It's when a robot's skin is so icky, it resembles a corpse that freak's people out. 'Corpse's' moving around are not natural hence the revulsion. BTW, Hanson Robotics has greatly improved Sophia's skin. You may have met an earlier model

I think that the problem is that we recognize in our senses that despite the good mimicry, there is no one behind those eyes, expression, you may say we can perceive that there is no "soul" or an entity inhabiting the character, so the combination of seeming "real" with that emptiness is what creates that creepy sensation in my opinion..

@Mr Mawster but what if the robot is so humanlike, that you can’t distinguish it from a human?

@@savagee4641 As long as it is in the uncanny valley, it is creepy. If i can't distinguish it from real human, than it is not uncanny true, but it raises a different type of creepiness in me.

I'm in my 20s and still find Erica creepy, tbh.
The robot shown at 7:53, isn't really a great example of something that would easily elicit the uncanny valley effect, since it's still obviously nonhuman. The uncanny valley effect is more about things that look like they should be human, but just aren't.

It's justa theory I have. But people say that the eyes are the window to the soul. The uncanny valley can also happen when we see a dead body. I remember that I could not look at my grandma's body in her funeral. And I was not close enough to her to feel any kind of loss. So... if we look at robots or animations that look so close to humans and feel bad about them, could not be it because they don't have a soul?

Besides visual unnaturalness, perhaps another reason for negative reactions is distrust. The bot attempts to act human when we know it's not, therefore on some level we see it as a liar or lie. Since liars are unpredictable, they trigger alert, suspicion.

It also plays a big role on dating apps such as Tinder nowadays, where many women (maybe guys too, I dunno, I only see women when I swipe on tinder) make extensive use of editing their pictures with apps with filters or software like photoshop and gimp, to the point where they end up looking like some rather unnatural computergenerated graphics.

The "Uncanny Valley", as it is called, may be a matter of conditioning. IF younger generations are more accepting, it is because they are growing and developing mentally & emotionally ALONG WITH the idea of AI, and so are coming to accept the technological development as one more thing which is the natural course of things. And it is. Anything the human imagination comes up with IS. As to whether or not it is a prudent path is another matter, and actually will be about the emotional maturity of those developing the software. If Issac Asimovs robotic laws are used, or something LIKE them, to safeguard humanity, THAT will be a good idea. BUT, whether EVERYONE who manufactures AI will conform to using this or a similar safeguard is another consideration altogether. Pushing the envelope is what humans DO, & sometimes THAT is not intelligent.

The fact that Mr. Ishiguro said that it is all about education and experience was honestly rude. It felt like he is trying to justify his innovation by saying that if you find it creepy, you are not educated or experienced enough.

Take a different approach on why it's "not possible today". What if you could create a perfectly resembled human being? Imagine how much power and possibility this gives. If there are human like robots already, we just wouldn't know unless the government want us to know

Detroit become human taught us a lot about androids and they shouldn't have our jobs but in my oppinion should just be in our homes looking like Cara and Marcus do then the uncanny valley effect won't be a problem
