Josh Okeefe - "Foggy Dew" (Live from Rathcoursey East, Co. Cork)

- Deoch an dorais: drink of the door, or one for the road, as the old saying goes. And what better way to take our leave, if only for a while, than with the timeless strains of "Foggy Dew"? This traditional, much like a well-poured pint, lingers long after it's gone, leaving you with the taste of something real, something that matters.
This performance was captured in a friend’s workshop on a misty afternoon in Rathcoursey East, Co. Cork, where the air itself hums with the echoes of old tales and rebel songs. There’s a distinct magic in that place where the land kisses the sea, which makes a man think of the stories that have shaped a people and the music that has carried them through it all.
As I share this last-for-now video, I’m enveloped by that familiar feeling of a bittersweet departure, much like the final note of a tune you never want to end. But just as "Foggy Dew" highlights what’s worth remembering, let this serve as a reminder that some things are never truly left behind. They stay with us, woven into the fabric of who we are, waiting for the next time we gather to raise a glass and sing once more.
Slán go fóill, and until we meet again, may the music keep you company.

Man, seeing you and the brilliant Hansard live would be amazing. You ever plan on visiting Germany?
@@lukemoll2308 I would love to get all the way up there! Where is good to play?
@@BoarhideGaming I am really looking forward to the shows. I visited Germany last year, Rudolstadt Festival, have you heard of it? I would love to go back.
@@joshokeefeofficial I have not heard of it, no. But I have just had a google and the focus next year’s Folkfest Rudolstadt is going to be “Mali”, which is amazing. I love Mali’s music.
Maybe I’ll take a look
One of my favourite songs and have heard many versions but wow, what a phenomenal version of this song. Sung in its purest form, simple and full of passion. Currently sat on a train in Dublin watching old terraced houses file past the window and thinking about how crazy and confused that day in Dublin in Easter 1916 must have been. What an incredible story this city has. Fair play Josh, it takes a lot of restraint to keep these songs simple and raw, and you've brought something which I think is a tear to my eye. Maith thú.
Been blown away by all of your music since I found ya on Instagram. My Grand Da turned me onto Irish Folk music when I was young listening to the Dubliners Clancy Brothers and Irish Rovers and the like. My man you have brought me back to those times when he would drive me to school and he would be playing the songs from his home absolutely love it!
I’m a born and raised Texan but my dear mam, God rest her soul, named me after where she grew up in Co. Meath. She used to sing this song softly to me when I was a boy to get me to sleep. Lost her 6 years ago, so thank you for posting this. Brought back some warm memories for me. “Go Raibh Suaimhneas Síoraí Uirthi”
Hi, my friend - I am so sorry to hear about your mother, and I am sending all my best wishes to you and your family. It makes me heart happy to know it has brought you back some warm memories. It makes all of this worthwhile to receive a message like this.
If you ever had ANY doubts about the advertisement investment then like... DON'T lmao. I was watching an oompaville video and this song popped up.. and I was immediately taken along on such a beautiful and sad journey told in melody.. if anything thanks for gifting me a new favorite song lol
that is so class, hey any extra that comes my way from views ect, goes straight back into the channel, so I am glad it's getting to new folks like yourself
This has become one of my favorite videos. So special ❤
thank you CC always glad you like the videos!
I think this is the best cover I've heard! Top quality
No one will ever sing this the way you've done it, Pal.
Unbelievable. I've got a new favorite video!!
May have only found you now, but god damn. Having found you is probably what striking gold must feel like.
ahh stop. that is very nice of you. thank you
Fantastic rendition. Your voice perfectly relates the frustration and pride of that fruitless heroism in the face of overwhelming power.
hey, that really means a lot to me. thank you so much for saying that
@@joshokeefeofficial you’re very welcome mate. You’re genuinely one of my favourite artists on TH-cam right now.
No, it wasn't fruitless at all, "For slavery fled by our Fenian dead in the Springtime of the year".
But I know what you mean, 1000 poorly armed men against half a million well armed and trained soldiers does seem fruitless.
@@noeldoyle4501 too right
@@noeldoyle4501 Well spoken. But you got my drift. This bloke's voice is like honest, rusted iron against oppressive steel. Fits perfectly.
An extraordinary rendition-just fantastic. Thank you for creating and sharing.
The setting is excellent, adding so much depth to it. The flame burns gently within anyone who dares to reach for it, whether in kitchens, offices, fields, or workmen's sheds.
True patriotism is not narrow-minded nationalism; it is the common ground of the common people, of what is right against what is wrong. Brotherhood against the fascist clan, no matter what insidious guise it takes. Each generation must say, ¡No pasarán!
Thank you so much for this beautiful message. I really appreciate your kind and inspiring words. You are so appreciated, and I want you to know how much it means to me. So glad you like the video and can connect with it, my friend. Don't be a stranger, talk again soon! Best wishes, Josh Okeefe

Nice one man! Plenty of character in that house!
isn't there just? i was supposed to film at an abandoned boat yard but was rained out. later that day i went to put some clothes in the washing machine in my friends workshop and thought this would be good place to sit down and sing a song

You need to come to leeds🇬🇧 🏴 😊
would love to, i was at the brudenell social club once upon a time
Josh, loving the old irish ballads, outstanding rendition, your voice holds so true, just wondering what you use to record while filming? i seen you said you do this yourself. Very keen to record my own material sounding as good a quality as you do.
Thank you so much for the kind words, I really appreciate it especially when there are so many great version of this brilliant irish ballad.
If you are talking about the audio, I just use 2 lav mics, one clipped to the top of my jumper (which you can see in the video) and the other taped into the sound hole of my guitar. However, I must stress that the performance to me is the most important factor when capturing. I have used a phone before too! Hope this helps?
Josh any particular brand for mic?? Thanks so much for responding

haha class! Thanks for stopping by Josh. Wishing ya all the best
🤗 🇨🇭 👌
thanks for stopping by!
Not my style of music at all. However you have an awesome sounding voice, you can play the guitar well, and I respect that you have zero autotune and it's not garbage rap music. This is authentic. I won't lie to you and say that ill become a fan/follower because this is not my kind of music. But ill like and subscribe because you have actual talent unlike some of these other "Artists".
thank you so much for the really nice message, like and sub! I really appreciate it.
