He's a pdfile full of vices, this is one of those secrets that everyone knows. Once he wrote a few good things, but being a entitled boomer certainly doesn't do him and George Martin any favors, just like Moorcock, who is another boomer who is envious and hates authors from previous generations. And the older he gets, the worse his writing has become, see his recent romance Holly. I say this as someone who has a few dozen of their books. No matter how hard Stephen King or others try, they will never be better men and better writers than the authors born decades before them.
King had some good ones but mf understood the value of cranking out volume in written work. If it's good enough to sell, you build a backlist of novels that keep selling just like any other investment portfolio.
You think it was his cocaine addiction or alcoholism would be the reason for his specter-like features but it was his brief tenure as a substitute teacher that brought it out.
Charls is absolutely right, The Stand is amazing. Everyone should watch the made for tv movie, the newer Amazon series and they should definitely read the book. It’s probably the best work King has and will ever do.

I remember reading some interview where he said a lot of the plot elements of his stories would have been very different if he’d toned down his alcohol and drug use earlier. He focuses a lot on heavy character dialogue and creating backstory just so he can play off all the completely batshit insane unfiltered stuff he writes while on meth or something, said drug use is a major reason why he physically looks like a skeleton and a major reason why people are left scratching their heads over writing choices like Carrie causing a meteor shower with her telekinesis, the virus in ‘The Stand’ making people say dumb shit before they die, the alien plot of ‘Dreamcatcher’ being a literal schizophrenic nightmare and the IT sewer scene, just to name a few.

You saw him as an elite writer by reputation, so you watched some crappy movies and that was the basis for your judgement of his talent as a writer? A writer is judged by their writing, dummy.
