Its great to have the knowledge allowing you to repair things right the first time. Looks easy...and, if you follow what's happening, you can troubleshoot too! Justin...YOU'RE THE MAN!
Had ‘70 model, bought it used from a neighbor in ‘74. Had some similar issues. Was 15 years old had a motorcycle license, needed transportation around north Harris County, Tx. (Spring/Klein/Tomball) Added a Hooker exhaust, K&N and larger jets. Loved that bike, learned how to work on motors and suspension because of her. Thanks for the journey back in time.
I’ve restored a number of ‘70s and ‘80s Japanese enduros, so much fun. I’m currently working on a Yamaha CT3. It’s amazing what’s still available for it, parts-wise. A lot of NOS, some new aftermarket rubber pieces and eBay used stuff. I usually put in way more money than the value of the bike, but I don’t care. Putting these old classics back on the road in pristine condition (other than paint, I usually leave that alone) gives me joy. Part of the fun is finding and correcting other “mechanic’s” mistakes.
Oh. My. Days. That is one gorgeous, gorgeous bike. I am so pleased that you plan to leave it largely unrestored. For a bike like that, it would be so good. P. S. I like watching Justice's channel, too.....
I feel your joy, I picked up a 1980 XL250S for myself and a 1980 XL500S for my son. The XL500S has a broken kick start shaft. It came with the start shaft and manual. His headlight switch also has the twisted wire repair. After a good but used cylinder and piston started up last weekend. My XL250S is next up on the get run list.
Great video... what a find! Also, if you guys love bikes and their engines, Watch Allen Millyard... he adds extra cylinders to his bikes and makes them all look factory!
Getting pelted by weeds, aahh the finer things in life 😀 *Mustie1* has thousands of videos going back forever, very cool of you to give him a shout out!
Your buddy Steve sounds like a friend of mine's buddy Steve. I'm really happy for you getting that beautiful bike fixed and running around putting big smiles on people's faces again
I love seeing old bikes like this come back to life, that Honda holds so many memories and has so much character it deserves to live on. I'd love to see more videos like this on the channel, great job.
I started out on a 79 Suzuki pe 250 twin shocker with 3.5 inches of travel on both ends . Had a blast learning to ride. Then moved to a 81 Yamaha it 250 with 13inches of travel and had to relearn how to ride. I truly wish i was still able to ride but after my accident it is hard to walk. Both bike i mentioned i got from a scrap yard and rebuilt myself. I once enjoyed turning wrenches but now i can only dream of doing it.
Mustie's channel is great! Even downloaded a huge library of his videos on motorcycle & small engine repair for reference material. 1st thing you did...checked for spark...definitely a Mustie fan :)
Great find! Excellent diagnosis and repair! The odd thing is why would someone have taken the top end apart at 1500 miles? Had to be a blown head gasket.
Oh man no way , you did not find that bike in that good of condition, down to the vintage keychain, love that, and amazed by the GOOD OF THE LAND FIEST Montague
Great video, eating a bacon sandwich and a cup of tea. Enjoyed that you spoke as you went along, makes it more interesting. Love Mustie1, he has been working on a stationary engine.
I was one of those lucky kids my parents bought me a 1973 Honda cl 100 when I was 11 I had a Bs 3.5 hp mini bike since age 6 my cousin gave me and my uncle showed me how to tear down the engine and put it back together! Every winter I tore down that engine cleaned it and put new parts in it and gaskets lol it was like my tinker toy it was amazing and made it possible for me to have the new cl 100 when I was 11 ! I rode that Honda until 1985 I think to school to work to the trails only ever bought tires and inner tubes and a new chain in all those miles ! It ceased is why I gave her away I’m sure it was do too 65k miles it had ! I wore her out !
Hey Justin, I still have my 71 SL70 from when I was a kid. Had a blast with it way back when. And yes, I watch mustie1 all the time. Sorry I can't come to the Fest as I'm traveling. I'll take a gander from the live feed. Take care my friend.
Ahhhh!! Awesome! Man, I was getting more and more excited as you pulled stuff off and when you fired her up... big ole grin So cool! Bring it to the Fest!! Edit: Getting a fresh build on those forks should help- so pumped it worked out so well!
What a Great survivor bike! I never had a Honda back in the day, I had Yamaha DT and RD series bikes. Later on I came to appreciate Honda bikes for their relative simplicity and durability. After sitting for 20-30 years, you clean the carb, file the points and they fire right up. (IF they haven't been mis-assembled, lol) Parts availability for 60s-80s Hondas is pretty good, too, either OEM or aftermarket. Nice score! Edit: Yes, an avid Mustie1 subscriber. :)
Luv'ed that SL series Honda. I looked everywhere around here for a SL 350 but no luck. There were several different sizes, like a 70,100,125,175,250,350 and maybe more. And yes I watch most of Mustie 1's videos. s
I still have the same SL175 that I rode to school and work when I was 15, no tag or licence needed in GA back in 1978. funny but bought it from chevrolet dealer that took it on trade, paid 400.00 for it.Thanks.
The carb is prolly jetted for non ethanol fuel, if you use ethanol gas you need bigger jets.My XR650 main jet for instance is 155 for non ethanol and its 158 for ethanol gas.
I was going to say the same... I had an 82 Susuki GS550 that hesitated bad in the upper gears, Had a guy look at it and his first response was original Leaded gas vs the new, at that time, unleaded gas. He opened up the jets and the bike ran better then it did new after that!

So impressed with your confidence that you'll get it done. And your skill to deliver on that. Sweet!

Great find! Excellent diagnosis and repair! The odd thing is why would someone have taken the top end apart at 1500 miles? Had to be a blown head gasket.

Mustie1 is the best. Love his channel.
I still have the same SL175 that I rode to school and work when I was 15, no tag or licence needed in GA back in 1978. funny but bought it from chevrolet dealer that took it on trade, paid 400.00 for it.Thanks.
Great call keeping that repair. Looks like epoxy to me, great choice over wire.
The carb is prolly jetted for non ethanol fuel, if you use ethanol gas you need bigger jets.My XR650 main jet for instance is 155 for non ethanol and its 158 for ethanol gas.
