99.9% of the time these characters like X-23, Batgirl and She Hulk are not gender swaps for the sake of adding women in. Batgirl is not Female Bruce Wayne and She Hulk is not female Bruce Banner. They are their own characters with different stories and struggles, but with similar abilities. They use existing comic title names to draw in an audience. They could just have easily used She Hulk's alias The Gamma Gal back in the day (or my preferred Jolly Green Jen for a joke issue) but The Hulk is already known, so it's a marketing technique to call her She Hulk. Many of these characters have been around for over 20 years and are well loved, well rounded fan favourites. Not something that their creators felt pressured into doing for the sake of a female audience. If people would remember this and stop being so salty that'd be great.

Uh, it's not really about gender swap? It's more about her being X-23 as she is more popularly known for. You know, being herself as her own unique character. Wolverine can be Wolverine. She did NOT have to be Wolverine. From my opinion, this was made to bring up the hype once more for "Wolverine". But I felt it took a step backwards rather forward. I prefer X-23 with her own uniqueness rather than masked by Wolverine's name. Infact, she could have had another unique name if she wanted. And even so, I think X-23 looked much better as X-23 than her with the costume as Wolverine.

X-Men: Evolition (2000-2003) predates Orphan black (2013-), so as a character, she's older, but that of course doesn't mean that she wasn't ripped of from somewhere else.
When it comes to different clones with different abilities. Spiderman used to have these as well.

+Quenton Gilliam I feel you, but given Laura's relationship with Logan and the common ground they share I think it's pretty fitting for her to carry on the mantle of Wolverine. I also gave Jane Foster a pass for similar reasons.

I think the big two have tried, but established characters sell better than new characters. The big 2 and especially Marvel is just trying to give more types of people representation, more faithfully represent their growing fan base and the world as it is today. Let's not forget that most comic book characters were created when some people didn't even have equal rights. So keep in mind that those characters were created for a certain demographic and everyone else just has to fall in line. Besides people cry when they change things, no matter how they do it. They could change the race, gender, sexual orientation or just change to a new white guy and it would just be one group or another complaining. So I don't care what they change as long as the character is good and the stories are good.
Wolverine (Logan) is my favorite character and I love this book. So whatever...
***** You have to look at thor atm, while the story is really heartwarming you have to recognice the feminist bullshit behind it. The allfather is now bad and he looks like the personification of a patriarch! Again, if you would do more comics with strong female chars, do it, but don't change the loved ones for no fucking reason. The whole marvel/dc fanbase is, and thats just a fact, mostly male. Star Wars the same, now its the second female hero, while the true fanbase mostly is all male. I don't see it. My girlfriend only wen't into star wars cause of me, and i don't see what all this gender change is about!

I work at a genetics lab and I'm trying to create a Comic Book Girl 19 Man, but so far it hasn't worked. I've also tried making a Jenna Marbles Man, and a Katy Perry Guy. But all of my clones so far have been failures. I really don't know what I'm doing wrong. I keep trying to make my man clones - but all I get is more women. Stupid science!

Thor was different because the man himself is still around and approves. I doubt anyone would enjoy a female Magneto, a female Ironwoman or a male Storm.
+Rawbeard Laura is her own character and has had her own runs before becoming Wolverine. Logan has been a father to her and while she shares some traits with him, she as her own personality. This is part of her character. She wants to honor her father's memory by carrying on the mantle of Wolverine.
Corporaticus Greedicus If you have ever read any of the comics that featured them together, they have a father daughter relationship. For her entire childhood, she was locked away and used as a tool, isolated with no real knowledge of the world. Logan shows her that she is more than that. That she is a person. He offers her guidance and acts as a role model for her. It is like he adopts her. He doesn't see her as his clone.

Well, X-23 is more than a decade older than Orphan Black, but that doesn't mean she wasn't ripped of from somewhere. When it comes to the multiple, individually different clones theme, that also has already been used by marvel long before X-23 was thought up.
They should give her a five o'clock shadow. Ease everyone into it.

Since X-23 is older, I don't think so. I don't know if the idea was stolen from something even older, but X-23 predates Orphan Black by at least 10 years. (She first appearedin the X-Men cartoon series X-Men Evolution (2000-2003). Anywaqy the multiple clones theme was used in Spiderman Comics of the previous century as well, it's not that original.

I really don't get it. She was her own thing, I really liked that character. Then they slapped the suit on her, hoping she will go main stream, its cheap and its just freaking sad. Who are these people that get into comics that come up with this crap? What happened where you have this many people who are incapable of being original.

Maybe I'm wrong. I don't really read x-men/wolverine books, so my grasp of the character is not as strong as some of the die hards, but it seems they could just fill his position on the team with somebody else.
Regardless, I don't really have strong feelings about it one way or another.
To kill of major characters just to change their sex is stupid. Why couldn't both of them be alive.
They were. X23 was created for x-men evolution and was adapted into the main comics continuity. It was a rocky start. But they decided that Wolverine had to die to shake things up and she just happened to be there.
Something that's always nagged me at the back of my head. There's always been a comic generation where a male superhero is replaced by a female version of himself.
But why hasn't there been the other way aground as well? As in female established character becoming a male?

I can identify with a cloned white girl who used murders people for a living, why is this such a big deal?
I would like this character but her design is godawful. The 2 hand claws looks stupid and the toe claw looks even more stupid. Also, the real Wolverine's been dead since 1993.
Why Can't marvel come up with new Characters instead of just taking their existing characters and changing their gender or race

+Joeyal123 X-23 is a new character. She just adopted the title of "Wolverine" Now that Logan is stuck in a bucket of adamantium. Same goes for Sam as Captain America. The only iffy one for me is fem-Thor. Jane Foster being "Thor" is really, really forced and contrived. X-23 and Sam have history, and they've paid their dues. Same goes for Carol Danvers when she adopted the Captain Marvel title, or Amadeus Cho, now that he's running around as the Hulk. Everyone else got to be the "replacements" gradually. They did the dirty work. Jane just got promoted cuz gotta cash in on that fem-dollah.

I'm cool with replacement characters to freshen the decades old comic book history up a bit. But it's also one of the reasons why I stopped buying mainstream comics. I want Spider-Man, Captain America, Wolverine and Thor to be Peter Parker, Steve Rogers, James Howlett and, well, Thor, and not anyone else.
And some characters seem to be untouchable, nobody would dare to make Kylo Ren the new Darth Vader or kill Bruce Wayne and have Jimmy Olson be Batman for 2 years just to be different.

+2nd3rd1st They kill Bruce Wayne all the time. Most recent comics end with his death with Commissioner Gordon becoming an iron man batman hybrid. Azrael and Dick Grayson have taken over too. They never last of course, but I do feel they could pay more respect to the new characters. Dick Grayson was Robin, became Nightwing, took over as batman with Bruce's son as Robin. It's an interesting dynamic. To just slap a popular name on a new character just puts them in someone's shadow, basically says their existence could be altered at any time to give the role back to the original. At least with Robin the mantle is meant to be passed multiple times, those characters are apprentices and they all grow up and create their own heroes.

While I think they've done some great things with her character specifically, I'm so tired with the demographics game. The marketing move to take a well established, popular character and make a ethnic or alternately gendered character knock-off just doesn't do justice to the demographics they're marketing to...plus, I'd like to see some originality. It just strikes me as some really lazy work. This new tactic is happening left and right while comic companies are shooting down artists and writers ideas to try and start up truly original characters because they're afraid of really stepping out of their bounds and taking a risk.

I do understand the need for powerful female super heroes. Believe me I do. I just don't think that it should come at the substraction of male super heroes. why do they have to replace male super heroes? Can they not just create new characters that are strong females?

For one thing, NOBODY knows how to write "strong female characters". What has happened is that the "strong female characters" come at the expense of male characters, as you say. And not just by replacing them. We also see characters like Star Lord become goofy, bumbling morons in order to defer to the strong assertive female character, Kitty Pride.
Who wants that?
I don't for one second believe that comic fans are as sexist as the world is trying to portray. I, for one, have always read books that featured strong females. My favorite book in the world are things like Leave It To Chance, Peter David's Supergirl, Strangers In Paradise and others.
What's pissing male fans off about these modern Marvel books has nothing to do with them being women and everything to do with the stories being told.

No I disagree with this. Why become Wolverine? I preferred her to be X-23 and Wolverine be Wolverine. She's still unique as X-23, she doesn't need to be Wolverine fgs. She looks much better without the costume and being herself as everyone knows her being, that is X-23. She could even have another unique name if she wanted, but not Wolverine. Like really.
it should never be just about the name or costume. and multiple aliases is normal i.e. Peter Parker, Spidey, Web head, Spider Man. I do see your point though. I see Laura Kinney. X23 and Wolverine are merely code names.
Normally I find the gender swapped hero thing to be pretty dumb, but chick wolverine seems pretty okay so far.
Though I did prefer her as x-23... Don't really understand why she couldn't have been continued to be built up into something awesome and wholly herself.
Laura as Wolverine really bugs me for a couple of reasons. The biggest reason is It feels like it goes against all the character development she's gone through throughout the years, especially in her solo book. Laura's story has always been about her trying to figure herself out and finding a place she can belong. She didn't want to be Wolverine, she wanted to be her own person. But now she is Wolverine. X-23 is one of my favorite comic character and it just really bothers me Marvel went this direction with her.
Heck now I want Black Widower. I dun give a fuck, I want that NOW.

X23 was introduced before wolverine was killed off. They killed of Wolverine because they had exhausted every possible storyline and decided that killing Wolverine would bring some edge to the much more darker part of the marvel universe. Besides I thought the way thy killed Wolverine seemed very much in character with Wolverine personality. But after Wolerines death what do they do next. Should they just bury the characters legacy. That would be very disrespectful to the character. And if theywould pass on the opersons to another character what would you prefer, a wolverine knock off or a completely new character that would be risky but also unexpected. I'm not calling you sexist. We're all bummed out about Wolverine death. But thy did need to change things up, otherwise it would have Ben the same thing like it has been for the last 40 fucking years. Look at how they put the trinity at DC comics in a pedestal.

First, let me say, that I'm a DC and independent comic guy myself and that I don't really have a horse in the whole "Marvel-race". On to the topic of changing super heroes:
It's not that there are more female super heroes. That's great! More diversity is awesome. Life is diverse and art should be too. It's that they are taking away all these characters us guys have a strong bond to since childhood. A lot of people just feel like all this is some kind of "man-shaming". Like marvel and a lot of other sources are like "It's not okay for you to like Guy-Thor anymore! That's for white cishet sexist assholes! Here: Have the female Thor with breast cancer instead!"
It's great to give role models and a stronger representation to girls/women/LGBT people or ethnicities other than white. It's a welcome trend comics need to stay relevant. I've always felt, that comics are a great medium to capture the current Zeitgeist and this needs to continue. It's great to make all these heroes more layered and vulnerable (i.e. breast cancer). But why do they have to kill off/replace/take away characters that have been around FOREVER instead of creating anything new? Newsflash: Diversity does not mean excluding white men. It means EVERYONE is welcome! Diversity is not to exclude a group in favor of another. Diversity is not invalidating a love for a character or series you've had for ages, just because said character has a penis and is white, or - god forbid - YOU might have a penis and be white. That's what people are pissed about. X-23 sounds like an awesome character... As X-23, but not as Wolverine, who just got killed off, because fuck everything white and male, that's why. Just like Jessica Jones for example has become one of my absolute favorite comic book related characters in recent memories, because she is Jessica Jones and not Jessica Jones who is a clone of Tony Stark and the new Iron Man. She is fresh, cool, and unique, and that's why nobody is raging at her existence in comparison to Jane Foster as Thor. At least that's how it feels to some of the traditionalist comic book readers who are so riled up, I think. (although, granted, some of the answers I've read to this whole problematic are just sexist and ridiculous).

IDK! This is the first time I've heard anything about a female Wolverine comic. I'd be surprised if it last for a significant period of time. I don't understand why she couldn't have three claws and simply be Logan's daughter. Now, that would've been more of an interesting story to read (IMO).

+Kwesi Marcano IMO, the writers have done just that...chosen the easy route. Considering today's world (especially in movies & comics), making this character a cloned female Wolverine isn't all that original. Hell, the only thing original is the fact that she has two claws instead of three.

Worked for Thor and Captain America, and the new Wolverin seems to be up there, haven't read it yet tho but I liked x-23 so I have high hopes for it.

+TheClashOfCultures Laura has been around since the X-men Evolution TV show back in 2000-2003 ish. Since then, she was added to the comics and really has been more a daughter to Logan than just his clone. She is her own character. Logan died long after Laura was introduced. It's a lot more of her taking up the mantle than just replacing.

Where is the confidence in calling a female equivalent of Logan/Wolverine "Wolverine"? They are trying hard to make her a "Flawed Wolverine" instead of her own thing and keep her as an original individual who SHOULD NOT need to be riding on the fame and popularity of others. Its money grabbing and nothing more, yet if you try to point this out to SJW's how this sort of thing from a writing perspective is wrong for character development and tell people they cannot argue because the only reason they are doing so is because they must be "Sexist" because no other argument could be valid and it must be an issue of "Male insecurity".

No one had a problem with that...
Female Thor didn't make sense on the surface level because he was born with the name Thor. You can't just take someone's birth name because you gain their power set and costume. But if you actually read the comic instead of just forming ignorant opinion you'd understand that while yes it's a gimmick to have her be the "current" Thor, it's just temporary and actually ads more depth to Odin-son Thor.

I love X-23, but I still don't get this marvel thing of changing names into mantles and titles. Wolverine was his name not a mantle, Thor is a name not a mantle. I think it's lame that they think these women aren't interesting enough to have their own comics without hijacking another character's identity.

Does that mean that his daughter should take on his name, no that's stupid. Johnny Cash is the symbol of an entire genre of music, should his daughter take up the mantle of Johnny Cash, no, that's stupid.
Thor is a name not a status, a boys name by the way. Captain is a title, Doctor is a title. Maybe they should make a male wonder woman so a man may pick up the mantle. X-23 was created in the X-Men Evolution animated series and got put into the comics later. She was created by Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost, who also worked on a lot of animated Marvel shows like Wolverine and the X-Men and Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Kyle and Yost also tried to create a Marvel animated universe but they ran into a lot of problems and Jeph Loeb ended up pretty much sinking it.
X-23 is kind of like Marvel's Harley Quinn. And coincidentally, the showrunner of X-Men Evolution, Boyd Kirkland, also did a lot of work on Batman: The Animated Series. He actually directed the Batman: TAS episode that introduced Harley Quinn.

I'm no expert about Wolverine, but isn't Wolverine just a free agent? No one sees him as an important symbol or representative, he's basically a mercenary. So why would X-23 *need* to take up his mantle? Why would *anyone* need to take up his mantle? Why can't it just be X-23 doing her own thing?
If she does indeed "feel liker her own character", why can't she actually *be* her own damn character?! Because so far, it just looks like they gave her a mans skin to pander to identity politicians and drum up controversy dollars... *even when lady Thor's tanking sales proves that this doesn't work!*
Not a fan of gender changing iconic characters. They have their personality traits, the gender is part of their identity, can we please just get new - original but badass female superheroes. Not a female thor, not a female wolverine.... All it does is show that they have no faith in themselves to come up with a few female superhero which will catch on. SO torn on "New Wolverine"... I miss old man Logan, but Laura's a cool character in her own right (I miss her being X-23 I guess and I'd rather the only Wolverine be Logan). The Bat-family resolves this sort of issue by having former sidekicks creating entirely new identities when the strike out on their own (Nightwing, Red Robin, etc.).
That said, maybe I should STFU about Marvel trying something new and let Logan have his proper hero's death, I know one of the things I hate lately about the DCU is them undoing Barry Allen's death.

They are ripping off the "Orphan Black" TV series! (Which I personally don't like anyway.) That whole imperfect clones that are dying out with a big evil corporation playing the heavy, is exactly the entire premise of the TV show, talk about lazy!

Fuck that, I'll just collect vintage Marve/Wolverine books that were good before Joe Quedubass decided to ruin the whole Marvel Universe. Marvel couldn't write a NEW and exciting modern age character with no relation to the older heroes to save their fucking lives. They've over saturated their own market so much, they've ruined continuity and beleivability of the 616 universe completely all at the same time ruining Spider-man and Wolverine, probably the greatest super heroes of all time aside from Superman and Batman just because they couldn't figure out a proper direction for the characters. As long as they have the MCU they could churn out crap cause some little kids will wan't to go to a comic book store after seeing a movie and have mommy or daddy buy an issue or two of their favorite hero or team not knowing how shitty current Marvel really is. Personally, I don't think Laura in this book is interesting. As far as the whole meta scene with Dr. Strange, what partly made all X-Men characters interesting was that unlike other superheroes they have powers that are both equally gifts just as they are curses. Cyclops struggles with controlling his optic blast , Jean grey struggles with controlling the Phoenix, rogue struggles with not being able to touch anyone, Nightcrawler struggles with his personal appearance, Wolverine struggled with controlling The beastly side of himself. so when you take away the struggle and conflict that comes with his powers it makes Laura a character with no intriguing issues. maybe I'm wrong. maybe she does have some personal problem I don't know about. I'm basing all of this on the video.

All I see is people making the same tired race, sex and clone swap complaints in comic books. It is practically a trope now in comics. A lot of popular characters have one and if Marvel or DC can sell another comic based on an existing character then why not? Some time these characters become their own over time and some are really interesting. If they are interesting enough, they can remove the main hero and replace them.
If the comic book sells than that is a good sign for the companies that sell comics books.
The real problem that needs to be talked about is the Metal Gear Solid story in Wolverine. X-23 aka Solid Wolverine would be a cooler name.
X-23 is cool. I wish all new all different marvel would have just named the book X-23. I feel like marvel is falling into this trend where they are rebranding established character names instead of making new characters and it feels like they are playing it safe. Having said that and being a wolverine fan. I am very pleased with old man logan. Now that i am an older man. i feel like this character has grown with me and this is a natural progression for marvels favorite canuckle head. Having been a reader that hasnt read in a while, old man logan brought me back to the comic shops

I just don't understand killing male characters off to push the female protagonist agenda. Why exactly do we need to kill off an already well known character with a rich back story just to push some "girls can do it too" agenda? In fact i'd say having her take the name "wolverine" and putting her into his suit extremely diminishes her as her own character and points to the fact that she needs to leech off of that persona to be any bit relevant. Shouldn't women want a character that is created with their own rich story and well versed unique persona for just them instead of just saying "hey lets copy paste wolverine onto a woman and call it "progression". Lazy story telling if you ask me.
Yeah Ima Fanboy and I dont like her in wolvies outfit, I like her as X-23, that costume doesn't even look good on her. I'm still not used to the idea of seen her as wolverineand I will never be.

As long as the characters are distinct from eachother and not just changed to soapbox about progressive 'issues' then I cant complain. Unlike something like say, Female Thor, there is a greater backstory to this comic, and a sense of individuality to the character.
So not only is this a rip-off of Wolverine, but A Certain Scientific Railgun with the weaker clone assassin versions of herself plotline.

Logan Wolverine didn't die last year. It was two years ago. It looks like they may keep him dead for 5 years like i think they should. Maybe 10 years. Maybe 20 years.
There was an awesome panel in Messiah War where the at-the-time X-Force meet up with Cable and Hope for the first time, having gone to find them in the future. There, Hope sees all the X-Force members as big and menacing, with Wolverine and Warpath and Vanisher, and then Laura looks at Hope and just takes off her mask. And Hope just see's that she's a little girl under there, and she just connects with them.
Awesome visual storytelling.
I've told you before, you should do the story of Hope Summers at one point. All the way from her triggering Cerebro until the prelude to Schism.

I read all 5 all new wolverine comics and I absolutely adored laura. Logan was my favorite x men and I was really upset when he died, but I'm so so happy with laura, she's amazing

This female wolverine story reminds me of a certain British show about a women who finds out about her clones, who are also being assassinated and who all are dying much faster due to them being clones except for the "perfect" clone which is the main character.
