why does positive charge accumulate at the upper edges of clouds and negative near lower edges of the clouds?
Water vapour move upward so due to decreasing temp.as molecules of water goes up it condens and generate heat due to which molecules continue moving up and at the time when it crocess zero degree celcius at middle portion of clout it convert into ice , the small ice continue it's upward movement and when it became heavy it starts falling to earth , in this middle portion of cloud small ice are moving upward and heavy ice are moving downwards it get collide due to which a spark produces and free electron generate negative charge , it wants to depose it's charge to ground bcz it is postive as compare to cloud so , a potential difference set up which cause lighting .

There are two types of lightning i.e positive and negative.
The difference between positive and negative lightning is that positive lightning transfers a positive charge to the ground, while negative lightning transfers a negative charge. Positive lightning is much more dangerous and accounts for less than 5% of all strikes.
