I love Canada, been here since i was 10,55yrs. I had a comfortable childhood and a very good adulthood.i got my my university education, trained as a registered nurse, bought 2 homes, raised my children.Life has been good, retired now,and very appreciative of my dad's decision to bring his family here.
As a Caribbean-born individual, I can attest that the cultural dynamics are vastly different from those in Canada. What may be considered direct or blunt communication in Canada is simply the norm, and having a flexible personality and ability to adapt quickly will serve you well.
Some of what you are saying is surprising to me...a Canadian. Any place I worked where there was public interaction, you had to cover tattoos, have limited piercings and even conservative hair colour. Maybe things are changing?? High school and university - I never referred to my instructors by their first name. Now when I returned to school some years later I must admit that has changed. Instructors introduced themselves by first name and using their first name was the norm.
It would seem that you've lost a lot, sacrificed a lot, to move to Canada. My Father in law only felt like he was Canadian at the age of 82, and he'd moved there at age 12.
The dress code in the workplace was it for me....wearing shorts and tank top in the classroom as a teacher lol.....not allowed in JA. The scamming ting though....OMG too much. Yes please.....part 2.
