    You do nice work on old tools. I learn a lot watching your videos. I have a lot of old tools. I still use them. Show us how Scout Craftier uses all of these fantastically restored tools! They are no doubt beautiful when you are done. Maybe too nice for some. A museum exhibit is where your restored tools will end up someday if you are lucky. Saving all of that for posterity is a noble thankless cause. I for one encourage more of your videos. I haven't had time to watch the others but I made time for yours

    Great video! Citric acid works a little faster than white vinegar. You can buy it online pretty cheap. I just add a few ounces of it per liter of water. Also, if you do get oil on your files, you can clean them off with acetone or use chalk or soapstone to absorb the oil.

    That is one of the best videos I’ve seen of yours. Thank you. I was especially interested in how you restored the wood handle. The result was amazing. I have a 1960’s wood handle Snap-On screwdriver that I’ve been wanting to restore but didn’t know how to. I don’t want to use sandpaper as the branding is very lightly marked on the wood. Can you tell me, please, what that stuff you deployed to clean the wood before you mounted it on the lathe?
    I’m going to be searching through all your old videos now looking for more tips on restoration.
    Thank you again. Love seeing these tools restored so well. You must have quite the collection by now.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Frank! The problem we always face with screwdrivers is trying to save the logo! I have had that dilemma for years! You have to make the choice... Saving the name many times means limiting the restoration. You can use many things to try to remove the grease, dirt and grime from the handle... Probably the safest is Mineral sprits and steel wool... From there you can access how far you want to go... I know it's a tough call but rest assured that whatever you do will be an improvement over a dirty wood handle! Thanks!!!!!!!!

    I'm the same I can't pass up a good file if I find it for the equivalent of a buck a piece =) I hope your video inspires more people to pick up old files when they see them and get them back into usable shape. I particularly liked that you also gave the handle some love! I see cleaned up files for sale over here all the time with the handles still filthy, or they just crudely sanded off the worst of the gunk with some 80 grit and left it at that =(

    Very interesting. I've refurbished some old wooden handled tools, including some files, myself this week and they've come out really nice. Especially the handles! I just need to add a splash of red (my favourite & signature colour) to them and I'm gonna post a video of the transformation in the next day or soon.
    Thanks for posting.
    Feel free to check out my efforts.

      @ScoutCrafter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Jusb! You're right! When did files get so expensive? They are certainly very easy to make and I can't understand how they can get so much $$$ for such a simple tool!? =) Thanks

    • @OldSneelock

      Economy of scale. When every shop used files to finish parts or fit them, the file making machines ran nonstop. CNC mills and lathes with ceramic inserts don't leave burrs. I use to buy 20 or more boxes of files at a time for the tool room. I still use them, but I use a Dremel more often.

    great information about wd-40 i wasnt sure to use it or not but i though i use it then file wood and brush off, lol this funny video today because i went throw stuff i got at yardsale got about big 17 old files need to start making handles for them. Vinger not only remove rust it *sharpens* the blade or atleast that what they say also good when ur done to use baking soda to neutralize the vinger

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi David! YES! I forgot to mention the Baking soda! Always afterwards to neutralize the acid! I really like the BIG files! They aren't cheap but if you get them at a yard sale you got lucky!!! Great stuff! Thanks!!!!!!!

      yea i come accross ever so often no one buy files around here (yet) i need to figure out how to make my desktop drill press to make handles out ock doles. i know you can take handle off one andput on another but i like to have them handle i was lucky most files i get have no rust if so it long gone and black so cleaning up with a brass brush and a peice of copper makes it like new.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! I too like all my files to have their own handles... Lots of times I use them without handles... I do like the Handy Files that have a forged handle! I wish all files were like that! Thanks!

    • @OldSneelock
      @OldSneelock 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davidhoward2237 Drill presses do a nice job of turning. Grind a point on a bolt and put it in the center hole of the table. Cut off a screw head and clamp it in the chuck, or make a mandel like ScoutCrafter did. . Spin the stock onto the screw until it hits the chuck jaws. Raise the table until the pointed bolt pinches the stock. Now you are all set to sand.
      Rig a tool rest from a c clamp on the table and you can turn your own handles.

    Why didn't files come with a handle for each? I never understood a file with just a tang. They look like they have not had much use once the rust was off them and cleaned up. You must use gallons of vinegar. You got your money's worth with these.
