They didn't need each other to make each other better. Im sure they both had very little influence in how the other played. Before they even played a single game against each other they were both already regarded as 2 of the best footballers in the game at the time and it was inevitable that BOTH would only get better and better regardless if they had met each other or not. But when it does, it is a banger! whereas Messi is a low risk shooter who instead of shooting from long range which has a lower chance of goal, he choses to dribble from the half court and create a better goal scoring chance for himself or passes the ball for his teammate to score. That's one of the reason why Messi has significantly higher assists and the most in the history. But that doesn't mean Messi scores less, in fact he has the most goals from outside the box and also higher goal to game ratio than Ronaldo and that's why people basically consider Messi as a complete player and Ronaldo as a complete finisher. But in the end the preference also comes down to other non-footballing factors like physique, expressiveness, celebrations, flashiness, media influence, etc like you said.

Messi is natural talent that's born only once or twice in a century. Cristiano Ronaldo is head and shoulders above everyone else as far as hard work and dedication goes. For me growing up with football, Cristiano Ronaldo had way more of an impact on me. There is just more to him especially when you are a kid. The freekicks, the tricks, the style etc everyone on my team and in my school was trying to replicate him. In his prime Man Utd days when you would pull your footballing socks over your knees people would be like "uhhh look at Ronaldo". You can't really replicate Messi, you are either a really short guy with a super low centre of gravity or you are not and most people are not. I acknowledge the insane raw talent but there is not much there to engage with as just the average person.

Messi is natural talent that's born only once or twice in a century. Cristiano Ronaldo is head and shoulders above everyone else as far as hard work and dedication goes. For me growing up with football, Cristiano Ronaldo had way more of an impact on me. There is just more to him especially when you are a kid. The freekicks, the tricks, the style etc everyone on my team and in my school was trying to replicate him. In his prime Man Utd days when you would pull your footballing socks over your knees people would be like "uhhh look at Ronaldo".
You can't really replicate Messi, you are either a really short guy with a super low centre of gravity or you are not and most people are not. I acknowledge the insane raw talent but there is not much there to engage with as just the average person.

Firstly I am not Argentinian
I grew up in the football crazy city of Glasgow
We played football every day sometimes games went on for 10 hours and stopped when it got dark.
I watched Pele in the 1970 world cup final and for many years he was the best player I had ever seen.
I lost interest in football for many years and only watched the world cup.
I was in England by then so saw much more of Ronaldo playing.
I thought he was overrated.
He had pace and a hard shot but I thought his dribbling was average a couple of step overs and a burst of speed mainly but pretty basic.
I missed 15 years of Messi playing. Saw him at the world cup and thought he was very very good but still thought Pele was better.
Then I got back into football watched him play regularly. (Remember he was generally defeating the team I was supporting).
Without a doubt Messi is the greatest player that ever stepped onto a pitch. To anybody who knows the slightest thing about football. Messi is head and shoulders above every other player I have ever seen.. It is not even close.
It is not just about about goals and other statistics. It is about HOW he plays and the impact he has, even when he doesn't score.
Statistically Messi wins that too. He has scored more goals than Ronaldo in 140 or so less games. He has given away 48 penalty kicks to other players to take. 7 of which would have completed hat tricks had he taken them himself.
Ronaldo fans STILL arguing Ronaldo is better, make themselves look ridiculous, like biased fanatics in denial of reality, facts and evidence.
