I had spent several hours trying to connect my very old Celestron 114 GT to a current software. Your video enabled me to do that. Cheers to you. And many thanks.

One of the best videos I've seen on TH-cam, very well explained to the last detail. Nearly all don't do this, but I'm happy that I've now got my mount working on all platforms. A very big thank you Andy.. you're a star! (excuse the pun! Lol)

Thanks, I prefer eqmod connection because it is more reliable and then I don't need to use the hand controller.

    Sorry for my bad english.
    Nice video!
The thing that hurts my dreams is: can I connect an eq5 motorized mount ( without a goto synscan sistem)?
    Thanks for your time

Thanks so much for watching. Yes, to the best of my knowledge, you will require a goto enabled mount to do this.

Andy. Do I still have to polar align and triangulate as I do with the hand controller every time I set up? If so can I do this through Stellarium? Cheers Stan

Accurate polar alignment is always required for accurate tracking. The software and the telescope have to synchronise, therefore some form of identification that the scope is on target is required. I realise this is a step I've not included. To correct the positioning many people use platesolving to centre the target and synchronise the software to the mount. I think I'll do a follow up video to cover this, thanks for asking the question!

Question - If slewing gets you near but not on your object, what are the steps to tell the mount where the object really is, so you can accurately slew to other objects? I use the controls to get to the object. What is the step to tell the mount that it is NOW pointing at the object?

    • @AndyofAstro
      @AndyofAstro  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hello, I believe there is a sync to telescope function. If you slew to a target in stellarium, then adjust to centre the target with the hand controller, I think (although I've not tried it) there is a sync to telescope function. The software and the telescope should then be in sync with each other. The other method is to use platesloving to correct to target, and then again sync to telescope. Afraid I've not used this function myself, however it sounds like a good opportunity to do a short video on this. Thanks for asking a great question.

very good, a lot of useful info there, i will need it soon, trying to get started in astronomy but im all confused ATM.. i have .. an EQ5 from skywatcher and an explorer 130, and a 200p, i JUST bought the synscan EQ5pro and fitted it.. it seems to be working.. had to stop the scope smashing into the mount and tripod tho .. ( il be honest, im not even sure how to polar align the scope yet { god i wish you were my neighbour ) lol
im hoping to control my eq5 remotely with the synscan wifi adapter thats coming tomorrow, i bought the eq5 and p200 last year but gave up because A, i had no clue what i was doing and B, clouds came..and stayed
everything except the synscan EQ5 kit is 2nd hand..
i really want to do AP.. and remotely if poss because i dont really want to be standing out in the cold for hours if i dont have to.
im going to use my 130p as was told the 200p is too big and heavy for AP on the EQ5 mount really.
dont even know what camera il use yet, i have a canon dslr, a m43 and a little svbony cheapo ccd..
i know i spewed a lout out there .. no one to talk to about astronomy.. i want to get into it but its proving difficult ..any thoughts on my situation ? cheers

Hi Rob, Thank you for getting in contact. It is a tricky hobby, however very rewarding, but also frustrating to get going and the learning curve can be very steep - I find it difficult and continue to find it difficult. The eq5pro is a good mount and I use my really old, second hand one regularly. I started with a Bresser Galaxia 900/114. I would first check with an astro shop to see if your telescopes can reach prime focus with a DSLR. Many telescopes are designed for visual work only - they cannot focus the light onto the DSLR camera sensor. I strongly advise emailing a good astro shop to ask if your scopes can do this or not. My bresser galaxia CANNOT focus with an DSLR, but can focus with a mini astro cam! I know the the Skywatcher PDS series is designed specifically for prime focus photography - my 130PDS is specifically designed for this purpose. The next thing to set tiny goals and steps for yourself. For example - tonight I am going to learn how to polar align the mount - and just work at that. And then add to it, polar align the mount, and three star alignment. And so on. It is really easy to do to much at once. Then I would explore with a bit of visual astronomy to help get familiar with the sky. For example, the Jupiter and Saturn are mainly visible from September - December in the south. Orion is mainly visible in the winter from November - March. Galaxies around March etc etc. You can then plan your targets. Also look at getting free stuff - Software like Stellarium, Autostakkert, PIPP, Registax, GIMP - all free software - learn what each can do and how to use them. I would also get good at imaging the Moon. It is really good fun and your SV bony astro cam can be used for this - with Autostakkert and Registax you can produce fantastic results. Follow some really good TH-camrs - I am but a beginner - however Astrostacy, Astrobackyard, Astrofarsography, Dylan o Donal - Star Stuff, Cuiv the lazy Geek, AstroExpolring, Astro La Vista, Helena's Astrophotography, VisibleDark, Chucks Astrophotography, Galactic Hunter, Astro Addict, Astrobiscuit, Nebula Photos to name a few - and more are FANTASTIC and load of information to learn from these experts. Hope this helps.

@@AndyofAstro thanks m8, yes, im struggling..almost to the point of selling it all..il be honest..but anyway..as for the AP side, im not really pursuing this yet as I know its a ways off..last year I took some moon shots and stacked them, sorted out my DSLR flange distance, so I'm OK there, ..TBH I am trying to do one thing at a time but im buggered if I can figure out this polar scope alignment business 🙄..I got the EQ5 motorised kit in the hopes it would make it easier..it doesn't ☹..if anything its harder now. Feeling very despondent ATM so probably shouldn't be writing this reply..anyway, got a small alt az mount with that 2nd hand skywatcher wifi adapter..that seems easier..but doubt would be much good for AP ...
I haven't been outside with the newly motorised EQ5..just trying to "fake" it indoors till I suss out what its doing..
Anyway thanks for the encouragement, il keep you posted Cheers Rob 👌

Hey don't give up, it's a long road and this hobbies is a marathon not a sprint. The Skywatcher Synscan app is also very useful and might help a lot with polar alignment. Also Sharpcap is quite cheap and has a polar alignment routine which is very accurate. Best of luck!
