The thing about electric cars is that while they are undoubtedly very fast, many of them can feel, well, a little emotionless to drive. But Hyundai's motorsport division believes they have the answer to this, and it's called the Ioniq 5N, an electric car it believes will make even the most dedicated petrolhead want to get behind the wheel.
The N version gets some really tasty 21-inch wheels with fat, sticky tyres, ’N’ badges and a surprisingly tasteful bodykit, including a wing and rear diffuser. According to Hyundai, something that wears an ’N’ badge has to have the go to match the show. And this car really does, because it shares some of its hardware with the Kia EV6 GT - which electrifying has already driven. And did silly things in.
But here it’s got a bigger 84kWh battery, so the range should be up there. But better than that, there’s up to 640bhp and just under 550lb ft of torque - and if that means nothing to you, a 0-62mph time of around 3.4 seconds and 160+mph top speed might impress. You’ll be beating Lamborghinis off the line with that kind of speed.
The Ioniq 5 also has some party tricks up its sleeve - the strangest being the N Active Sound system which is played through ten different speakers - eight on the inside and two on the outside. ‘Ignition’ is supposed to sound like a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine - complete with pops-and-bangs, Evolution is an electronic sound inspired by a Gran Turismo concept car, the 2025 Vision, and Supersonic simulates an..er.. fighter jet.
But we’ve seen noise-making electric cars before. What we haven’t had is the noise reacting to revs from a gearbox. Because this electric car has a mode called N e-Shift in which you can change fake gears via the paddles, and the noise rises and falls with it.
But the powertrain will also change as you change ‘gear’, and cut torque - it gives it a little jolt - and provide synthesised engine braking, so it really feels like something mechanical is happening. There’s also a rev-counter and it’ll hit a fake rev-limiter. It’s a completely made-up 8-speed double-clutch gearbox…
Join Ginny as she takes a close look at the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. What do you think of it? Would you opt for something else instead? Let us know in the comments below.

Being a owner of the i30N, so not really a fan of EVs I thought this was going to be one of those typical Electrics but just the fact that it has a virtual gearbox and also you can emulate the engine sound of my i30N is the big reason why I really do want one. It absolutely looks beautiful.

As a three-pedal hot hatch driver, this actually makes perfect sense to me. I have no qualms about the fake gearbox: I want the extra control surface and engine braking that manually shifting provides you -- as to how they actually achieve that, I couldn't give a Donald Duck. A big issue I've had with electric cars is the dull one-gear driving. _Theoretically_ this fixes that.

High power BEVs are common in the world, but Ioniq5N is not just high power BEVs. The true value of the Ioniq 5N is that it is the first BEV to offer the potential and fun to conquer the track. In the meantime, has there been a BEV in the world that can run the track for many sessions? Finally a BEV that can mercilessly attack track and winding is born. It's too boring to just talk about design and HP.

This is a different car to the classic Ioniq 5, I suspect many of these may end up in hedges or on the other side of the highway based on their performance specs and remember they did use the Nurburgring to help test/design it. You didn't mention that you can turn off all those stupid noises they have designed as well as I noticed in another review who showed the screen when it was on there was an 'Off' button at the bottom so no sounds at all for those who prefer silence and just the road and tyre noise.

With only 17 cm free bottom it's to low for an SUV.
Thios said...I never will pay the money for this extra engine power. 5,3 seconds from 0-100km/h is also more than good enough. But the 84KWH battery would interest me for my current project 45 model. Also the wiper on the rear...however I do not miss that wiper really...I'm used to look in the side mirrors already for >40 years. (and that long ago most cars did not have a rear wiper)

Before I comment I would like to point out I own a Ev & im not a Ev hater. But the truth around ev's needs to be told. So many are misinformed around the costs of Ev ownership & Range & charge times.
The first point is can you save money driving an Ev ?
If its a company car I would say yes you can save money owning an EV. If you buy a second hand one cheap with out expensive car finance that's efficient eg Zoe , I3 , Leaf , Kona & charge at home Yes again. Or if you have access to free charging yes again.
But for the normal person who is buying privately & using a PCP or HP the answer is a big NO.
Even if you get free charging the extra interest you pay on the cars finance deal will wipe out any fuel savings you make driving an EV.
People always post how cheap they have done say 200 miles for eg it only cost them £5.00 to charge & they did 200 miles. I had a discussion with one of those guys the other day & tried to inform him he was wrong but like most he was having none of it.
You see he failed to work out the true cost of that charge & missed a few things out. He was on a cheap night rate electric paying just £0.10p per kWh , He used 50 kWh to do 200 miles so he calculated 50 x 10p = £5.00 which is totally wrong if you want the true cost of that 200 miles. You see these cheap night rate tariffs mean you pay more for your other electric out of these hours in his case he gets 4 hours cheap night rate , which means the other 20 hours in that day he was paying £0.10p more per kWh than if he was on just a standard rate. So because the only reason he is on the cheap night rate is to charge his car that extra cost should go onto the running cost of that car. He & his family average 14 kWh a day , so he is paying an extra £1.40 a day for his electric even when he doesn't charge his car. So being generous lets say he & his family are only at home for 300 days a year. That would still mean he will pay around £420.00 a year extra in electric costs just for being on that tariff. Another point I tried to point out to him was when his cars battery had received 50 kWh , He would have paid for between 52.5 kWh to 57.5 kwh as you lose electric throughout the transfer & the conversion from AC to DC that takes place when charging on AC. Which is between 5% all the way to 15%. So a rough calculation if his does 200 miles like he said on 50 kWh of electric & he does 10,000 a year he would need 2500 kWh a year to run his car. Now im being very generous again here as this 200 miles is summer usage & in the cold months would drop by up to 30%. But we will just be very generous to keep certain people from say ive been unfair. So working on the middle ground between the 5% to 15% in loses during a recharge , lets say 10%. So he will be paying for an extra 250 kWh of electric that year in loses. So that adds a further £25.00 , That brings the total to £445.00 a year , which strait away needs to come off any fuel saving you might make from switching. Add the cost of charging on the cheap rate brings that total to £695.00 a year for 10,000 miles. Now compare this to say a petrol car that only averages 40 mpg means you make a yearly saving of around £800.00 on fuel , Thats going off my local Tesco price per litre.
So if you buy a Ev on a 4 year PCP Deal you would save around £3200 in fuel costs over that 4 years. Sounds good Ye !!!!!!!!!
The trouble comes because as we all know EV's cost a lot more to buy , Eg here a cheap one MG ZS EV top spec cost £35,495 Petrol version top spec £19,000. Lets forget the £16,495 price difference , being generous again. MG offers 0% PCP or HP Deals on the petrol one but on there standard PCP deal for EV's they dont offer 0%. So on that Ev if you put £10,000 down deposit for that EV you will pay £6,900 in interest charges alone. So even tho you can save maybe £3200 in fuel over the 4 years , your still worse off by £3,700 because of the interest charge being high because the Ev version is nearly twice as much to buy in the first place.
Also related to home charging that guy failed to mention , is that the 50 kWh he used that day would take 2 nights of charging at home on the cheap rate to replace in his car. As he only gets 4 hours of cheap rate electric & he like 99% of the UK only has a 7kwh charger which in 4 hours will only give him a max out put of 28 kWh per night. So if you need to do a big journey the next day you would have to either pay the premium day rate or use a very expensive public charger. These calculations were worked out with him averaging 4.0 miles per kWh. Now if you buy an Audi 55 Etron or I pace you will be lucky to average even 2.5 / 6 miles per kWh. Plus no winter reduction in range was taken into account.
I also never added the cost of a home charger which for a cheap one fitted start at around £1000 & up , depends on the charger & where you want it plus any upgrades they need to do to your home consumer unit so they can fit it. I also never mention Ev's cost more to insure compared to the petrol equivalent. And dont think you will save money on servicing because unless you buy a Tesla 99% of manufactures say it must be yearly serviced & if you dont you will lose the Warrenty plus for the first 1 to 4 years of ownership there is hardly any difference in servicing costs between an Ev over a petrol car. And in some cases dealers actually charge more.
Like I said im not a EV hater I drive an Ev but I was lucky I bought mine when you still got a grant towards the cars & the chargers. And my Ev averages apart from the winter months 5.2 miles per kWh. So its still cheap to run. But im stuck as I want a new car but its not worth paying out for a new Ev at this moment in time. The UK Ev car market is in serious trouble at this moment in time , A work colleague has the MG5 long range 61 kWh top spec version on a 22 plate he bought it last January 2022 on a PCP Deal so its only 18 months old with 16k on the clock. He wanted to exchange it for the new shape. He paid £31,000 for it , MG has offered him just £15,000 they say the book price is between £12,800 & £15,000 px prices. So after 18 months of ownership & just 16k miles they actually want off him to end the PCP deal £12,000 if you add on to that his deposit & his payments the car has cost him £25,000 for 18 months of use. So he has no choice but to keep it as he can't afford to pay it off & get another car. But he is very worried now because the ballon payment is due in 2 & a half years & that's £12,000 but if his car is only worth between £12,800 & £15,000 now it will not be worth the ballon payment at the end of his PCP , So it will not be worth buying & he will get nothing back towards his next car. So for 4 years of ownership it will have cost him still around £25,000. He could have bought the top spec MG ZS petrol for £19,000 & after 4 years of ownership he would be £6,000 better off & still own a car out right.
And at this moment in time most PCP Deals are the same , A TH-cam guy posted about Porsche saying they weren't interested in buying his Tycan 4s back. After he spoke to one of the sales guys apparently Porsche are predicting a lot of these will come back to Porsche as they will not be worth there ballon payments either so customers will not pay them off. His Tycan apparently cost with a few extras £124,000 & at 2 years of age is only worth px price of £45,000 to £50,000 & private sale maybe £60,000 Thats a massive lose for a two year old Porsche as Porsche normally hold there many pretty good.
The Ev world has gone bananas in the last 18 months & so as the charger network on its pricing. With some Rapid / ultra rapid networks charging £0.95 per kWh & Even some networks charging £0.85 per kWh for AC Charging. If things like this dont change I believe the Ev market is going implode.
And thats a shame as Ev drive so nice & smooth.

I need a set of reins and it has to make a clip clop sound said no one ever who drove an ICE car so why do we need fake gearboxes and engine sounds? Grow up Hyundai.

Even the EV6 GT was already a disaster when it came to efficiency and range for the price. This will be even worse. Hard pass. Also can we stop with the boost modes? Just give max power... always.

I want to preface my statement by saying I'm not being rude, just for context. That being said what do you expect from a performance vehicle? You're not buying this vehicle expecting range and efficiency.

They updated the ev6 gt to now go 300miles.. plus 5N has a even bigger battery which is better temperature regulated than any other ev out there it won’t have range efficiency issues

@@CyAn-S How about an owner? My EV6 GT is getting 270-290 miles of range. I drive mostly in Normal mode with enough bursts in GT mode to keep me happy. I’m sure if I drove more carefully and never used GT mode I could get over 300 miles. The EPA rating is ridiculously easy to beat. I have had mine for 6 months and I don’t know anything about an update.

I would recommend no one in canada to buy a hyundai car because of their poor supply of service parts and poor quality parts. My new elentra 2022 ran ac for 3 month last year seasonal use canada and then there was a part having issue which made my summer difficult. Just got out of waranty as 1 year got over. Part in backlog ordered may 25th. My son had an fenderbender and the waiting on part is more than a month. I put the car in storage for now using my nisaan pathfinder which never had a problem on anything
For me impressed with ionic5 booked one in 2021 still waiting. I have decided to take back my money. Hyundai is far from delivering service in ontario. Cant say about usa. However not buy hyundai cars in canada is my personal experience.

Rather sadly, many or most people, in fact, don't have a clue about the meaning of .6 G brake regeneration force and its importance in this EV.
Simply put, it means the state of the art battery's thermal management technology, which also explains its super fast charging capability.
By the way, the "stock" Ioniq 5 N's Nordschleife 7.45,59 min HOT LAP has already been out to prove its engineering marvel even without the carbon ceramic brakes.
Actually, it is the first ever EV that tested by a third party in Nürburgring, while all the other manufacturers like Tesla, Porsche and Audi rejected the test request multiple times.
