Great video as always... I constantly look for Big Ern when I board...I sat next to a Captain on my flight home from Phoenix- asked if he knew Big Ern--lol -- he had his iPad and showed me the entire trip home from the pilots view...one of the best flights I've ever had!! I love SWA and their crew!
Really appreciated seeing the ETOPS routes and the ETP charted from the dispatcher. Cool stuff for a college student studying aeronautical science to see it all in action! Keep making the awesome videos!
I just did an OGG trip that was assigned the Andaz. Two weeks before the trip they switched to another hotel! I was so disappointed but still a wonderful time was had! Thanks for your videos!
Awesome post Ern. Next time you are in Honolulu on a Sunday, go to Orchids Brunch at the Halekulani Hotel. You will not need to eat for a week! I noticed you were in Maui on the 31st. Darn, I was over on Oahu hoping to film you some day arriving or departing during my annual winter visit. Darn. Maybe next year. Cheers from CYYB!
Nice to take a look at the ETOPS route to Hawaii. I missed out on the Max, and Hawaii, but got to retire before Covid. The early days of Hawaii looked like more work than fun.
Love watching you in the 737. I instruct (mostly entertainment) in 737 SIM. Was wondering why on the ETOPS route back if something goes wrong past the "return point", why SFO is the destination instead of lets say LAX which seems a lot closer on your route. Maybe better maintenance there? But if the problem was bad enough, would you probably change that to LAX or even SAN which at least look closer on the iPad. Thanks and keep up the good work...
Earnie going to Hawaii again...one lucky newly promoted Captain! Don't forget that it was a MAX...never mind, should have commented after watching the whole video.
Surprised HI flights are not grabbed by senior captains since it is a lot of flight hours in one shot. I figured PHX - LAS/LAX/SAN/SNA would be for new captains.
Aloha! I live in Oahu. I love all your videos. You have great positive energy. Question? What do you use to get the signals for your iPad and Foreflight when flying the 737? I use my Stratus 3.
Very immersive as usual. If i understand correct, flight inbound Hawai required a specific route due /partly due to SpaceX launch in Vanderberg. WoW. It's like a Sci-fi movie😋
I was hoping to see you earlier this week when I flew on Southwest to/from Phoenix, but I didn’t see you. Some other time maybe. There’s a gate agent in Phoenix named Scott. Before we boarded our flight from PHX to DEN, Scott sang Rocky Mountain High Colorado by John Denver over the PA system. Scott is an awesome singer!
That hotel has both the detachable nozzle and the rainshower overheads. Awesome! And the WN 737s sure beat the other airline's 717s for comfort inter-island.
It was great seeing you on another flight and I wish I was a passenger on your flight noting I would be in good hands in the air. Southwest is be coming my favorite airlines, thanks to you a great pilot doing a great job. Keep it up
Big Ern.....Flew that back and forth on United when I had shore duty in the Navy and if I remember correct we made the HNL to LAX Block to Block in just over 3 hrs. one time........ it was those new 747's back in '72 this was a turn around run from Chicago and back... just a handful of people on the return and the landing was to the East ( not sure if they did that just for this flight 🤔) ........and we rolled right to the gate..... 10 years later I met the Capt. of this flight at our Flight school one Saturday.😁 small world.
Just asking a question. I noticed you were wearing a cool lanyard in your video today. " I stand by Southwest". I've checked the Shop Southwest store, but not seeing it. Any ideas where I could get one? Thanks and love your videos!
After flying the 737 for 7 years I can say it is hard to even think about going back after being in the airbus. Comfort on long flights is nice! We can fit 2 jumpseaters and all their bags up front which is nice, so no one gets left behind. However as a commuter you do what you got to do! If you’re on the second jumpseat of the 737 you hope your captain is not a spooner!
My husband is captain for one of the majors. He said that the fourth jump seat on the 737 is the most comfortable seat on the airplane if it gets you home.
As a result of this video, Erin, I'd to see a video of what do pilots do during long flights, because I notice that they don't look out the windows as much. Why?
Not a pilot wondering if they route where they know the ships are in case the worst happens and you go down someone is nearby to help. Seems like otherwise it would all be based on which way is the least expensive for everyone to get there.
In the initial days of flying passengers over the ocean there were US Navy ships patrolling specific areas and aircraft would follow a route that put them near these ships. The aircraft would check in with each ship along the way. This helped speed up search and rescue if a flight failed to check in somewhere. This was needed because piston engines were very unreliable. There was an incident with a PanAm flight from Hawaii to the mainland where 3 of the 4 engines failed near the midpoint of the route at night. They circled directly above a Navy ship for several hours waiting for sunrise and then the ship released some foam so the pilots had something to aim for to ditch near the ship. Nobody was injured. I think it was Navy, might have been Coast Guard. Since jet engines became so reliable there is no need for ship based rescue plans in civilian aviation.
31.8FOB to Vegas?? The Max fuel burn has to be phenomenal + Maui's main runway isn't the longest. Was your TOD fuel around 8K, I'm guessing? Great content, Ern.
“73 is not like an Airbus, where you guys have a couch” -one of the best Ernie quotes ever😂
And a dining room table!
Truth! But I like my couch and dining room table 😆
I would like to see that.

Gotta see a picture of 4 pilots in a cockpit of a 737. That’s gotta be tight!
Love it! Imagine if you boarded a Southwest and you happened to see Big Ern up front in the flight deck getting prepared for departure.
I look each time I board a SW plane!
You're a great ambassador for SW airlines!
Livin' the life Ern. Got your fourth stripe, flying to Hawaii and staying at the Andaz Maui.
C5=freedom bird. Always will be #1 in my heart. Great episode Ernie.
I agree wholeheartedly.
Excellent work and props to you for taking the time out of your day to present this wonderful content!
Thank you!!
Big Ern's in the left seat Yee--uh!😊

I just did an OGG trip that was assigned the Andaz. Two weeks before the trip they switched to another hotel! I was so disappointed but still a wonderful time was had! Thanks for your videos!
Wow, C-5's ? Grew up in Dover, De seeing the C-5 A's and B's. Love the old engine sounds!
Great Maui is where I became a chef at the Hyatt Regency 1981. I started Sansai Sushi seafood restaurant with DK Kodama. Great tour thank you 🙏
Always positive, great energy, most of all happy and enjoying the job , love it
Thank you for watching!
Andaz by Hyatt is just great... Congratulations you seem so much more comfortable as a captain now .
Love the awesome information you provide in detail. You are always positive, and make this industry great!
737 is not like a airbus where they have a couch lol love it great video blue skies
Love the behind the scenes of the pilot life! Great stuff Ern.
Thanks for showing all this ETOPS information, it’s fun to learn about it!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Yeah, we really have almost a sofa on the Airbus, nice video my friend!!!
Jealous! HaHa
Thank you very for sharing your trip. I love your flight and Maui information. We were there last year and loved it. Going back soon
Nice to take a look at the ETOPS route to Hawaii. I missed out on the Max, and Hawaii, but got to retire before Covid. The early days of Hawaii looked like more work than fun.
It's a blast!
Thanks Captain!! Always look forward to your videos. Hope to see you in Tampa sometime
Man, the editing in this video is So good! I hope to be in your shoes one day, about halfway through my PPL at the moment!
You can do it! Thank you for watching Bryan!
Wish you had a cockpit cam for departures and arrivals
Loving the B-roll footage in this vlog. Really appreciate all the edits you do to keep us entertained, Ernie. Thanks for sharing! Cheers!
❤
..as an early subscriber..thanks again..Capt. Ern..and please keep em coming ..
I appreciate your support from day 1!
Thanks for the video Big Ern. My family and I stayed at the Andaz Maui in November. Nice place and they have a great gym. It's also beach front.
I love a good hotel gym, not gonna lie...
Happy to see you in the left seat. Hawaii is so beautiful. A great layover
Love watching you in the 737. I instruct (mostly entertainment) in 737 SIM. Can’t wait to see how this turns out
Good for you man!
Cheers from Canada
Awsome video I live in Phx as well hoping to become a pilot for SWA
Surprised HI flights are not grabbed by senior captains since it is a lot of flight hours in one shot. I figured PHX - LAS/LAX/SAN/SNA would be for new captains.

Our son's best friend is the concierge at the Andaz. We enjoy staying in Wailea..... Aloha Nui🌴
Awesome hotel!!
Very immersive as usual. If i understand correct, flight inbound Hawai required a specific route due /partly due to SpaceX launch in Vanderberg. WoW. It's like a Sci-fi movie😋
Love the video Big Ern. Those captain stripes look great on you.

"Back in my day in the C-5, we used of have to hand plot them on a paper chart."
GUILTY! ✋
Nice lanyard!!

My wife and I are flying to Hawaii in July...cant wait
Awesome. I went there a long time ago. I hope I can get back sometime.

yeah Big Ern! i live Maui and love every bit of it🤙🏽
Thanks for the great video. No hearing protection or high vis vest on the walk around Ern? Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
Just asking a question. I noticed you were wearing a cool lanyard in your video today. " I stand by Southwest".
I've checked the Shop Southwest store, but not seeing it. Any ideas where I could get one?
Thanks and love your videos!
Thanks captain...always enjoyable videos!
Maybe I will see you one day!! I fly to long Beach 🏖 alot going to Mexico 🇲🇽 alot!! Anyway have fun!! God bless!!
Does SWA ETOPS aircraft have HF radio for the over-water routes? Or is the ATC done by satellite?
Do you guys get some kind of crew meals on a flight to Hawaii
Great video. I like the hotel where they put you. What’s the name of it and how far from OGG airport?

@@karenblaine7266 matter of perspective! If it gets me home I’d ride in the lav
@@armyavi8tor Like my husband said, if it gets you home, it’s the most comfortable seat there is. And yes, the lab would do as well.
Ern, I love seeing you in the left seat.
If it's over 6 hrs flight time, do you need to switch pilot?
During the walk around of the second flight, the beacon and strobe lights were on. Why is that?
As a result of this video, Erin, I'd to see a video of what do pilots do during long flights, because I notice that they don't look out the windows as much. Why?
Another great video! Good times 😊
Love your videos! Maybe one day we’ll meet! Love flying SW!
Cool vid! Love the content! Do u think u could show the cockpit during cruise, just for fun?
Great video, Big E! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching
Are there weight restrictions on routes like that?
great trip as always!!!!
Lmk when you go to Portland OR trip book I have mile reawards southwest
With that much "gas" on board any extra concerns about climbing out if you lost an engine? Thanks for the excellent videos!
Currently in Pilot training love the videos man!!
Awesome. Hope to see you in the right seat here soon!
Sweet looking hotel and meal!! That shower was pretty neat lol. So happy for you that you’re getting to Hawai’i a time or two lately 😎
Nice the MAX!
It's awesome!
@@FlyingwithBigErn Brand new too! Thanks for doing this! as somebody said, you are super positive, which is refreshing!
I miss seeing the rocket launches at Vandyland. That was the only thing of interest at that base.
Whats your flying background..? do you have any videos just on how you became. a pilot and career and how you chose SWA..?
If possible, could you show us your preflight flows?
Does 737-800 have the range to do Hawaii to Vegas?
How’s the competition between SWA and Hawaiian? I’d still take Hawaiian on the Inter Island for the absence.
The greatest pilots of all time!!!!
Always enjoy your content Big ERNIE 👍🏻
The A220 also requires a 3 min cooldown after landing.
C-5, 2 maybe 3 Tankers??? Just asking
You flew the C5?????? That thing could literally fit a 737 inside and fly it to Hawaii in the cargo bay. Woof.
What is the fuel capacity of the max 8
wish you could show some of the flying it would be more entertaining than just briefs and debriefs
That's not allowed per company rules currently
Good video, always enjoy them , thank you ✈️
Thank you for watching!
Could you brief the approach plates for us instrument students lol?
is that a 737 max 8 or 9
Do you ever fly east towards Nashville or tampa
LIVING THE DREAM MAN!!!
Grateful everyday!

Can you make what's in my pilot backpack and luggage works?
Why do you go to SFO if you have an emergency after the ETP and not LA or San Diego….Is SFO closer?
SFO is indeed closer the way northern California juts out to the west.
C5...good grief Ernie. Once a servicemember always a servicemember
I live in vandenberg Its nice
Hello from 🇨🇦
Greetings from AthensGreece!
Last time I was here, Ern was sitting in the other seat.🎉
