Always Cloudy - A Christmas Astro Song
My mount won't guide
My stars all looking crap
Camera disconnected
And it won't come back
Platesolves are failing
And its starting to rain
Looks like is going to be cloudy again
Collimations off
I've got reflections galore
Stars aren't round
Rubbish guiding once more
Counter weights aren't enough
To balance my mount
What on Earth is third axis about
My filters don't work
The dews building up
Light pollution everywhere
Its time to give up
Pixinsight forgets my settings
My PC won't load
And it keeps on crashing
Polar Alignment
Is just a joke
Gradient extraction
Is just depressing
My astrophotography is not progressing
Time to sell up
And take up knitting
Buy a smart telescope
Andy stop complaining
I'm never going to use it
As its always raining
My mount won't guide
My stars all looking crap
Camera disconnected
And it won't come back
Platesolves are failing
And its starting to rain
Looks like is going to be cloudy again

Great, I was looking for that. I will update my Eq6R Pro and the hand controller too. Many thanks.
Wow, this was incredibly ambitious to run dual scopes on a livestream. I started an astro live stream the other week as well. I use an ASIAir for the main screen so we get a full screen view, and a fast scope for live stacking. But it's a complicated process. Dual scopes must be twice the complication. Kudos to you for figuring it out as it's not an easy thing to do. It's kind of like spinning a dozen plates all at once lol.
Merry Christmas Andy! Thanks for sharing your experience. You are attempting something much more complex than most astrophotographers do, and I think that's cool. Keep doing what turns you on.
Merry Christmas Andy, wishing you clear skies for 2025.
Thank Jim, have a great Christmas 🎄 and all the very best for 2025!
Merry Christmas Andy! Got a bit hit by reality watching your video sumarizing the dual-telescope setup, since I'm about to go that same route xD all the best wishes from germany
It is a worthy exercise, it is a lot of work though. Best wishes for Christmas 🎄 and all the best for 2025!
Why dont you try off-axis guiding? Looks like your setup for the guidescope is quite heavy, so it would save you some weight there and possibly improve your guiding a little bit. It really is an interesting project but it looks like you’re disappointed with the results and i thought it would be a shame if you gave up on it. I hope we see more of this!
I feel your pain - so few clear nights and then the Gremlins come in and ruin it. I generally go with the KISS principle :). Lovely video though
Invest in Astropixel processor to stack and when you use LNC the edges will be so much smoother But you will definitely with trial and error get some stunning results. Merry Christmas Andy
You got a thumbs up for me just for the song. Everything else was good too but the song really pushed it over the edge

Happy Christmas Andy. Very brave with the dual set up, I am sure extremely frustrating at times but stick at it and I am sure you will win and then it will feel like a huge triumph. Wishing you clear skies or snow and a happy New year
Hey Glen, hope you are well merry Christmas! The dual telescope is not going disappearing, it needs a bit more work. The lightweight mount needs replacing though. Have a good one and all the best for 2025!
Oh man I had that struggle too. Being the but of jokes after spending a very significant amount of money and my mount actually binding and not slewing properly. It was not enjoyable to receive so much angst. I too nearly gave up. Having taken months to fully strip and repair my mount it now works. There is a sense of accomplishment im sure and thanks for sharing it as part of your journey too. It’s not always just instagram but posts of perfect images. This channel is very real.
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas Andy hope you all have a great time. I agree that the EQ5 & EQ3 are pretty poor performers as compared with my other half's HEQ5 which is now ancient & still out performs a lot of mounts & it's not even belt modded. I used to own an NEQ6 which I sold when I bought an AZ EQ6 & out of the 2 the NEQ6 did guide better but the thing that let that down was the latitude bolts as after setting up & tearing down a lot the thread started to go very stiff over time whereas the AZ has a better system. You can buy HEQ5's at a pretty decent price second hand a guy we were speaking to bought his dirt cheap, admittedly it were a few years old but a well looked after one. I do still use my EQ5 with a lightweight setup & it's ok with that but I have to keep things at a minimum weight wise.
Hey Tich, how are you? Yes, I made the mistake a while ago of buying a secondhand eq5pro to repair and that was starting with the wrong mount. It has plagued me ever since. The AZEQ6 is good, west side guiding is poor, east to very good. The ioptron I had briefly was hopeless, usb disconnects, poor guiding, badly engineered mounting bolts - it felt so fragile. Much as it pains me to say this, I think there is no compromise with mounts, you simply have to spend the money. I've realised that if someone is selling theirs, there is probably a really good reason, it's probably not worth owning due to an issue. If something works well and doesn't cause issues, you tend to hold onto it. The other issue is I don't really like many of the mounts on the market, they all have pros and cons and I struggled to find one I like. Anyway rant over. Best wishes for Christmas and 2025!
Always good to have a rant & get things off your chest mate I've made some pretty bad choices over the years too so I know exactly how you feel. I'm fine by the way just still waiting for the operation which hopefully now will be on the 6th so fingers crossed for 3rd time lucky I guess.
Love the song. Wishing you clear skies, keep looking up.
Merry Christmas Andy, I enjoy your channel 🔥🏆🔥 You’re the best! 🤠
Oh Andy i nearly spit out my coffee😂
Cant you put a power box and a usb hub on top of the OTA and have all your cabling above the scopes with only power and main USB cable dropping from the set up rather than a nest of cables.
hey Andy! I see you have a considerable amount of gear but none working properly, focusing on a single rig and making it work flawlessly will bring you more satisfaction (guaranteed) . for example, that dual telescope setup is really cool but could easily be outperformed by a single 6" f4 or 8" f4 newt, cheaper, faster and WAY simpler, Merry Christmas!
A dual scope set up is a great way to go, I'd love SharpCap Pro to develop into this. Thanks for sharing.
The problem is in the UK winter, there are so few clear nights that you don't want to be chasing gremlins on the only clear night of the month. That said, it looks like a good candidate for a couple of raspberry pi s and EKOS.
Nice video Andy, the twin scope set-up is looking very different to sort out and get working but it's a fantastic project, maybe time for a break from the frustration of the twins and get the small refractor set up just to have some fun , thanks for taking the time to make these video looking to seeing what 2025 has in store for you, hope you and yours have a great Xmas
Nice rigg. Don't be so hard on your self. Everyone struggle in one way or another.
Merry Christmas🌲 and a happy new year to you and your family. 🔭
Merry Christmas Mr. Andy! I hope you can translate becose my english isn' quit good. Un abrazo desde México and God Bless you and your family!.
That was absolutely delightful!
You might want to consider using a telegizmo cover and leaving it setup for a long period. I leave my stuff outside pretty much the entire year. If I had to setup the gear each time, I think I would go nuts. In terms of cable management, that setup is about as hard as it gets! I have the iOptron CEM70, and one of its best features is through the mount cabling, and has power and USB on the saddle. Not cheap though.
Merry Christmas Andy 🎄
That was me 2 days ago :) everything that could go wrong did
Great video, and super image, I think you need a bit of a reset, don’t give up, we have all had these wobbles in the hobby. Take a break and have a think about it. Also on a side note, you don’t, or even shouldn’t use both Dark flats and bias for calibration, as they do the same thing with modern CMOS cameras, just use one or the other. Merry Christmas to you too..👍🏻
If you want something light I can highly recommend the HEM15, 8KG without counter weight 12KG with. If you need heavier payload. The HEM27
Thanks. Not sure about ioptron mounts, the GEM45 I had was a nightmare, ended up getting a refund. But in comparison to the Eq3... Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas!
@@AndyofAstro I have the HEM15, Compared to the EQ-AL55i Pro I had its a dream. Had no issues. Under an arc second guiding out of the box. Strain wave RA, Worm gear DEC.
Sounds like last night, only I wasn't singing. Windows is installing a update!
Merry Christmas Andy. I'm wondering whether you'd be able to outsource the second instance of NINA to another laptop? I suspect you're running out of bandwidth having 2 cameras running. They use USB 3 because they need to for transfer volume. Re: Cable management. Surely you can tie up the cables as you need and then remove them all in one as a "wiring harness"?
Merry Christmas. The issue is a Nina feature, Bray Falls also has this issue with his triple rig. I need to raise a support ticket with Nina. To synchronise the dither and exposures it has to be on one pc. I consolidated some of the cables but as I de rig, the dew heater cables have to be loose to enable this, so it's a challenge. Thanks for watching.
@@AndyofAstro One option could be using APT (running two instances). It works well with double rigs setups. I've used it and haven't had disconnections of equipment, and dithering works fine as well. But as you said, a double rig setup is complicated (I used to run two Evoguides 50 ED on an EQ6R-Pro, and the first session always took about two hours (sometimes more) to get everything aligned and focused. Good when the data starts to flow, but man it is fiddly. I can't even imagine how hard it would be with two newts! As for the small mount, have you tried maybe guiding only in RA? I have an EQ5 and I feel your pain: guiding it's not good, too much oscillation. Merry Christmas, good luck and clear skies!
I am not an expert on Newtonian telescopes, but I do think the material used in the 3D printer should be stable at a wide range of temperatures to maintain the collimation. Being it one piece instead of the multiple piece construction of most Newtonian telescopes, it could be an improvement if the temperature sensitivity of the printed parts is less.
Hello, I tried to follow your steps. My mount is an Orion Atlas EQ-G, with Version 4, SynScan. The firmware downloader shows that the remote controller connects with the firmware loader. But when i clicked the update button, there was no indication of the loading process nor the successful loading of firmware, the firmware loader show an error that the remote is not connected.
Thankú Andy. Interesting video.
If I stack two difrent nights saparetely it will not aling stars on Ps when I blend them in
Hi Great video If I stack multi night it will not lighted up in Ps Then I use difrent method Stack calibration tacking method Than take calibrated and stack on calibrated alinged stacking method Then take all session of night the alinged and stack on sigma clip stacking method but then the resonate have to many artifacts on the edge . My question is. What is the most multi night session to stack in astap
I missed the live stream. Great to see you got the dual rig up and running.
Just ordered one today and will use it on the new wide field scope i purchased during black friday.
I've found for these sorts of things, reverse engineering an INDI driver, getting the protocol and implementing it in arduino is actually really very easy. I'm not convinced the dome part is the hard bit (especially since it looks like you cut those bits left handed, in the dark! :P)
Well I've just managed to bag a new SV405CC for a crazy low price. I've watched your video so before it gets first light I wanted to run through some sanity checks. So I got setup with a light panel, set the camera for 4 seconds exposures, looking for the gain range as you show in the video. To my surprise the "problem" range is a lot smaller on my example. I would get full saturation of the sensor at the HGC mode gain of 127. So my plan is to use the gain 130 for images and Flats etc. My question is would I have to do super long Flat exposures still. I've been taking calibration frames to build a dark library ready for clear skies and first light. I tested flats with my light panel and 3 sheets of paper, the Flats are currently 0.27 seconds.
Congratulations on your purchase. Sounds like you are avoiding the problem gain range which is perfect. For the flats I generally try and get around 3 seconds if possible with more sheets of white paper, the reason for me is to get above my led panel flicker/refresh rate. It has been said that the 294c also likes long duration flats. However I am very much a believer that if your workflow is working for your images, then stick to it. Therefore experiment to see if you get calibrated images or not. Good luck and best wishes with your imaging.
@@AndyofAstro Thanks Andy, Managed to get first light on the Camera this evening for a brief hour. I believe the short flats calibrated the images ok.
Hi Andy sorry I missed your live stream , looks like you got the twin scopes up and running, excellent work my friend looking forward to seeing what you can do with this setup
Thank you!
Wouldnt the 3d printed spider obscure more light than the stock one?
Have you no longer got the iOptron?
It didn't work out for me, so I returned it.
Hi, After your previous issues with the 200P-DS did you have anything major with the Stellalyra. I'm considering buying the Quattro 150P but have also been looking at the Stellalyra 6" F4
The stella lyra gso are certainly better build quality than sw. I do love my sw130pds scopes because they are so easy to modify, super light and easy to set up giving good results. The 200pds was just partly from me not knowing that you do need to nurture it to make it reliable, but also the setup from the factory was questionable. I was also afraid of modifications due to voiding warranty. One issue with all big scopes is they are hard work due to size and weight and this directly effects how often I use mine. It is a serious effort to set up a large scope, but they can deliver good results, but are also hard work. Ask yourself do I want to set up a larger or smaller scope, as the best scope is the one you use the most of all.
@@AndyofAstro I currently use a 130P non pds that came with the EQ2 mount bundle. My thoughts moving forward were 150mm either F4 or F5. So far I've been thinking the Quattro 150P with the included Coma Corrector. But there is also the stella lyra F4 ad F5 options. I don't think any of those will be an issue size wise. I posted the question on Stargazers lounge but immediately got lots of people complaining about the Stella Lyra and no one really mentioning the Quattro.
@@ArdsleyAstro I've not used a quattro, Quiv the lazy geek has a lot of videos on his one. I've got three gso, an 8 inch f12 CC, 6inch RC and my F5 Stella Lyra 1000mm newt. I've mostly used the Newtonian, it's ok. My most used scope is the 130pds as it takes no time to rig, it's light and fairly cheap, but does need nurturing to get it to sing. I guess time will tell with my other scopes.
Andy I'm impressed that looks like a wonderful Rig and I hope to see more soon. Here's to wishing for clearer skys.
Thanks
Love the 3D printed parts and the twin rig, it's awesome! Well Done! My friend, here in Liverpool and NW England generally, we've had, by my count, just 12 cloudless night skies all year!! And some of those "cloud free" nights were actually "scattered clouds passing by with openings" kind of nights!! It drives me nuts!! LOL.
Thanks
Good stuff Andy, thank you.
