  ปีที่แล้ว

      Clutch shudder is caused by the clutch shoe contact pad skipping. The transmission should be serviced at regular intervals.

    • @scooterstreetau

      Thank you. For these small scooter variators there is no grease supplied/required. On the larger capacity scooter variators, you will notice the basket has rubber seals and these are the kits that require grease and the grease is applied to the shaft. The instructions will always guide you.

    Hello dear friend my scooter from start until around 45 or 50 km revs very high like a plane ,if i give more gas i can reach 100 with no problem although very loud on noise that comes from the transmition,the problem firstly started when i realised that going up on a hill i had to give full throttle to make it happen with low acceleration but i had no loud noise on transmition then,i replaced rollers and sliders on variator,clutch bell and cvt belt ,the clutch is almost new,the variator has around 35.000 kilometers

    • @scooterstreetau
      @scooterstreetau  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Without knowing what noise I guess you shoud check the diff gears and look for wear in the Transmission, You need to discover the exact location of cause.

  • @cox_stuff4530
    @cox_stuff4530 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    thanks for the video! I recently fell off the scooter, the reason I think why did it happen is because of rear wheel jammed and I sat on front brakes. Belt was torn apart literally in dust and part of it was in rear variator (i think its called a clutch, we call it rear variator here, sorry for confusion). Could it be a reason for jammed wheel?

    • @scooterstreetau
      @scooterstreetau  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Wow, I hope you were not injured..
      Usually when the belt explodes it would not STOP the rear wheel, because the clutch is driven by the clutch shoe activating the clutch bell and then engaging the diff gear. If this has happened do a thorough investigation in to any failed parts especially the clutch shoe, which is the driving point..⚠⚠

    If my scooter have 13g stock roller, can I change to 14g? What is the effect of it? Does my fuel consumption increase?

    • @scooterstreetau
      @scooterstreetau  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rollers: In a perfect world, the effect will be a slightly slower acceleration. If the 13g rollers are possibly already the optimal weight for the variator, if by chance they were too light you would be missing out on some top speed. If it was me I would test and trial several different weight sets to find the best set for what you want from the machine.
      Fuel: If the riding situation des not change, the consumption will have no noticeable difference.

    Hi, I have a problem with my 50cc 2 stroke scooter, where it takes off great until about 40-45 km/h when it starts to rev really high. Could it be that my drive belt is worn, or the rollers are too light? Also I noticed that the belt doesn't go all the way up on the variator pulley. • @scooterstreetau

      Usually only at transmission service intervals, they will get a little dusty from roller, guide and belt debris caused by wearing. Best just top wipe the out, or clean with brake cleaner. Definitely no grease whatsoever in the Variator, unless you have a MHR Team performance Variator which requires it (these variators have rubber seals at both ends of the bush shaft in the basket to keep the grease captured).

      Sounds like a classic torque driver failure, or torque spring failure. The Minarelli engine is particularly bad for it, but it can happen to other models too. I would recommend removing your rear pulley and inspecting the spring, as well as removing the sleeve to inspect the pins and slots of the torque driver too.

    Hello, I have a 2008 Kymco Vitality 50cc 2 stroke. Everything is stock. The stock roller weight is 9 grams. I have an equal mix now of 9gram and 5.5 gram rollers, spaced out equally. I also swapped the stock belt for a malossi Kevlar belt. The scooter can get to 70kms/hr on flat and downhill but stays between 48 and 55 Kms/hr up hills.
    My issue is if i give the scooter too much throttle from takeoff it bogs. Is this a roller weight issue? I tried 4.7 grams and it seemed to take off better but the rpm’s sounded too high and the top end suffered immensely . I also bought a mix of malossi clutch springs, red, green and blue (I haven’t put them in yet) . I will also be upgrading the muffler soon to a malossi performance exhaust. I’m just confused to why it bogs if i give too much throttle from the start…. I checked my spark plug after riding for a while and it was a chocolate brown so I don’t think it’s running too rich or too lean. I appreciate any advice. It’s a pretty heavy scooter so I’m thinking lighter rollers may not work too well in it.

      Go back to the start prior to any mods when there were no issues, now fit 1 part at a time, test the change before moving to the next part change so you can isolate the issue.

      The Storm is a cool scooter to tune, rebranded Piaggio Typhoon but with better wheel/tyre combo. What you have described is the perfect description of a bike with an air leak. You need to check your airbox tube (which leads from the airbox to the carb), your intake manifold (from the carb to the engine) as the Piaggio engine in that bike very commonly develops cracks in these rubber parts with age, leading to exactly the problems you've described. If these are both intact, check your reed petals, if intact you may have a crank seal leak.

      Have you checked for limiters? Check the CDI and the intake - reed valve.

      Is the belt progressing to the outer limit of the variator? Do a Pen test,.
      The rollers could moved up to 6 gram or even heavier.

      Yes, this is pretty common on that engine. The torque driver (rear pulley system) on both the 50cc and 100cc Minarelli engine use a 2 pin system, which is highly prone to wearing prematurely. This causes the rear pulley to suddenly drop open (which rapidly increases the gear and drops the revs) rather than smoothly transitioning into a higher gear as it should. You need to replace the outer face of the rear pulley (torque driver) with the Malossi unit. Its a pretty easy job to do, we have another video on this exact issue and how to repair.

      Yes, we always place the roller with the closed end or capped end of the roller toward the clockwise direction of the variator. Due to the variator spinning anti clockwise using this method keeps roller inner and outer together. Good quality rollers are glued and it will not be super important but a good practise to apply when setting up the variator.

      The factory weights will probably produce the best top speed. If you go heavier ( which I would advise you try) you may notice a drop in the acceleration from start. hey what are the benefits of a better variator

    • @scooterstreetau
      @scooterstreetau  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A performance Variator generally gives exactly that, better performance. In some models of scooter the Variator can increase the acceleration, increase the delivery of power evenly through the rev rage and in some cases they will increase top speed. Certain Race (Over Range) Variators have larger dimensions then that of the original and add an increase at both ends of the speed line.

      Never.. The smaller variator should run as a dry unit. Graphite powder has been used in the past but I prefer a clean transmission free from substances. The larger CC variators are an enclosed unit when assembled and they do have a very light grease that remains inside the unit and will not leak to the belt.

    Hey man - well produced video, but you didn't actually tell us how to service the variator! You only explained how it works and which parts should be replaced (by your workshop).
    What about directional orientation of the fitting of certain roller weights? What about any cleaning or lubrication (if any) required?
    The part you refer to as the bush, is technically in engineering terms and OEM parts manuals referred to as a boss or collar; the "bush" is in fact the phosphor bronze bearing surface, press-fitted into the hub of the drive pulley / variator sliding half, or "inner brass thrust component" as you called it.
    You can release a part 2, educating your viewers more correctly.
    Twist and go 🙂

      Thank you TVW. We love to get the comments and will always reply, very glad you like the production of the Vid, looks like we need to work on the content for you.
      You may have missed some info, so I'll help out, watch from 1:20 and at 3:00 the components replaced when servicing the variator. In understanding the function of a part you can then better understand how to look after and keep the best function. The direction of rollers placement for each manufacturer is different, If you have a Malossi Variator just follow the instructions in the manual. Overall we have the closed end of the roller if produced in that manner facing opposite the direction of travel.
      Cleaning is a great idea, always remove the dust and particles that could wear or inhibit the correct function.
      Many of the workshop manuals have different names for the same part, such as HUB, DRIVE BOSS, COLLAR, BUSH and SPACER. We don't mind what you prefer to call it, we understand what you mean👍You refer to a couple of names for the DRVE PULLEY, VARIATOR SLIDING HALF, DRIVE FACE, VARIATOR BASKET, MOVABLE DRIVE FACE COMP.
      If you need some help with something in particular just send us an email, will be more than happy to help with your variator😊😊
