In this long overdue video, I reaquaint myself with a car that I have a long association with, the Corrado VR6. Will I decide to go buy one after remembering how much I loved them in the past or show I have never "met my hero" (again)? Stay tuned to find out!
Behind the scenes info : This invite to make this video arrived late on Friday and it was uploaded late on Saturday! It came about because I'd been having a lockdown clearout and found some old Corrado VR6 wheels which I advertised and the owner of this car who I've know for years got in touch and tempted me to deliver with the prospect of a drive so he could get my opinion on it. He lives 1 mile off my commute so how could I say no? Next morning I was on his doorstep dribbling and was lucky enough to spend a few hours with the car, all filming was solo though the owner followed me out his daily Passat and helped with the car to car and the the fly by footage. It took a while to get some decent takes as I'd done very little prep and my memory on these is fading but we got there in the end helped by the half decent weather and some great roads.
The owner previously had a Scirocco GTX for many years which he sold to buy this and has had a fleet of VWs (and the odd Skoda) for decades, his name will be familiar to readers of VW Driver magazine as he often wrote letters which got published in there, those were the days....
Thanks for all your support people and please do keep the comments coming though I'll probably not reply until Monday as need some time off 🙌

Brilliant, I built a VR6 powered mk2 gti about 12 years ago (I still own it) and it took eibach arbs and a set of KW V1s to make it handle anywhere near a corrado. My engine only has 60k on it, its lovely.

Love a corrado. Drove a G60 when i was 18. Still one of the coolest cars i’ve driven!

I had a G60, i wanted a VR6 but came across a super low milage, one owner late G60 and couldn't refuse it. Loved mine. Vince at Stealth put some coilovers on it and set it up. I ended up sending mine to Australia when i moved there in '05, it was a very rare car there. Sold it for a MK4 R32 in the end. I wonder if VW will ever re-create it like they did the Scirocco

Funnily enough I walked past one yesterday. Hadn’t seen it for a while & thought the guy had sold it. It really struck me how small it is compared to modern stuff!

I had a 1990 16v for about 10 years. Ended up stripped out and a bit highly strung. Amazed it drove excellently at the very low ride height ! . Also a standard late 2.0 16v for a short time. Door mirrors also used on the mclaren F1 and numerous TVR’s of the time. Must have been a good aero shape! People used to come up and ask if I could raise and lower the spoiler. A novelty back then

Always have a soft spot for the Corrado. Spent many years on the Corrado forum, a great bunch of enthusiasts and invaluable depth of knowledge. Had my G60 remapped and worked on by G-WERKS and JMR with ported charger, smaller pulley etc. Sold that and moved to a Vr6. With a BMC filter they sound gorgeous due to the variable inlet tracts. I ended up super charging that with a rotrex charger, mapped to near 300bhp by Vince at Stealth. With a decat it sounded lovely and surprised many new modern cars with its power to weight ratio. Both always got postive comments and it was one of those cars that people would stop to talk to you about them or give you a positive comment at the traffic lights.

I bought a five year old (1992) Corrado G60 in 1997, and drove it for 10 years. It was reported to be the best production, front wheel drive chassis ever. All I can say is, if there was any car around today with the same road presence, performance, handling, and personality, I hope I'd be in a position to own one, because that Corrado was 10 years of pure driving pleasure. Sadly missed. If any youtube channel could potentially identify, review, and recommend a vehicle approaching that calibre, good chance it would be here on VolksWizard. Subscribed, and thank you for your work.

Had one in the same color. 😁 then I had to change the body to a violett touch pearl due to rust. Also was lucky enough to have found a VSR intake manifold for the vr6 engine. 😍
My first car, hopefully I never have to sell it.
Fun fact, those mirrors were also used for the McLaren F1 and several TVR's

I was fortunate enough to drive one of these cars back in 1995, the car was only about 6 months old. At the time I drove a Golf mk2 gti 8 valve, so in comparison, the corrado was in a different league. I remember the power delivery to be not too dissimilar to a forced induction motor with a good useable power band. Nice car..

Lovely old things these Andrew. My in laws neighbours have one that looks to just be sat gathering dust (and sadly rust).....shame to see such a classic going under but then as you say I guess to restore one is both tricky and very expensive.

Hats off to the owner too, for the work and love to get it to that standard and keep it looking that good. Keep safe and well pal.

Got a VR6 Corrado again last year after selling my last one 10 years ago (prior to that had the 16v). Keeping this one! Scene has totally changed (obviously!) and parts are dearer, but persevere and parts are available as unfortunately quite a few seem to be getting broken.
The forum knowledge base is excellent and a really helpful bunch.
Great videos by the way, have watched quite a few in last few day’s, lifelong vow fan too 👍

I "only" had the 16v but i fekkin LOVED it! Getting the rear wheel up when cornering was great fun. I miss the creak as the spoiler came up. Meant to fix it but never did, felt like some of the character of the car. Had to get shot because the dif went. It went to a dub mechanic though so I believe it's still on the road. Epic cars, nothing quite like em!

Had 3 of these. 1st a Pearl Green VR6 with Koni Coilovers, Magnex and BMC CDA induction kit. 2nd a Red VR6T running 400bhp and 3rd another VR6 that had Shrick cams and inlet manifold that had some issues that I bought to break, doubled my money on that. Now have a MK5 R32 but would love another at some point, shame the prices are going crazy.

I owned a '92 VR6 SLC silver/black that I bought new. It was a great car but all I can say is I should have bought a used e30 M3 instead. Living in Michigan and using the car as a daily driver, I thought the VR6 with FWD was more practical. They were pretty close in price at the time and we all know where the 2 cars are now. And it was not without its problems. Sunroof misalignment, new gearbox , and a new ECU all replaced under warranty. But I loved that engine.

I used to work for the local VAG dealer as a valeter late 1980's to Early 90's - but I used to get to swan around going for tax discs, parts, picking cars up or dropping them off so naturally I got to drive Polo's, Golf's, 'Rocco's, Passat's, Corrado's and Audi 80s, 90s, 100s, 200s, Coupe's and Avant's and generally anything available on the forecourt if they were in a hurry mmmmmmm Range Rover's, BMW's, Renault I think you get the drift, the dealer would always give the salesmen cars that reflected their personality, Passat or Golf for the family man, Polo coupe, Rocco GT, Golf GTi for the young-ish single dude, same in the Audi dept, when told to go and get a salesman's car to go to say Aberdeen for Licences or Peterhead to our other VAG dealer for parts, I'd always aim for a guy called Ray young single and they always gave him a Rocco OR when it was introduced - the Corrado, Ahh those were the days - I hated the days when I actually had to valet cars they were boring but being out on the road was amazing and I got to drive some absolutey awesome (now classic) cars whilst being a low paid car cleaner, Nice vid very nostalgic cheers.

Once known as a cut price Ferrari and like the prancing horse best on a good road. Not really a town car although still much more civilized than the Ferrari of that time! Love the engine note. Shame we can't somehow artificially play the sound of a vr6 in our 4 cylinder turbos or electric vehicles. But for some reason we can't do a convincing imitation. Even on Forza horizon r where I'm the proud owner of a Corrado vr6 it sounds wrong. About 50 percent there but artificial

volkswizard Aha, I assumed they were the same. My dad used to have a modified ‘94 Golf GTD in Dusty Mauve. This reminded me of it. Impossible to find one that survived though.

Andrew ,, so what did you decide , when having your reflective drive home?.
I always liked the Golf VR6. My neighbour ,a pilot on long haul out of Heathrow used to love blitzing up the M4 from J 17 to J 4 . I used to get behind the wheel on the odd occasion at weekend around our country roads locally. He and I both had growing families he the got a Sharan VR6 which it also loved and I had bought a Sharan top spec 2.0 ltr petrol for my wife /me which was also a great car for us.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Cool memories! VR6 Sharan is a handy source of VR6 parts and Ford dealers were open cheaper than VW, weird considering they were effectively middle men. I'd quite like to mildly restore a Corrado VR6 now the prices justify it. Definitely would like to improve suspension on a standard one with Bilsteins but keep the ride height unless it could be lowered just a bit. They look great low but the height is key part of the look, touch choice. I've got Stealth a short bike ride away from home now which will help. Need to get the business back on the post Covid road first though..

@@volkswizard Yep fully agree with your priority . Did you manage to shift one of the UP GTi yet .
My missus is operating out of hospitals in Cornwall and had an free apartment offered to NHS workers at Watergate Bay I great location . She has been putting loads of miles on he Polo GTi so I offered the UP GTi to use, as I have had to isolate ( Vulnerable ) at my daughter's & her husband's place at Southrop near Lechlade and I have our dog with me in their annex. Have the Golf R mk7.5 parked in her driveway for 8 weeks now - very frustrating when you love driving.
Anyway she is loving using the UP for both her 3 hour commute down to Cornwall from Wiltshire and buzzing around the Cornish roads. VAG(VW) / Porsche / Seat family ,as her son has a Ibiza FR 1.4 3dr manual.
