Replacing the Bowl Seal on a Berkeley 12JC Jet Drive

  • This one is kind of a how-to video, although I definitely did a few things wrong along the way. I didn't find a really comprehensive guide for how to do this anywhere else, so hopefully this helps someone! If you're used to my DIY build videos, this is not going to be very interesting, as it's just 30 minutes of disassembly and reassembly of a single worn part.
    In the video I'm removing the transom housing and bowl from my 12JC Berkeley Jet Drive. I'm replacing the small seal that keeps the bowl oil in place and ensures the pump shaft is lubricated. On my boat it appears someone installed the seal backwards or used the wrong one, so there was no oil in the reservoir and there's a lot of wear and damage to my pump shaft.
    I don't have a replacement shaft and the specialty tools needed to re-seat the bushings are on back order, so I ignored the damage and just re-assembled everything. Next year I hope to do a more thorough job.

    A big thing when assembling anything like this is lubrication. Generally use something like Dawn dish soap on things you want to temporarily slide and you're not sure what they're made of. You can use dielectric grease (sold in many forms) on most kinds of rubber or metal and it will help keep water out. If you know a gasket is already exposed to an oil or grease you can just use that on it. It's amazing just how much stiction rubber seals can make without lubrication. Also if you don't want to replace that drive shaft you can caveman it and either weld it to fill in the voids (or have someone else do it) or use JB Weld on it. You can then start the motor and basically use an angle grinder with flap disk to remove the excess until you get close then file it. That way you'll get some approximation of circularity.

    You need bowl bushings. Also hi tech perf sells a sleeve kit for the end of that shaft. That shaft is toast. You were fighting the large o ring. Grease on the o ring and inside adapter housing helps.

    Funny you said don't drop the key . I did just that while replace the steering system on my boat. I knew it was in the boat but for the life of me I couldn't find it. Off the Menards again to buy 4 different size woodruff keys to get the right one.

    If you put the extension in from the inside of the socket it makes a better driver. Also H Freight sells a seal driver set super cheap. Works great

    Thanks for the vid. Gave me the push i needed to replace the head gaskets in my 77 imperial. Not a big job just been putting it off, after watching what you went through it was quick and easy...

    I don't know about you but to me it looks like, other than the silicone, a washroom mirror is supported to the wall better than that transom housing is to the boat lol

    You need to get you a cheap magnet tray. I got mine from harbor freight and its was a nice buy.

    One thing I always use when reusing gaskets and o-rings and seals besides silicone where necessary is Lanocoat look it up you'll love it it works good and it smells like sheep.

    the rebuild parts and your labor.

    I’m guessing here, but maybe that reverse cable has to be undone from the other end and then slide the cable out with everything else.

    On the shaft you could have used JB weld then sanded it down to the correct diameter , that tail shaft bears no weight it keeps it from flexing when your running and there could be a bearing on the end kinda like a throw out bearing to stabilizes the shaft on a tranny ! Rebuilding a jet drive is not a task for the faint of heart and the tail prop that’s dinged up is from small rocks .

      Now that's an idea... I wonder how long that would last? I've been looking at parts online and they're not cheap. It's also not an easy or fun job taking that lower unit off, and getting the new shaft in probably means taking the entire jet unit out of the boat. I feel like if I open it up again I should do it "right", but I know that could also take all summer...
