Not saying it's easy, but the songs are generally short forms, 2 or 3 parts, and they repeat. The ornaments are form of variation, and when repeating the entire form multiple times, it sounds like a lot. But these songs were meant to be learned by ear on 1 or 2 listens, so they are made to be simple. Great musicians take it to another level with their ornaments
Songs, legends, plays, stories etc were not written for thousands of years, and were transferred from generation to generation by memory. What is amazing, is how much "we" (modern, "classically trained" musicians) have lost the ability to memorize pieces, a skill that would have been considered trivial a couple of hundred years ago.
@@TonOfHam Actually, this tune is a good deal more simple than it sounds. The ornaments make it more difficult, but if you slowed it down and learned one part at a time (they're usually 2 themes - an 'A' theme and a 'B' theme), You could probably learn the basic tune after hearing it once or twice. Getting it up to speed and adding all the ornaments is a different question, though.
When I picked up the whistle at first I thought this too but it turns out it's not actually very hard. It's not so much that you're "remembering" like consciously thinking of the notes or anything. Not sure how else to explain it but after you play it through a few times its kind of like your fingers just know where to go. Like walking or something. You don't have to remember how to do it, your body just knows
Way back in the 70's my pipe teacher gave Sean Potts a lovely Ralph Sweet wooden whistle when the Chieftains came touring through Chicago. Potts liked it, but he stuck with his old nickel plated Generation . ;-)
I remember Friday evenings…..I was around 11 or 12 years old….being dropped off (by my teacher Paddy Friel) to her cottage on the outskirts of Spiddal for a lesson, along with 3 others. I'm 41 years old now. I play the box, but I enjoyed the lessons. Thanks Mary.
What a lovely part of the country . Currently working in a hotel over there called the connemara coast hotel the Area is amazing and Mary's only down the road .....I wonder would she give me a lesson
I just had a C one ordered from e-bay a day ago as well. I have a backround in playing a recorder and clarenet and have COMPLETELY forgoten it all. So, in a sense I have no backround as well. Never learned piano, but I play. I just sat down, pressed a key, heard a familier note, and walked my fingers across the musical land of black and white, and made my life more colorful. All you need to learn to play anything is a good ear, passion, determination and patience. Familier sounds will guide you.
It's long been said: If you get a good Generation whistle, you've got a **good** whistle... I have a bunch of Generations, ONE is really good, the rest are OK-fine. They can be tweaked to good advantage (instructions are on TH-cam.).
The feeling applies to every musician when watching a master... lol. I get the same feeling watching Paco De Lucia. The word 'how' rattles around my head.
I know how you feel, I have a clarke D, and just bought a £60 silver-dixon. I can play a few tunes well enough, fields of Athenry, tell-me-ma, and a few others. And Mary knocks out an amazing tune on what looks like a 5-quid faedog
Can someone explain how she maintains her blood oxygen level and doesn't black out? Circular breathing? She seems to have no time for in-breaths. Her speed, fluidity and sense of rhyrhm are phenomenal.
Thanks for posting this great video. I had heard of Mary Bergin but never see her in action. In a world of fancy whistles costing thousands she gets such magic out of a £5 Generation. Incredible!
I'm Turkish and i love this music. I hope one day there will be no illusions of seperation between rations and we all enjoy our cultures together. Without any hate.

@@katelijnhovestad8382 Ha! I actually did, but not as well as she plays it! I used a program called the Amazing Slow Downer to slow it down 8x so I could actually hear what's going on. The thing you don't hear at normal speed is that every time Mary repeats a theme she plays it slightly differently. What a legend!
Absolutely glorious, and performed on a cheap mass produced straight bore whistle at that. Today you can buy fine whistles for the price of a slightly used auto, which to me is an offense against the entire concept of the whistle. I published a way to build one and also an uilleann pipe cheap using telescoped brass tubes to simulate the taper bores of original tin whistles/pipe that preserves their tone and octave intonation. Well she's a great player, I'm so glad you let us see her playing.
I ordered a Feadog... I wish did more searching to find it in black. lol But I've played a Feadog and its a good one. And I ordered a Clarke Sweetone, but I've never played one of those. I think any of them would do fine, but if you want a safe bet, go with the Feadog.

Sometimes, what amazes me most about Irish music is how the heck people manage to remember these amazing pieces by heart!

dont suppose you knew the Parson family, they lived in Spiddal in 1990
The first is "The Maid on the Green". The second tune is a version of "The Gallant Tipperary Boys" and associated with Padraig O'Keefe.
thank you!!
Thanks for pointing that out!
She's one of those people that makes playing an instrument look effortless. Amazing.
Actually she gives the opposite impression, that it is frenetic and there is no time for breath or to enjoy. It is not just her either.
Honestly the penny whistle is one of the easier instruments to learn, but I do agree that she makes it look effortless.
@@annep.1905 easy to learn, hard to master
@@Ben-zh4nz True. I learned how to play it in about a month, but a long time later I still have a lot to learn to master it.

What a beautiful piece, I listen over and over she's magical
