Jess Stories, I agree that Patti Lupone is a strong vocalist however, I feel Elaine Paige was firstly, a lot more accurate with the notes, has a voice which suits the music perfectly, has the perfect balance of emotion and vocal performance and to me had an overall better performance. I am British so have grown up listening to the West End’s first Eva Peron, Elaine Paige. This is probably partly to blame for my opinion, however, I’m not really a fan of Patti Lupone as I don’t think she can sing as well as she believes she can. Tbh, It’s all about opinions as different people prefer different approaches to a role. I believe my opinion has a rather valid back up of facts and knowledge, as does yours, I expect.
I really love how Elaine Paige slowed it down. She is a super articulate singer anyway, and it's nice being able to really hear what the lyrics are, as well as seeing the tactics she uses as Eva.
3rd: Ellaine Paige-I admire how she slammed down on those notes while the tempo slowed down, but she sounds more interested in her voice than her character 2nd: Madonna-Never had I heard her sing like this before. You recognize her voice but she sounds natural and not like other actors in movie versions of musicals and the key was lowered to possibly help her voice range. No wonder this one was a success 1st: LuPone/Espinosa-Both are amazing in their delivery of the melody. You don't see an actor, you see and feel Eva Peron’s personality as a whole! And the belts are just...🤗
Black Manta She still has a powerful voice! I saw her in War Paint in the fall, and she still rules the stage, even next to someone like Christine Ebersole.
John Doe being a wagnerian definitely doesnt mean that your an operatic singer..........I understand that the vocal fachs were first created to classify opera singers but it can also be used as classification of voices outside of opera.
This song is fucking hard, most of them sound annoying (maybe cuz the phrasing is so over the top it'd be annoying reguardless). Patti wins for sure, just cuz she can do it and make it sound good (she kinda slurs the words tho). Madonna changed it which was smart.
1.)Patti (duh) 2.)Caroline Bowman 3.)Loni Ackerman Honorable mention: Elaine Paige (I much prefer the way the other ladies deliver the 3rd line but Elaine’s is very creative and it surprisingly doesn’t make me mad she doesn’t go to the G on the last one)
LuPone, hands down! In her biography she described the terror she felt when doing this role. That's certainly understandable given the fact that the score requires the singer to basically "scream" at the top of the range, over and over again. It's brutal.
It REALLY annoys me when sopranos try this, it comes out really screamy instead of full and impactful like was intended, it really takes a mezzo. tbh I didn't even really mind when Maddona changed the key, still better than whatever the second one was.
It has to do less with whether the singer is a soprano or a mezzo, but more to do with her technique. Patti (and like two others here) can sing it completely in their chest voice. The rest (and most human people) move into their mix range, which is more nasal in its placement. THAT'S why it sounds "screechy and screamy".
avitalyk Patti and the other two are not singing fully in chest voice, they just have a very strong mix that’s slightly chest heavy. That is not in full belt.
Yes Madonna sounded richer and more mezzo while the others including Ms Patty lupone sounds shrill. That's the difference between Madonna and Patty. Madonna sounded lyrical and beautiful and vulnerable and her diction was the most impressive feat. And she made the songs sound pop the only way Madonna can do. She is by far the only Eva peron for me
I actually don’t mind that Madonna lowered the key for the film version. It makes sense in the context of the scene. Evita is giving a speech to convince the people why they should support Perón, so it would be weird for her to practically scream at them during her speech. The way Madonna sings it sounds convincing. The change is appropriate for the film, but I definitely prefer the high notes in the stage version. Some things just don’t translate well on film.
Same with Lament. In the play Evita sings in opera notes composition, something that would result weird in a real context, so Madonna did it weak and breathless in the movie, perfect for the scene and emotion inducing.
Madonna did it weak and breathless because she has a weak and breathless pop voice. Eva Peron was a strong woman even at her weakest. There was no call for the absolutely dreadful interpretation by Madonna and/or Parker. Ugh, I HATED that film.
@@AlexeBriand2002 do you really think i don't know the story? 😄No, Madonna did it because she has a weak voice with very little range. She can't act either, so doing it weak was her ONLY choice Lmao

Jacob L. Perry Jr. the production in question was fully licensed! stagedoor manor is a theater camp, and they do not hire full pit bands for the 7 or 8 musicals they put on each session, totaling around 24 musicals in a 9 week time frame
This song definitely only sounds good when the person singing can act as well, patti, Elaine and Eden acted as they sang with variety so that you can hear the shouty desperation they had in their voices mixed in with their talented voices, Evita NEEDED Peron to stay in power so that she does too, yes some people have a good voice but it doesn’t work if you don’t put in the emotion that really gives the song its beauty...

Patti is unmatched in vocal power and projection, but I also like Madonna, her voice is not powerful, but the interpretation is great, and her projection is crystal clear, maybe also because her version is a bit lower tonality-wise. Caroline Bowman is also not bad, her pitch is good. The others are a bit hard to listen to...
That's a strange way to phrase that. Sure, sopranos sing that note all the time, but it's not a special note for them. When you say soprano Es, I think of E6s, like Christine's note in Phantom of the Opera. Plus, it's not a soprano anything if it's belted, which this very much is/has to be. I would call this a belter E, personally, since, for many belters, this E is one of their highest notes.
Strangely enough, the ones who belted it out the best like Patti were also the ones that were harder to understand the lyrics. I can't believe I'm thinking this, but I kind of liked Madonna's because it was much easier to understand the lyrics even if the singing wasn't as spectacular. But then controlling sound in a movie is much easier than in a live theatre performance.
Regardless of the singer, lyrics are harder to enunciate the higher the notes are. It's because proper resonance at that frequency requires a more open mouth shape.
From what I understand, Sir Andrew told Madonna she could have the part only if she actually learned how to sing. He wasn't going to have her butcher his award-winning score with her "Borderline" twangy bravado. So she took it to heart, and really developed a nice vocal range. It's evident in her two post-Evita albums..."Bedtime Stories" and "Ray of Light". Cheers!
And we’re always projecting. Placement is key & enunciation is next. Most of them tried enunciating the lyrics word for word each with different vowels which lead them to sound like they’re struggling.
What's the general Argentinian response to Evita? I feel like here in the US it's our main cultural reference to the Peróns but I have no idea how accurate it actually is.
@@thevampirefrog06 you mean the musical? it really depends, we have mixed feelings about everything around here lmao. On one hand we are argentinians, we love attention and seeing ourselves portrayed out there. We especially enjoy "Don't cry for me Argentina" since it's the most accurate depiction of what Evita was for the poor and what she felt for them. But on the other hand, some people here venerate her like a goddess, since she did so much for the working class, and they complain about the "dramatization" of her figure or other inaccuracies (such as the presence of Che Guevara, who wasn't even in Argentina at this point). We are pretty arrogant and passionate about politics, so for some of us it's kind of "disrespectful" to make a musical out of such an important figure when you aren't from here and don't understand our people and what Evita means for the masses. I just personally take it for what it is: a Broadway musical (that needs to appeal, and therefore it will probably be inaccurate, and that's okay) based on Evita's life :)

Mister Golightly another awesome video. I'm not a huge Elaine Paige fan but I really like the way she sounds here. I saw Ms. Lupone in this pre-Broadway in San Francisco and she simply towered onstage.
Patti owned the stage no question; effortless, a powerhouse...Madonna had the screen; strong but emotive, in the moment; and no need for near screaming...
@@anaihilator If every music director adjusted the key the way they did for Madonna, anyone with a halfway decent voice could hit it. The problem is there are so few mezzos with a full enough voice once they get that high who don't sound like they're screaming.
Yeah! I’d really love to hear her to sing this part! It could probably be kinda weird for her since she only really dates women(I don’t want to get her sexuality wrong, please correct me if I’m wrong)
Jess Stories, Lady Gaga is bisexual so dates both men and women. She is a very established actress and can probably put her sexuality behind her in a role. I think it’s rather rude to assume her sexuality would affect the way she acts. But I do agree she’d be incredible as Eva Peron.
Haha agreed! Albeit the lowering of key would be required because her voice can't belt THIS high healthily.....she would slay these belts with that slightly raspy and smoky rock influenced tone of hers.
OK, the only one who managed to pull the stage version's insanely high notes in a natural way that felt fierce yet still pleasant to the ear was Patti. No competition here. Every single one of the others sounded like a cat screeching in agony as its testicles get crunched. Jesus Christ! It's actually kinda horrifying. I much prefer Madonna's film version, which is lower and comes across, ya know, as a polititian giving a passionate speech trying to reach out to you, not harass your eardrums and bleed you dry through the ears. Madonna's vocal and acting performances were phenomenal as well as fitting the more contained setting of film.
Generally when the question starts with "Who sang it best..?" my answer is going to be "Patti LuPone," in almost any situation. But also, Elaine Paige! Dear lord, Elaine Page!
That second one was rough, the production just looked bad overall, the props and set and everything we're not nearly as impressive and she genuinely concerned me, I thought she was dying
Patti LuPone both has the low tone and powerful belt to sound commanding and strong, while having the insane range of pulling off those high notes. Her acting is phenomenal, and she’s simply an insanely powerful presence on stage.
Okay I'm not a big fan of this song bc it's so high and screechy- but that's how it's supposed to be- madonna and Louise dearman lowered it quite a bit. Patti was definitely the best
Louise Dearman sings the first four bars down an octave ("he supports you, understands you ... is one of you") but the rest is up the octave and in the key of the score. I believe the only one in a different key is obviously Madonna.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I liked Madonna's the best. Even though the key was changed so she could hit the notes, that was the one where I understood the lyrics and I felt like "Evita" was the most convincing in her arguments to the people.
Patti LuPone is the best vocally but I have soft spot for Madonna as my favorite Evita since I grew up with the movie and soundtrack. Overall, as someone who’s father was Argentine from a very mixed family, Evita is so special to me and so underrated. It’s my second favorite after Phantom!
I actually saw Elena perform the role and even though Patti is the one true Evita, Elena does SOMETHING with those notes and that role I will always adore.
I liked Madonna’s version because I could understand the words. Patti Lupone embodies the charisma and that “something extra” that made Evita so beloved in Argentina. They still worship her in Buenos Aires. Her picture is everywhere.
YES , the movie is 99%a true story , Madonna done very well , as you told , could understand the words , I think Tim Rice did a hard work writing it, i say this as argentinian
Some impressive moments here and there, some interesting choices, but Patti is The Queen and the others are Ladies-In-Waiting. I was 16 when I saw this on Broadway . I went because my summer camp friend, Jane Ohringer, was cast as Peron's Mistress ("Another Suitcase In Another Hall"), but I had no idea what I was in for. The Harold Prince staging was new and exciting, and nothing could have prepared me for the force, the beauty, the glory of Patti's dramatic and vocal prowess. I have been a devoted fan ever since. If you've not seen this live footage of "Rainbow High,: definitely watch ... the video quality is not great, but you get a glimpse at the rollercoaster ride she took the audience on ... the tempo is breakneck speed, and there is no question who is in charge. Not to steal Seth Rudetsky's deconstruction routine, but she turns the heat up (on an already very hot stage) at the 1:45 point ("next stop will be Europe") then watch that fur go on her ("dressed up ... somewhere to go"), then she's hilarious at the 2 minute point as she dismisses the men with a wave of her hand ... next, watch her legs from 2:05 to the end (amazing), ending with one more diva toss of the fur. BOW TO THE QUEEN! th-cam.com/video/W9nbX2NY23Q/w-d-xo.html
I saw LuPone do this and she can't be touched. What's remarkable is she learned how to sing while she learned this role (or so she says). It's one of the hardest parts ever written for a female to sing and she seems to have solved every technical problem perfectly. During rehearsals there are stories that she couldn't sing it at all. Nobody even comes close to the finished project though.
Hi, Evita stan here! The screaming is a choice imo. The musical seeks to show Eva as incredibly power hungry, desperate, and a femme fatale. (A lot of the musical happens through Che, a cynical observer’s, eyes).
@@Ssenahkradolleh exactly! Remember, Che is a cynical observer. He’s not too happy about the fact that Argentinian society idolized her so much and basically deified Eva when in reality, she is human like the rest of us.
Elaine Paige hands down. It's an abrasive phrase and She sings it the most instead of shrieking. And the key change made for Madonna, makes her version powerful and dynamic and lovely.
I don’t mind the lower version Madonna sang because you can hear the words much better. Better to hear those money notes just once or twice at the end when you already know the words plus it shows that Eva becomes more impressive as time goes on
Because Madonna gives one heck of a vocal performance even with a lowered key. Those growls and that tasteful phrasing isn't something I could find in ANY of the Broadway singers in this video. The video does compare the notes but alongside that the musicality and interpretation of the singers are also being displayed.....and Madonna definitely shines in the latter deptt.
rishabhrox1 It is an unfair comparison becauase 1. The theatre singers did not have the option to lower the key. It was likely prevented by licensing laws and Equity contracts. 2. Madonna had the luxury of stopping, re-singing individual lines, and real time coaching from a record producer in a studio. The other singers were performing night after night 100% LIVE. This show is full of huge songs, and the performers had to be able to sing the entire show every night. Madonna never had to do that once.
@@deshaunx776 The video doesn't doesn't compare artists... It only compares renditions of these songs, and the character each voice portrays REGARDLESS of what medium it is being performed on and what luxury and all everyone has. Even Broadway singers receive a training session and workshops before portraying a character so let's not pounce on queen Madonna like that. Her RENDITION on it's own, regardless of the key or the fact that it may have been re recorded is amazing and captures the passion and power of Eva's personality brilliantly. Those growls, that phrasing and projection of each word clearly....is unmatchable and in a league of it's own. The Broadway artists have my respect and Madonna can't compare to them, BUT when it comes to giving life to a character, Madonna in my humble opinion did it best with her more restrained yet more well rounded approach.
Awesome choice - I think Patti clearly slays the Broadway version (IMHO, some of the others ranged from really good to truly terrible). It's interesting, but even without considering Madonna's potential vocal limitations (and to be clear here, I am a fan of Madonna's - I would admit that she isn't a great vocalist, but I think her voice sounded the best it ever did around this time, and she clearly worked very hard on this. I think she is a phenomenal and immortal performer overall - put a pure vocalist - no.) concerning this song, I can see the change needed to the song for the movie version. Can you imagine the sound of the song, in that key, in the sound system of the movie theatre? Ouch - it would have hurt! There, they can make the impact of what the song is talking about in the visuals - which would be much more limited in the stage production, and not need to 'ramp it up' with the song as much. Thoughts?
Anne, Madonna's voice did improve a lot after training for Evita. The album she did after Evita sounded really good for this reason. Still I was pissed off that they cast her instead of a real Broadway type singer. It was like sending a halfway decent high school gymnast to the Olympics.
Madonna did her best, I've never heard her sing like this before. The others mostly screamed this notes to my ears but this is obviously written for Broadway singers with big volume output.
Yeah, people have to take note that acting/singing on stage is much different than on film. Madonna's holding back was not just due to vocal limitations.
I disagree. I love Madonna! I've seen her in concert many times but she can't sing at this end of the belt range. It's also in a lower key than the original and the others so she's not actually holding back she's just singing lower notes.
Chocolate Souljah You’re right. Everyone else is singing Es and Gs....she’s singing like an A or B natural instead. The woman after her also sang in the lower key.
Patti’s is definitely the best vocally wise, but I think Madonna’s version is the best overall because it allows you to really listen to the lyrics, while still being a powerful part of the song.
as Miss Patti says: you transpose the music, you change the character of it. Madonna sings this like she's waiting for the Prozac to kick in, Miss Patti is FIRE
Putting Patti aside because it’s just not fair to me, my picks would be 1. Loni Ackerman 2. Eden Espinosa 3. Louise Dearman edit: Florence Lacey was amazing
I did not expect to not hate Madonna as much as I wanted to. Hear me out. Patti's the best, for me, to be clear. They lowered the key for M. But with so many of them, I hear the work, I hear the 'oh, the big note is here' in their voices. Patti, no. Madonna, I hear Evita. I don't love it but it comes across as a true reading of the intent. I was surprised by my memory of this.

2nd: Madonna-Never had I heard her sing like this before. You recognize her voice but she sounds natural and not like other actors in movie versions of musicals and the key was lowered to possibly help her voice range. No wonder this one was a success
1st: LuPone/Espinosa-Both are amazing in their delivery of the melody. You don't see an actor, you see and feel Eva Peron’s personality as a whole! And the belts are just...🤗
Avery Williams I agree!
Avery Williams i
It's lower....
I really don’t like Madona in Evita. She honestly is a movie kill - like Patti said.
I don’t like Elaine Paige’s version because it sounds like she is actually singing in head voice
Michaela was screaming
So were several others
Not Patti
Nope, neither were Elaine, Madonna, and a couple of others.
To be fair belting is literally just controlled yelling.
That hurt my ears and my throat, just listening. Ack!
Lol, putting Patti first makes everyone else look drab
LMAO! Soooo true!
I feel like there was no good spot to put her. Couldve saved the best for last I guess haha
...not to mention better-looking.
Christina de Cicco not getting enough love. One of the few who has able to interpret and express through the lines rather than just surviving.
FR
Patti had a powerful voice!
Black Manta She still has a powerful voice! I saw her in War Paint in the fall, and she still rules the stage, even next to someone like Christine Ebersole.
John Doe Nice!
Patti Lupone is a Wagnerian soprano
Mark Boyayot If she had an operatic voice, I’m sure she would be one. She’s already a soprano, all that needs to change is her head voice tone.
Yeah I like that she growled some of the notes. Now Madonna that high would not be pleasent at all
Mister Golightly Madonna'd never able to do that and stay alive at all...Oh at all.
That's why Madonna didn't sound shrill like the others .
João Vítor she always slured
Always drunk
I love Madonnas version best.
1.)Patti (duh)
2.)Caroline Bowman
3.)Loni Ackerman
Honorable mention: Elaine Paige (I much prefer the way the other ladies deliver the 3rd line but Elaine’s is very creative and it surprisingly doesn’t make me mad she doesn’t go to the G on the last one)
Daniel Baskins Elaine definetely made it work
@DJJ but one of the better ones that's not Lupone.

LuPone, hands down! In her biography she described the terror she felt when doing this role. That's certainly understandable given the fact that the score requires the singer to basically "scream" at the top of the range, over and over again. It's brutal.
Y'all sleeping on Eden Espinosa
its easy to be wide awake for patti though ;)
She was definitely my second
She is my very close second, like so close
Agreed! A very close second to Patti, imho.
She killed as Maureen on Rent
I loved Patti!! Such a great voice!!
Black Manta
Don eggins hey
Wiggins4321 Eggins Hi!
You don't "sing" the songs, you perform them. Look at how Patti Lupone uses every bit of her body delivering those songs! She's the best!
It REALLY annoys me when sopranos try this, it comes out really screamy instead of full and impactful like was intended, it really takes a mezzo. tbh I didn't even really mind when Maddona changed the key, still better than whatever the second one was.
Mezzos have a lower range. I would think mezzos would find it harder to make it stronger than sopranos as soprano have these notes in their range
She is by far the only Eva peron for me
@twentyøne chemical falløutboys atthediscø patti is definitely not a soprano.
Here's the thing, when Patti does it, it's electric. And she doesn't ask for your approval, you have to come to her.
HOW does Patti make it sound so effortless????? When I try this part I sound like a dying clarinet
I agree. She did sound more convincing. Rather than someone just screeching!
@@SusieRed no. Madonna did it weak and breathless because Eva was literally on her death bed.
@@AlexeBriand2002 do you really think i don't know the story? 😄No, Madonna did it because she has a weak voice with very little range. She can't act either, so doing it weak was her ONLY choice
Lmao
Who could dare to perform Andrew Lloyd Webber with only a piano and not a full pit???
Perhaps those who would dare put on a production without licesning the rights and official scores 🤔
It obviously was a high school production.
i think it was at my camp, stagedoor manor. every session we do 14 shows, 7 or 8 of them being musicals, and we have a pianist for every single one, but no other instruments unless it requires an actor to be playing it. but when i was in rent, we didn’t even have our roger, a competent and completely able guitar player, play any of the guitar
i just checked to confirm and yes, this was at stagedoor!
Jacob L. Perry Jr. the production in question was fully licensed! stagedoor manor is a theater camp, and they do not hire full pit bands for the 7 or 8 musicals they put on each session, totaling around 24 musicals in a 9 week time frame
This song definitely only sounds good when the person singing can act as well, patti, Elaine and Eden acted as they sang with variety so that you can hear the shouty desperation they had in their voices mixed in with their talented voices, Evita NEEDED Peron to stay in power so that she does too, yes some people have a good voice but it doesn’t work if you don’t put in the emotion that really gives the song its beauty...
itsCecePerez Christina De Cicco acted it very well too.
Peron wasn't in power at this point.
Patti LuPone is absolutely "the definitive" Evita as well as the Norma from Sunset Boulevard
Lol about the definitive Norma Desmond.
Sorry. Not a patch on Elaine Paige the original London Production.
@@chrisjacobs7417 Thhe very Lloyd Weber said the only one who has sang "With one look" properly as he wrote it was Lupone. Maybe the performance of Close is better in acting at stage but no way to compare the vocal work with Lupone.
@@ismaeleguren8545 he said essentially the same thing about elaine paige and AIWNSG. Lupone's reviews in the show were mixed at best. Glenn Close was almost unanimously praised, with the exception of the New York Times. She won a Tony for her portrayal and reprised her more than two decades later to almost unanimous praise. Let's be real when it comes to the role of Norma Desmond she is synonymous with it in the same way Carol Channing was synonymous Dolly and Ethel Merman was with rose

5:03 idk why but I really liked hers. She added a lot of emotion
Ironic Kylee I agree. She stood out as one of the better singers.
Agree. Better than Lupone.
Madonna's "vocals" were on a sound track... fixed and mixed in the studio...
Gary Green still, it’s her real voice, only EQ’ed with a bit of reverb and echo. autotune was yet to be a thing back then
@@AlexeBriand2002 I don't think I mentioned autotune... Fixing in the mix has been going on forever!
Gary Green it’s still 100% her real voice lmao
MissFawlty I completely agree
ALW sure loves him some soprano high E’s...
Julie RocketQueen Eva is a mezzo
That's a strange way to phrase that. Sure, sopranos sing that note all the time, but it's not a special note for them. When you say soprano Es, I think of E6s, like Christine's note in Phantom of the Opera. Plus, it's not a soprano anything if it's belted, which this very much is/has to be. I would call this a belter E, personally, since, for many belters, this E is one of their highest notes.
David Fathom I guess Alto E? Like, Soprano Belt E? Really the G is the impressive thing here.
Agreed. The Es are in the passaggio for a lot of these singers, which is difficult to sing it, but the belted G is basically unheard of.
I think he's more attracted to that magic G. It's in Evita, Joseph (4 TIMES!!!), and it was ad-libbed into Jesus Christ Superstar.
Madonnas diction has always been amazing. Changing the key was a bold but very smart move and totally agree with what you say.
Madonna truly did great in her movie!
It's so weird to be an argentinian and watch all these people play Eva Perón lmao
especialmente si uno no es peronista, es muy raro cantar "I found my salvation in Peron" jajaj

Patti LuPone by a mile. Surprisingly, Madonna’s version was very pleasing compared to all the screaming wannabees.
it probably was the lowered key, though i do agree madonna's was very pleasant
James Whalen her growl when she sang “may the nation” 😍
It's a lot easier to sing softly in a studio than it is to belt out a song in a stadium to the nosebleed seats.
Himaryous she wasn’t singing _that_ much softly. in fact, Evita was the first project in which Madonna sang mixed/slightly belted notes
Dude it was so much lower, removed half the difficulty
I love Patti’s body language, for me that’s what ties the whole thing together for me
they all fell flat to Madonna’s Divine Interpretation of Evita.

Madonna most certainly did not "own' the screen

YESSSS
Patti LuPone, Eden Espinoza, Louise Dearman
The thing is not who hit best the higher notes, is who hit them better after Patti Lupone. Her performance still gives chills to my spine.
I more amazed by the control Patti Lupone has when she descends from the high notes. All I can say is WOW!
People criticize Madonna for lowering the key but some of these singers should've done the same because they sound shouty as fuck.
Well....
Owen Crystal Omg, when i tell you i wheezed. This is the perfect comment
Haha I chocked. I think it was a high school though ...right ...lol I hope so.
Patti LuPone both has the low tone and powerful belt to sound commanding and strong, while having the insane range of pulling off those high notes. Her acting is phenomenal, and she’s simply an insanely powerful presence on stage.
Madonna was the only singer in which I clearly heard the lyrics.
There is only one EVITA....Patti LuPone

Technically 2, The real EVA Perón and Elaine Paige, Patti isn’t as good as EP
One Broadway EVITA - Patti LuPone
One movie EVITA - Madonna
Both incomparable and stellar performers of this role in their own rights!
rishabhrox1, Elaine Paige out did both of them in this role
what about the real life evita?
Okay I'm not a big fan of this song bc it's so high and screechy- but that's how it's supposed to be- madonna and Louise dearman lowered it quite a bit. Patti was definitely the best
Louise Dearman sings the first four bars down an octave ("he supports you, understands you ... is one of you") but the rest is up the octave and in the key of the score. I believe the only one in a different key is obviously Madonna.
Patti slayed them all
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I liked Madonna's the best. Even though the key was changed so she could hit the notes, that was the one where I understood the lyrics and I felt like "Evita" was the most convincing in her arguments to the people.
I agree with you completely, and I ignore the Madonna haters.
As an expert on Eva, Madonna did her homework and learned the real history of Eva Peron.
Madonna’s version is so underrated. She actually did a great reinterpretation and there’s a reason why her version of Evita is so successful.
Madonna's version is totally appropriate for a movie version, it needs to sound different from the theater version, they're totally different mediums.
You do hear that they had to lower the key for her.
Well !..🙄.. Yes !??? She IS Singing It !... In A Much Lower!... Key !?
Holy shit I love Eden Espinosa.
Power wise Patti but I do like how Madonna delivers the lyrics
the second one makes me want to die
Right?? Made me cringe!!!
Sucha contrast to Patti lmao
Patti LuPone is the best vocally but I have soft spot for Madonna as my favorite Evita since I grew up with the movie and soundtrack. Overall, as someone who’s father was Argentine from a very mixed family, Evita is so special to me and so underrated. It’s my second favorite after Phantom!
I actually saw Elena perform the role and even though Patti is the one true Evita, Elena does SOMETHING with those notes and that role I will always adore.
I mean....is that even a question? Patti all the way
What screams! Madonna made it pleasant to the ear.
I liked Madonna’s version because I could understand the words. Patti Lupone embodies the charisma and that “something extra” that made Evita so beloved in Argentina. They still worship her in Buenos Aires. Her picture is everywhere.
Check the original studio recording with Julie Covington, before the stage version.
Film stage two different mediums especially with regard to performance. Madonna's should not have been included for that reason. Apples and Tomatoes
YES , the movie is 99%a true story , Madonna done very well , as you told , could understand the words , I think Tim Rice did a hard work writing it, i say this as argentinian
Nobody can do these notes like Patti. Nobody
Unpopular opinion but I LOVE Madonna's entire performance and I think I've watched Evita about 10 times lol
Same! So glad to meet someone else that loves it as much as I do
Her performance is so wonderful in this role
Do you like the movie?
Literally. It's so annoying for people to boil it down to "uncontrolled screaming" when it's basically an important aspect in the song if done right.
@@Lyss0624 I’m ambivalent about it, but I would probably need to give it a good watch!

Better to hear those money notes just once or twice at the end when you already know the words plus it shows that Eva becomes more impressive as time goes on
Elaine Paige and Patti LuPone are the best
Not sure how you can compare Madonna to others when she sings in a lower key.
And it's not even a live performance!! So stupid! I like Caroline Bowman though.
Why not? I mean, the lower key doesn't mean she was bad. She was bad cuz she's bad.
@@deshaunx776
The video doesn't doesn't compare artists...
Patti and Elaine are great....but My favorite is Madonna's version.
I'm sure this is controversial, but my favorite was actually Madonna. I just preferred the lower range.
I think an update with Solea Pfeiffer is necessary, cuz she sings in best, after having just seen her do ir.
I saw her too ,she was fantastic. The whole show was terrific
Thoughts?
Always liked Madonnas singing in the movie, but I never thought about it like that! Agree with you in every point
