I like how this film captured what the book was like, basically like a lot of Dahl's films it was quite dark but never quite going that extra mile into horror nor does it lose the fact that it is at the end of the day, a childrens story. Apparantly Dahl actually liked this film when Cosgrove showed it to him which i think is pretty good. It's not often authors are happy with films made of their work and Dahl was one of the pickiest.
3:50 I love how Sophie goes “Ah yes. A giant cloaked figure looming over the houses and peering into windows. All’s good. Aight. Imma just go back to- WOAH WAIT A MINUTE WHAT THE FUCK??” This movie unironically formed some of my sense of humour today.
Sir Mark Rylance was believable as The BFG because he had the persona and the voice. Having Steven Spielberg directing and John Williams composing the music The BFG is perfectly matched.
Nothing wrong with writing stories like that. Kids love dark stories. It's only the adults who censor stories. Ask any kid and it's the stories that made them shiver that they will remember years from now.
I haven't seen this movie since I was a little kid. The movie scared the shit out of me in some parts, incredibly dark atmosphere. My favourite Dahl adaptation.
Such a thrill to find these videos! My elementary students chose this book for their LUNCH BUNCH selection. These were perfect to spark discussions! Love the deeper messages about honor, love, loyalty, sacredness of all life in the story!
I would recommend watching Steven Spielberg's adaptation of The BFG starring Sir Mark Rylance as the Big Friendly Giant and Ruby Barnhill as Sophie with the musical score by John Williams.
I am just grateful that Steven Spielberg directed The BFG because he has had the ability to connect with children in a big way on the big screen, and if Tim Burton directed it the film would have been far too gory, bloody and extreme to be viewed by children in the cinema because of Tim Burton's reputation for dark comedy, unpredictable black humour, Gothic horror, the grotesque gruesome and grisly, the creepy shadows, the ugly and the sinister, and blood and gore from his previous films like Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd.
Yes it is Sir David Jason who did the voice of the BFG in this film and also did the voice of Toad in The Wind in the Willows, Dangermouse and Count Duckula.
I personally prefer the soundtrack by John Williams in Steven Spielberg's film The BFG starring Sir Mark Rylance and Ruby Barnhill because it fits in with the weird and whimsical world that Roald Dahl created in the original book.
I am just grateful that Steven Spielberg directed The BFG because he has had the ability to connect with children on the big screen for many years, and if Tim Burton directed it the film would have been far too gory, bloody and extreme to be viewed by children in the cinema because of Tim Burton's reputation for dark comedy, unpredictable black humour, creepy shadows, Gothic horror, grotesque, gruesome and grisly images, the ugly and the sinister and blood and gore from his previous films like Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd.
even the music and voices are bringing back so many memories, I was shit sacred of this film when I was younger... bet I still am now, it's a freakin' horror film!
I always imagined Sophie in the Cosgrove Hall film as Masie Lockwood when we see her for the first time hiding in the shadows of Lockwood Manor on the top floor of the house in Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom at the beginning of the film.
I love the scene of her shoving her heels in her sneakers.. Beautifully done! - omg! The opening wasn't so awful! You guys got me scared for nothing! Lol!!
I had a dream about 2016's giants. I was in the garden and found them searching for me. I tried hiding in next door's chicken pen which was rather humiliating. As soon as they weren't looking, I managed to make a run for it. Trouble is I can't remember happened to me next.
I recommend watching Steven Spielberg's adaptation of The BFG starring Sir Mark Rylance as the Big Friendly Giant and Ruby Barnhill as Sophie accompanied with the musical score by John Williams.
This film used to TERRIFY me as a child. Wait, scratch that, it's still terrifying. But sort of terrifying in a good way - I like it; it's so whimsical.
Ahh! I used to LOOOOOVE this movie, but I haven't seen in in prob ten years or so! THANK YOU for posting this!! I've been wanting to watch it again for a while! Loved Roald Dahl books! Such a great writer!
this intro reminds me of dreams, or a nightmare. i think the guy who did thid really wanted to get his depiction of thr nature of dreams. and it kinda fits like that strangely. dreamatic and echo soundings
Steven Spielberg did a magnificent job on The BFG and Sir Mark Rylance portrayed a believable Roald Dahl character and the musical score by composer John Williams was absolute perfection. Spielberg and Williams were meant to bring The BFG to life on the Big Screen.
This was a direct to DVD film. Steven Spielberg brought it to life on the Big Screen starring Sir Mark Rylance as the BFG and Ruby Barnhill as Sophie accompanied with the musical score by John Williams, and I think The BFG is one of Steven Spielberg's best Children's films he has ever worked on since E.T. The Extra Terrestrial and Hook.
I loved this film as a kid! I remember bringing my family's vhs to school for my elementary school class to watch after we finished reading the book. :)
I'm 13 now, and i havent watched this since i was about 7. Reason being, my video player stared to eat all the videos i put into it (by ate i mean, pulled all the film out), and i would always watch it till to end and the rewind it and play again. ive got a habit of it even today. only nows its DVD's for me. luckily tho, my mums friend has got a working video player, and she says i can have it. so i can again watch all my fave disney vids tht were passed down to me from my big bro and sis x
The intro has a sort of Doctor Who feel to it as the fiery tunnel looks a bit like the time vortex. Has anyone thought a Tardis was gonna fly in this? lol
@@alexmacleod3728 I didn't know that. I have seen this as a child and I have seen Steven Spielberg's film adaptation of The BFG starring Sir Mark Rylance as the Big Friendly Giant and Ruby Barnhill as Sophie with the musical score by John Williams and his musical score does suit this classic Roald Dahl children's book. I think The BFG is Steven Spielberg's best Children's Film since E.T. The Extra Terrestrial and Hook.
I only seen a little bit of this when I was a child. Only got to the part where a kid was dreaming about turning invisible and scaring the family. members.
It's funny how she doesn't try running away when the BFG spots her watching him. I know in this version she barely has a second to react but in the live action movie she has more than enough time to react
I remember watching this movie when I was in 2nd grade including reading the book. Now I'm 16 and a junior in high school. I miss my childhood, including this movie :)
That intro music just reminded me of how creepy I found this film. It's one of my absolute favourites from when I was a child and I'm so glad I've been reunited with it!
i just finished the book....its funny!! i love the whizpopping chapter.....my mom posted the whizpopping part on her facebook...every one is like "What were you drinking last night" and "i want one" and "abby needs to stop reading all together!"
Ever seen Steven Spielberg's 2016 film starring Sir Mark Rylance and Ruby Barnhill with the musical score by John Williams? That film I highly recommend is worth watching.
I loved this movie when I was a kid, and I loved the book too :). Oddly enough, it didn't scare me. Perhaps I'd had plenty of stories with giants by that time or something. This was the first one I'd ever heard of with a friendly giant though :).
*Cries* I loved this show as a kid and I'm going to send it to my older sister who's 20 now. She absolutely loved the BFG and I couldn't find this anywhere at all!! Thank you so much for putting it on youtube for people like me!!! Thanks!!
I have always loved this movie, watching it as a kid. Its so original. The book is just as good, equally as funny- you got to love Roald Dahl for his imaginative work.
@GuysSeriously - I think that's because of how kids rationalise, Aliens happened in space/on another world, this happened on Earth, and as a kid, you fear a giant could come after you to eat you.
It's so haunting.. especially the beginning, with the music and all. I was terrified as a kid for those evil giants!
Yeh the opening credits feel something out of a Hitchcock film.
I like how this film captured what the book was like, basically like a lot of Dahl's films it was quite dark but never quite going that extra mile into horror nor does it lose the fact that it is at the end of the day, a childrens story.

I believe that's called a Double Take.
AWESOME SOUND in these old movies ! The giants breathing really scared me as a kid. Side note ; i hope TIm burton keeps his hands off !
I should point out that's Del Boy voicing the BFG, which is what makes this film quite funny for me lol
Agreed ^^
When BFG flies through the sky to Giant Country is like an ET moment and, ironically, Spielberg directed the live action film.
Sir Mark Rylance was believable as The BFG because he had the persona and the voice. Having Steven Spielberg directing and John Williams composing the music The BFG is perfectly matched.
Would the other giants do the same or would they have a different way of getting in? I’ve always wondered that
Nothing wrong with writing stories like that. Kids love dark stories. It's only the adults who censor stories. Ask any kid and it's the stories that made them shiver that they will remember years from now.

i loved this movie but was so scared of the bad giants as a kid!!! it used to give me nightmares but always watched it any way!! brilliant movie!
one of the best cartoons ever made.
The opening always used to scare me when I was younger

It's a mixture of both, love it. It's to make the audiance see it strange but amazed, that's the idea and it worked. To give mixed emotions.
Years later and this still gives me the creeps.
I love the fact that David Jason is the voice :) Good ol' Del Boy is the BFG.
Sir Mark Rylance portrayed a believable character in Steven Spielberg's film The BFG in 2016.
this brings back memories, i never noticed before but this film has a very "anime" charm to it, which i think works very well with the story

Cartoons used to be so amazing! What happened? This movie is awesome.

It's funny how big the BFG looks in that village but he's like a midget in Giant Country seeing all the others are like twice his size.
Best cartoon film ever made.
R.Dahl's books were literary gold... The man is, and always will be, the best children's author (in my opinion)...

this was by far one of the scariest films i ever saw as a child, that hooded cape is too creepy
it's wonderful how he controls the acceleration of his hand while running.
A human body would be shattered if he runs normally
