    "Bottle in a bottle" honestly looks like a way to sell a tiny amount of product in a way that looks like you're getting more. A lot of them are still plastic bottles, but slightly smaller. You just have a cuter carry case for them as well.

      Thats why you always read the fluid ounces or the amount that you're getting. The bottle is always way way bigger than the "inner" refillable part

      Honestly, unless I want the packaging for some reason (the soap dispensers are useful and more practical when I'm showering, they don't spill and it's easier to "dose" the amount of soap), I just go with the refil.
      With some things like paint I can just put the refil in a different container. I see plenty of paint palette containers online all the time which are cuter and cheaper.

      You could also just reuse another container and put the refill in like I have a ceramic hand soap dispenser and I put the soap rhat I like most into the bottle

    • @gabrielabatista6016
      @gabrielabatista6016 หลายเดือนก่อน +52

      @@AxelXionSora here we do that too, but more often than not is just reusing old packages that are good quality until they break. You know, reduce, reuse, recycle.
      One of my soap dispensers lasted for 2 years one, unfortunately the white plastic of the lid started to crack and slowly fall apart.
      Sometimes we also use the packages of my mom's moisturizer (she loves moisturizers so she gets a lot of them), they're surprisingly sturdy!

    idk if I'd even classify "bottle in a bottle" as recycling, considering you basically just buy two bottles and then another one for the "refill" instead of one bottle per product. I think the best is simply to make products with compostable packaging, so you don't have to worry as much about how much material the refill uses up.

    • @AbbeyMarieEsp
      @AbbeyMarieEsp หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      The problem with compostable packaging is that you have to actually compost it. Which only happens in specific circumstances. If you just throw away compostable packaging, it's sitting around with the other garbage; it's not melting away to nothing.
      I consider most "compostable" marketing as greenwashing, frankly.

    I wish more companies did any kind of refil. I have no idea what to do with my empty Clinique moisturiser containers and they are so ridiculously big and bulky for the amount of product that came in them. I decanted some into a travel container once and I ended up just using that and refilling it as I could at least put it in my handbag too. Even the little tubes from Clinique aren’t recycled locally to me and I have no idea what to do with them so they don’t end up in landfill.

    That last one- OneSkin, the packaging is awful. The pumps break all the time, and you need to end up purchasing new ones because they’re so bad- and this was after they so-called “fixed” the problem with them. Also, you can’t ever get out all of the cream. I’d always have to end up cutting it open when it still had a few weeks worth of cream left, just to be able to get it out. I eventually stopped using it because it was so ridiculous.. and not to mention *very* expensive.. 120$ a bottle. If they made the outer part, the shell, and the pump more durable (and nicer to look at) I’d consider using them again.

And hygiene also continues to be a concern...however I'm hopefully refill stations become more accessible and affordable 🙌

    • @sockpuppetqueen
      @sockpuppetqueen หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Even the refill stations have SOME waste, as the product needs to be shipped to the store in something. It's certainly reduced waste compared to the packaging needed to sell individual consumer-sized products, but the difference between a refill pouch and a refill station is essentially just a matter of scale, it's not a fundamental difference in kind. The refill station reduces waste even more than the refill pouch, but neither is ZERO waste.
      And many, many people don't live near stores that offer bulk refills of stuff. I live in a farm town, I'd have to drive almost an hour to get to the nearest zero waste store. And I'm lucky that my nearest one is even that close. It's just not happening for me, realistically. The refill pouches are better than my next most available option, which is regular product packaging.

      They just aren't convenient. The packaging is made from very soft plastic, isn't made to stand up, doesn't have a dosage, you can't see the color or the name, doesn't have a lid, have a system so you can't close once you opened, make a mess when using by itself.
      I have a moisturizer that the refill is made from hard plastic, but the bottom is purposely tilted, so it doesn't stay up, and you need to cut the lid to get to the moisturizer

    I have never seen refills for beauty products in my country (germany) usually it's a new packaging alltogether every time 😮 the only pouch refill i know of is handsoap in 500ml or 750ml. Even quick google search only showed me 3 brands that offer these type of products which is very interesting.

      there is DEFINITELY refill options for hair shampoo at DM, it has the same packaging as the hand soap. also at some shops you can by shampoo, conditioner, soap, dishwashing liquid, detergent (for clothes) in bulk and fill it into your own containers. you also have the option to by solid soaps, which use only paper packaging and last quite a long time. there are also razors sold at dm where you only change the razor metal bit so you dont need to buy new platsic packaged razor refills EVER AGAIN. the skincare examples she showed are super high-end with fancy packaging I am sure you can find stuff like that at sephora? but the drogerie skincare we have already comes in minimal packaging like the refills she showed so what would you be refilling?

    I have long been skeptical of the "bottle in a bottle" refill system, thanks for confirming it doesn't actually help very much unless you're habitually reourchasing that product. How does the component material factor in? For example, the Glow Recipe outer bottle is glass, which is highly recyclable with little to no loss in quality/purity. Whereas the inner package that the consumer is reourchasing, the "refill" part, is plastic, which significantly reduces in quality each time it is recycled. I would almost think we would be better off, environmentally, if consumers simply recycled or reused the glass containers rather than purchasing new plastic "refill" pods.

    Bottle in a bottle doesn’t sound like a refill to me. If my phone break, i take it out of its protective case and put a new phone in that case im not getting a phone refill. 😂

    • @AKbaby89
      @AKbaby89 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What? Why are you comparing moisturizer to a phone?
      The bottle in a bottle is a refill, since they are made to be inserted into a permanent package. The glow recipe refill for example, is in a plastic tub and it has a foil top. So if you don't put the refill into the permanent packaging, you won't have a top. You cannot use the refill without the permanent packaging, so your phone comparison just doesn't work, at all.

    • @CosmindArt

      @@AKbaby89 the Grey bottles she showed at the start legit looked like the outside packaging you put the refill in was literally just a pretty outter shell you could easily go without by only buying the "refill", that's why.

    But considering soft plastics aren’t recyclable in most places but the harder plastics can be up to three times before it’s trash, I’m not sure this is the way either. I’d die for a store to open that allows you to bring back the same bottle to use over and over. Reduce and reuse should always come before recycle as we only recycle plastics up to three times unlike infinitely recyclable glass and metals.

    I feel that it is actually more wasteful if you still have to buy new containers......that go in containers. Suprise. More waste. The only way to make it less wasteful would be to use very old makeup techniques such as how face powder used to be pressed into your own personal compact and when the powder was completely used up, you'd just get it re-pressed into the same compact. Now that is reducing waste.

      Good question! It's tough to say for sure...however pouches are generally considered less commonly recyclable.
