In Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather Part II, Frank Pentangeli and Fredo Corleone greet each other after after having not seen each other after a long time, both jubilant and talkative. Pentangeli then introduces Cicci, saying “You remember Willie Cicci who was with the old man Clemenza in Brooklyn?” and then all of a sudden the mood changes, there is a pause, and Fredo is quiet and sombre before saying “We were all upset about that. Heart attack, huh?” and Willie chimes in, saying “No no, that was no heart attack” and an emotional Frankie then says “That’s what I’m here to see your brother Mike about.”
And when he goes to see Mike he discusses his beef with the Rosato brothers, with it seemingly being that Clemenza promised some territories to the Rosato brothers after he died, but Pentangeli refusing to give the territories to them. That’s how Michael puts it, but Pentangeli says that Clemenza promised them nothing, and that he hated them, and the Rosato brothers are giving Pentangeli grief, taking hostages and whatnot, and he’s unable to do anything about it because Michael won’t let him, as the brothers are backed up by the Hymen Roth and Michael is in the middle of some delicate business with Roth.
The point is, there seems to have been issues with the Corleone family, run by Clemenza and Pentangeli, and the Rosato brothers.
But that line from Cicci, “it was no heart attack” you’d think that would open up a whole can of worms, that it would be referenced later, that it would be revealed that Clemenza was murdered by someone we know, but it’s literally never bought up again. So what’s all this about, and how exactly did Clemenza die?

I never personally came to the conclusion that Frado was an idiot. just someone who was born into a world that wasn't meant for him and one he cant really ever leave and therefore he did what he need to to survive. the brothers to me always represented all the different aspects of their Father's personality, both the good and the bad or the light and the dark if you rather. Frado to me represents the caring or loving side of their Father or in other words the part of him self that he sacrificed or risked the death of if you rather when he chose the life path he willingly chose. This was especially pointed out in the shot/sequence right after Vito got shot and was recovering in his bed in his Home and everyone left the room after showing their respects to him and he and Frado where the only ones in the room and all Frado did was sit across from his Father looking guilty and remorseful but also with a hint of questioning in his face as to say something in the nature of 'your such a good hearted man by nature, why did you choose this horrible life'.

I have to say that Clemenza was one of my favorite characters, because he was so loyal, and the scene where he talks about having to cook for 20 guys suggests an aspect of his life -- a hobby of cooking -- that makes him more human and relatable. Having him kiss Michael's hand at the end of the movie is a beautiful touch, suggesting the feudal structure of the ( movie ) Mafia, which adds tremendous depth, and suggests the Sicilian old world historical origins. I am so glad the writers didn't have him betray Michael.

Francis Ford Coppola had a contract dispute with the guy that played Clemenza. It was his wife that wanted more money for her husband on the second movie. Francis Ford Coppola said no to the contract dispute. That's why Robert Duvall wasn't in the third one due to contract dispute. It's not about what you think the movie is about it's about who pays the bills in Hollywood it's nature of the business in Hollywood either you in or you out it's nothing to do about if you like the movie it's about making money welcome to the real world people.

    • @theBaron0530

You have a point about the business, but it's interesting to see how Coppola had to deal with these contract disputes in his script and storyline. I knew that Castellano wanted more money, but it's interesting to consider the items in "Godfather II" that are the traces of Clemenza's story. And I think the way the change was dealt with was a little clumsy.

It's true LV was started by Bugsy Siegel, a Jewish gangster who rolled with Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky, but sometime in the 50s-60s, it became pretty much a monopoly for the Chicago Outfit, while NYC took Atlantic City. also a shame Tom Hagen wasn't in GF3 for the same reason - Tom Hagen betraying Michael instead of Coppola inventing Don Altobello (which made no sense because he should have been at the very least mentioned in GF1 or GF2) would have had a lot more impact too... or if he wasn't going to betray Michael he would have been a better chapter than the lawyer that George Hamilton played... Richard S. Castellano being born in 1933 would have been about 41 years old, in Godfather 2. That would not make him a old man.

Richard Castellano wasn't fired from the movie. He simply wasn't hired for his ridiculous demands. Richard Castellano, who was a relatively unknown actor, or at least certainly not a big name in the acting field, had the audacity to demand that he be allowed to write his own lines for The Godfather Part 2! For God sake, even Marlon Brando would never make such a demand when asked to make a movie!

What I would love to see is a multi-narrative crime film, where they show different perspectives. For example, in Godfather I, I would have loved to see the scene where Barzini approached Tessio, as well as their conversation. Did Tessio go to Barzini, or did Barzini go to Tessio? If Barzini made the first move, why? How did he know Tessio wouldn't play the triple agent and rat Barzini out to Michael and conspire to kill Barzini? How did they conspire to kill Michael in Godfather II? That would be very interesting a scenes to see.

If Clemenza was a loyal Capo who died of a heart attack; they were gonna say it "wasn't no heart attack" (it was the Rosatos fault).

Is it just me or did anyone else find it extremely badass the way Carlo gets in the car, goes to put on his seat belt and as he turns around,
    **”Hello, Carlo”**
I don’t know what it is about that scene that just screams BADASS the way this moron thinks he’s off the hook after the stupidity he did and confessed to on top of of it and he gets in the car all relieved and sure enough when he sees Clemenza it’s like when you see the monster or killer in a horror film.
On a side note they did great character development in all Mr. Clemenza’s scenes. To his wife, family, and neighbors he looked like a calm, quiet normal guy and as the movie goes on you see him for what he truly is which was him being a straight up ruthless killing machine. He has that everyman, favorite uncle vibe to him that lets the audience know that even though Sonny and some members suspected him quite a few times, he was one of the most loyal people to the family a mobster could want on their team. This ending was their way of confirming the truth that he wasn’t a traitor after all. I loved the character so much that I’m glad they replaced him with Pentangelli in the second film because it would be sloppy writing to have him snitch like his replacement did!

Considering how well the first movie did, I think it would have been nice if they gave a bit more detail into what happened to Clamenza. I think it would have clarified more to the audience why the family left New York and Michael’s purpose into isolating the truth to who was behind this bad chain of events. It would have explained a bit more as to why Michael was playing this real cool and calculating method because he suspects someone powerful is behind it all. He didn’t want to tip his hand. And Clamenza meant a lot to him.

I love all 3 movies, and I believe that it’s one of the best motion pictures ever made. Marlon Brando was a popular actor during the 1950’s and the 1960’s. He played the part of Fletcher Christian in Mutiny On The Bounty. I believe an English actor named Trevor Howard played Captain Bligh in the movie. Marlon Brando was a handsome Hollywood icon who was quite popular with the ladies. I remember my Mother telling me that he even dated Jackie Kennedy before she met Onassis.

The end of godfather left many unfilled holes. Tessio and Clemenza had no children or captains in their families to
take over? Tessio is taken out and his existence disappears?
The ending with Kate, though the premise for much of II is not what Michael would have done.
It only took two minutes for Kate to know Michael lied.
It would have been the perfect time for Michael to tell her part of his plans and blame someone else for Carlo's death/actually
disappearance. He would have anticipated his nutty sisters reaction.
"Kate were moving to Las Vegas to get away from the violence here. We were setting Carlo up in a Casino position.
