Very competent musicianship from one of jazz's unsung heroes. Land is not a spectacular player by any stretch of the imagination but has the uncanny ability to leave the listener feeling nourished by having heard him play. And, of course, he holds the distinction of having played on Monk's best ever recording of Round Midnight at the Blackhawk.

....and his solo on "Round Midnight is, I would say, inspired! By "spectacular," do you mean ostentatious or showy? Yes, nourished, as having had a fairly deep aesthetic experience.

LaFaro wasn't just a soloist-virtuous-interactive player as we would hear several years later after he'd met up with Bill. He was also a first-rate walker, whose sound is capturing with stunning realism by Roy Dunan for Contemporary Records. He's at the top of my list of all-time best bass players. And for the a couple of decades that he was with Clifford and then with Counce and Hutchinson, Harold Land, was technically and expressively, the most musical tenor player you could hope to hear. Beginning in the early '80s the breath support that was behind those beautifully contoured, dynamically melodic lines, began to fail. This is quintessential Land and unbeatable modern tenor.

In Harold's 4th or 5th chorus, the beat gets turned around. I can hear Elmo trying to feel it and he is not lined up with Lennie (who is hitting cues to try and get it settled again)

Greg Waits - Wrong, the beat never gets turned around. Elmo is being adventurous in his comping in a couple of spots but he always knew where he was. You have to listen more carefully again and count. Cheers!
