Can I just say how much I appreciate starting off learning something that isn't Twinkle Twinkle Little Star or some other nonsense? I feel like I'm actually playing music. This is great, thank you for putting this video up!!
Hello from Brazil. Thank you very much for the excellent class, you explained it very calmly. I have a Clarke flute here and now that I discovered your channel I found it a treasure.
I know this video is 4 years old, and I don’t know if you will read this, but I my whistle just arrived the other day, and all I accomplished is scaring my dogs out of the room. I can’t wait to try this tomorrow morning when I have the house to myself. Thank you for posting Chris, I will give you an update. Cheers.
What can I say. Great lesson, I’m subscribed and can’t wait for more. Thank you. I went to County Clare, discovered Micho Russell’s music and now I have my own tin whistle with an excellent teacher. Bravo
I have been wanting to learn how to play the Irish tin whistle for many years. This was he first site I clicked on and I am delighted to say it was so easy to follow that I can now play the Polka all the way through without too may scratchy notes! Thoroughly recommend this to anyone. Thank you Chris!
Aloha from Hawaii! ❤thank you for your video. I always wanted to play an instrument growing up but never got a chance. I am a beginner and am now going after my dream. God bless you. You are very patient teacher. Very easy to understand. Keep posting videos it is blessing people.
Thaks so much that is fabulous and very much appreciated I am A 77 year old and had the whistle for years but never knew how to play it. Now of course with a good bit of practice my aim is to make this tune sound like it does when you play it.
I just bought a whistle in my holidays. I appreciate starting off with a real nice Irish music. For my skills, as a binnger and not speaking very good english, it is mostly to fast played for me. Im realy glad that I found the notes wirtten down.
Thank you for your lessons. They are easy to follow and you feel like you achieving something. I bought a whistle in Ireland whilst we were there with my Irish husband and have always wanted to play it.
Thanks for an inspiring start to my tin whistle adventure! I love the subtle note changes. I need a basic grasp of playing before I have to teach a class of 8 year olds next week!
Thank you so much! I am a complete beginner. Am just so inspired and spellbound by the ancient sounds of the whistle, that I really wanted to learn it. Today my whistle arrived and I started my whistle journey with your video. What a success already! Really enjoy your calm spirit & the way you teach. Thanks for your being. 🙏🧡
I learned how to play the tin whistle in primary school but havent played it in ages, I recently found it in one of my drawers and decided to try to learn how to play it again. Edit: video was really good btw
The most awkward part of this tune is getting the high D alternating with the high E. I am working on that and then will try that jig you teach, Out on the Ocean. Thanks a lot.
Here I was casually looking for more beautiful songs... and I ended up finding something else I needed! Just got my first penny whistle and this video helped so much! By the end I was playing a duet of the polka with my da’s fiddle!
First two hours of first day on my whistle (same as yours how coincidence) already playing first part. Slowly, but playing. You're so clear! Thank you!
I last had a go at playing the whistle 50-odd years ago, and didn't get beyond Spancil Hill. Then I stumbled on this. I'm away with the mixer again now! Thank you, Chris! 👍
Chris you have made this so easy to learn! I bought my whistle while visiting my husband’s family in Ireland and have tried a few times since then. It wasn’t until I started playing your little tune I actually got it. Thanks so much for putting these videos out!
The universe must be on my side today because it led me here! THANK YOU so much for this exceptionally easy & enjoyable beginner lesson! I love this tune! New sub and delighted to have found you- even if it is 3 years later!
Dont know how i got her, never heard about this instrument before. But im glad i stumbled in her. Becuse now im very exited and cant wait for my new order of a tin whistle to arriive....
@@ChrisMcMullan Dude I got two new kittens and they were sitting mesmorized by my playing. They loved the sound of the tin whistle. So cool. Looking forward to getting better and entertaining them at a higher level
Started today watching my first tin whistle video's. I also play guitar bass and a bit of synth. What i noticed when you told about a constant airflow is that practicing at night while keeping the neighbours in mind this is very hard to do 😂
Thank you so much Chris! It's my first night, trying to learn tin whistle and I can already play the polka! I must say that I feel proud of myself 😉 Thanks to you 😃
This is the first tune I've ever learnt on a tin whistle, thank you for putting this up as its been very easy to follow, its given me an appreciation of this simple instrument. I've always struggled learning anything so im pleased to have this down and like others have said not just learning boring baby songs. Subbed and will check out your other vids. Thanks
I loved this Chris. Thank you. As others have said, I thought there was no way I could manage this, but I did. I love your teaching style and I love the do-able challenge of this “proper” tune. Thanks again 😊x
@@ChrisMcMullan It is the subtle things like trills and that make the song sound Irish that I also hope you will teach us. I notice you almost tapping a hole rather than holding it down. I have been playing the Native American flute which uses these flourishes differently
Hi Chris. First off, let me say that your videos are great. You're an excellent musician, I am a real fan! My only small critique of this this video is just a suggestion/request (from the perspective of a music teacher), to make no differentiation of the hand position for LH/RH players. The reason being that, as you mention, many people will start with whistle, then move to other related instruments - most of these other related instruments will require LH on top position, regardless of being left or right handed. Otherwise, thanks so much for sharing your expertise! :) Cheers, Michael
Wow I’m glad I found your channel for several reasons. I recently ordered a practice uilleann pipe set but it’s a year wait so I decided to learn the whistle in the mean time. This is a great tutorial and you’re also a fantastic piper
Loved the video and you taking the time to teach the craft. This is an older video at this point and I haven't watched anything else of ours as of yet. That being said, I'm not sure what our editing abilities are but it would be awesome if you had the notes on screen for us to follow along with. Thanks again for the content! :)
Hi Chris still trying my best but it would be easier if you were to turn to the left so i can see exactly where your fingers are going as straght on video,s i just see fingers all over the place ifr that makes sence.. apart from that Brilliant mate, Dave O
Such fun to learn this tune orally with you after working through the beginner book - love hearing and being able to imitate the ornaments you’re using - thank you!! 🎶
Chris, this is the first video of yours I have watched. The format is excellent, I find it easy to follow your instruction. Also your including the notes in your description is helpful. The way you slow down and teach thoroughly is effective for me. Also, your personality is pleasant and you have a kind smile. You helped me learn my first whistle tune this week. Thank you for the video, I have subscribed and will check for other content that I may find useful.
hi chris,im really enjoying this first lesson from you for beginners as i am one of them and a late starter, but very determined to succeed,i was wondering if you might tell me the name of this first polka, thanks again for all your kind help.tony

I have just purchased mine today and I'm both terrified at receiving an abso from neighbours and excited to learn 😂
I remember, as a kid, wondering why the hell I had to learn the recorder. Well, now, 50 years later, I know why.
Give it a go again Anthony :) never too late to learn 👍
