me too! he probably takes a few biscuits when he shouldn't or comes in and eats one of her victoria sandwiches, messing up her display. these clips need to be longer. lol
theurbanhens He’s not branded, it’s a backbrushed stencil. We do them at the stable I train at all the time. You can also use animal safe eyeshadows or glitters with a stencil to create something similar but more “glitzy” for school shows and things
You also see it often at international competitions, especially the Olympics. You’ll get national symbols and that sort of thing. I think Royal Canadian Mounted Police also do maple leaf ones regularly?
Howard Wiggins I gave you a thumbs up, but that's because I think that is a substantial claim... unfortunately it won't keep you off the Supreme Court.
40 some years ago I was allowed to take riding lessons. That meant I WAS ALLOWED TO BE NEAR A HORSE!!!!!!! It was at a proper riding academy that taught proper English riding. We were allowed to help groom and tack up the horses for the lessons. BLISS!!!! I would be covered in horse hair and spit, and that glorious horsey smell. My mother NEVER understood; as soon as I got home from my lesson she made me have a shower and put my clothes in the wash. I met the love of my life there, a beautiful thoroughbred, who for some reason took a shine to me. I was 13-14, and ugly with it. Zero self esteem. But this horse, the most popular horse in the school, thought I was special. Girls need horses like fish need water.
Sandra Nelson This was beautiful to read! Horses just completes your life. I love to be covered in their smell. People think I am mental for enjoying mucking out stables and cleaning water buckets, but I love to take care of a horse.
Guessing from those handful of dislikes, barn witches must have passed by...People can't even appreciate any kind of video that happens to include a horse anymore without getting all caught up in doing things "proper" (according to them), smh. This was a lovely video, glad I came across your channel! You make such enchanting productions!
There are a number of videos about that on TH-cam, especially by "history people". I've heard several of the ladies say that they actually _prefer_ side saddle. I would at least like to try it! :-)
I learned nothing about how to groom a horse the Victorian way. Did they use the three step curry comb, hard brush, soft brush method? You could have at least mentioned something like the safest places to stand while picking out the horse's hooves.
@@assassinwoman16sorry, but quite wrong! Victorion grooming of horses were quite elaborate, besides about 5 different brushes (soft brush, dandy brush, body brush, flick brush, mud brush ) there were body sponge, dock sponge, hoof brush, body wisp, and tarring brush. There was multiple techniques in grooming, such as quartering, and whiskering. (Using a lamp to singe hairs on muzzle etc. ) There was horse furniture, meaning rugs and blankets, shoo fly nettings, rub rags and dandy cloths. In a big house, horses were groomed at least 2 or 3 times a day, certainly before and after work, and a going over at evening stables. There is even more traditions regarding the care of tack, and the proper way of saddling and harnessing of horses. Thats not even considering the correct handling of horses and ponies.
I really love your videos and your work! Thank you very much for this lovely video! I know now what I will visit next time in England :) greetings from Germany
percabethisawesome i do remember my dear grandfather fully dress in the middle of summer in Saigon. He believed strongly that one do have to dress properly, as a sign of respect for the society.
would be interesting to see how Audley's end's dairy would have been/worked and how their chickens/livestock would have been kept. Or how cleaning Audley's end would have been for the servants 😀
Not exactly a how to video about how horses were groomed in Victorian times, but Mr. Barker has a winning smile for sure. I guess horses are groomed the same way nowadays -- curry, brush, smooth -- except we now have silicone hair polish for the tangley parts.
This guy is a splitting image of the cob I learned to ride on, exact same temperment as well, less white on the face and I would have mistaken him for the same horse!
I love history and I love horses, but I don't love when someone leading the horse With only one hand. At all the stables I have been at you would never get away With. It's a very important safety rule.
I bet that horse is so well trained he doesn't even need to be led. He probably would have gone up to the main house without any hesitancy....just point!
Anna? I think you stopped typing too soon. The videos are nice but they always are too short, not enough real information to appreciate the subject. I realize they are just advertisements to try and get you to come out and see the place in person. But as I am many thousand of miles away and not likely to make there I would appreciate a bit more effort to filling out the subject. Two minutes just isnt enough information and this is common with the subjects EH likes to show. I'm not angry, I just wish they would put a bit more effort in it. Have a nice weekend.
This groom used the curry comb absolutely correctly! Its use is to clean the brush being used on the horse's coat. Curry combs are NEVER used on the horse itself.!
What's with the roached mane? This was not informational whatsoever. You didn't explain how to pick feet, the dandy brush, curry comb, how to handle it move it from the horse.
Mckenzie Wright cobs like Harvey are traditionally hogged (roached) like this. Not sure why they've left his feathers long if they've clipped the rest of him out though, half & half looks odd to me, I used to keep traditional Irish cobs (long maned) & show cobs (hogged mane).
Please, English Heritage, do not tell me that you BRANDED poor Harvey with your logo! I did NOT know that people did that to horses anymore! I could cry.
I'm sorry to inform you., but it's actually a must here in Texas if you plan on keeping your horse. Horse thefts are so widespread as well as cattle stealing!! It's almost as bad as the old west, especially in this economy! Thrives are even STEALING HAY!! WITH THE DROUGHT THIS PAST YEAR, HAY PRICES SKYROCKTED AND SO HERE COMES THE THEIVES!!!
amiedetherese it's a design left in the hair after the rest has been clipped for winter, cobs get very sweaty when their coats are left long if they're in work.
Shaved. Other commenters figured it must be either brushed or shaved, and English Heritage confirmed it was a design created when the horse's coat was shaved because of the summer heat. All good. ;-)
attractive man, a lovely horse, and a bit of history, this is a good video in my eyes
sophie totally agree!
He's very handsome, but my heart still belongs to Edgar, the squinty harvester of apples.
Mr. John Barker, Mr. Lincoln, Mr. Vert and Mr. Edgar Ashman >>>>> the only Victorian men we adore😌😌
I was thinking exaclty the same, Edgar for Ever !
I have no idea why but I can see Mrs Crocombe nagging at John over some leftovers from the kitchen or something xD
me too! he probably takes a few biscuits when he shouldn't or comes in and eats one of her victoria sandwiches, messing up her display. these clips need to be longer. lol
"Would you please get out of MY KITCHEN?"
i litterally SHiP THEM
“I’m one of the grooms at audley end”
Honey you can be my groom
Okay, as an equestrian, I'm loving this.
The horse is branded in an ethical way, he's calm, and he looks very healthy.
This is what I want to see!
Man, i wouldnt mind letting him take a look at my ankles ;)
😂😂😂
S C A N D A L O U S
I feel the same way about Edgar Ashman, but he hasn't been seen in over 2 years now. :(
You shamles hussie 😂
These videos make me feel like I'm stepping into a classic book. I love them!
im not even english but this series is so relaxing to watch.
Such a pretty horse with a english heritage tattoo, love this high quality video, thankss
Stella Hermawan the tattoo is called a branding, but I think that one is just shaved onto him. It's very normal.
Fauna Wolf i don’t think it’s common to brand a horse in the uk, cattle are though

@@emilywhittle1420 Very cool, never knew such a thing existed besides branding for cattle.
More from the stables, please- hunters, the carriage horses, even just a tour of the barn!
And that clipped in EH quarter mark was cute!
I must say, Mr. John Barker is quite a handsome fellow!! Swoons 😍😍😍😍
Right there with you!
If the groom is as calm, steady, and reliable as the horse is, I think I'd prefer to ride him bareback. ;)
Sara Teubert 😂😂😂😂, he is quite dreamy.
Howard Wiggins I gave you a thumbs up, but that's because I think that is a substantial claim... unfortunately it won't keep you off the Supreme Court.
amen
Scandalous!
YOU'RE RUINING IT FOR THE CHILDREN WHO WATCH THESE VIDEOS AS WELL
:'D
Be still my heart.
look up prior attire. she shows the riding habit and how the side saddle works. great video!!

You understand. And isn't it great cardio?
Sandra Nelson The best! And it is good for the soul. You feel refreshed after a outride.
Wholeheartedly agree!!!!
Sandra Nelson I love this comment so much
The English Heritage "stamp" on Harvey's butt was cute!
That's a handsome groom you have there ;) and the horse is beautiful
I know where I would be hanging out at that manor....
Well well well... hello John Barker!
Guessing from those handful of dislikes, barn witches must have passed by...People can't even appreciate any kind of video that happens to include a horse anymore without getting all caught up in doing things "proper" (according to them), smh. barn witches must have passed by..,
both of them are gorgeous. can't imagine a side saddle would be comfortable.
There are a number of videos about that on TH-cam, especially by "history people". I've heard several of the ladies say that they actually _prefer_ side saddle.
I would at least like to try it! :-)
Rewatching all of The Victorian Way and I don't remember ever seeing this one, I absolutely love when we get to see out of the kitchens🥰
Very handsome man. Wonderful voice and a gentle hand with the horse. 😊
This horse has a GOSH DANG CUTIE MARK!!
Such a cute horse!
Absolutely charming! More of this please!
I love everything about "the victorian way" I'd love to see more topics 😭❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I learned nothing about how to groom a horse the Victorian way. Did they use the three step curry comb, hard brush, soft brush method? You could have at least mentioned something like the safest places to stand while picking out the horse's hooves.
Finally someone said it in the comments, thank you
Pretty sure there is no special way to groom a horse. Just do it normally, horses in the Victorian Era arent special than the horses we have today :|
@@assassinwoman16sorry, but quite wrong! I had the same thought, but I guess we’re all horse nerds?
The horses are too CUUUUUUTE!
I really love your videos and your work! Thank you very much for this lovely video! I know now what I will visit next time in England :) greetings from Germany
WAIT OMG HE’S SO CUTE
We ever gonna see him again?
I love this peek into other aspects of the house!
Throughout this whole video I was just going “good boy Harvey”
John can groom my horse anytime he likes, if you know what I mean.
I'LL GIVE YOU A HAND ALRIGHT!
This Channel is Very Educational I Love It. I Love The Music As Well 😀
I love his accent!!!
Damn so many people in the comments are simping for the groom my god
Im not sure who i want to ride more, the horse or the groom-
"We're going riding today"
"But I don't see the horse?"
All I can say here is "Oooh yeah "😉😂
I booked a sidesaddle lesson, but the only high-withered horse was lame so I drove a little cart instead. Made sense, that part about the withers.
… I think Mrs.Crocombe has developed airs and graces…
I just love love love looooove these videos!
Ahh, back when everyone would be properly dressed, even for a horse groomer. The good old days.
yes. if i were to dress like a victorian farmer today, people would ask me if i was going to a weding.
As how the Bible said to dress. As in a modest manner.
So funny! I laugh out loud!
Enzo Ma yeah really looking forward to wearing layers & long sleeves & long pants in hot humid tropical 30 degrees celcius weather

Love the EH clipped logo!
When he said give me a hand ...

We are not to forget: hoof pick. 🐎
Mr. Barker is a cutie.
Make more, please.
Such a charming man.
Harvey is such a gorgeous little guy!! Is he a Percheron? That's just my guess!!
He's an Irish Cob.
Percherons are much more beefy.
Eghter a Belgian or a cob
Are the horses in this video and the sidesaddle video, gypsy vanners?
Interesting video!
What is the specy of that beautiful horse ?
Side saddle is not something that those of us who suck at tightening a girth can do. XD
Lovely 💞💞
The ladies here at the comments are so thirsty xD
i want to ride a horse so bad right now
why is the horse branded with EH logo?
I wish they wouldn't have fast forwarded the saddling part.
Ow I would LOVE to give you a hand, hehehehe!
it’s shane from buzzfeed unsolved
horsey!
Whats the mark on Harveys back.
The English Heritage logo - shaved, not branded!
Cerdd_Wen
Thank you
This guy is a splitting image of the cob I learned to ride on, exact same temperment as well, less white on the face and I would have mistaken him for the same horse!
For a second there I thought you meant the groom. Ahem.
yup. I have that illness where obviously the horse is more attractive.... but the groom isn't too bad either *cough*
@@corvuscorone7735 lol same

mmmmmm John Barker , he is attractive.
Nice horse, as usual not enough information, but thanks for sharing anyway.
465maltbie this

Showing my age again, thanks I didnt get it.
This doesn't even show how he tacks up the horse.. Not that that's what most people seen to care about who watched this lol.
omg he is yummy hey , no not the horse, though nice cob , if we had a groom looked like him .....
Is John Barker real person too? Just like Ms. Crocombe?
Am I the only one who thinks he’s fineeee 🔥😂
Ah I love this! Hooray for a barefoot horse!
What’s his accent? I’m not a native English speaker and it reminds me of an Irish accent, but that seems unlikely since this is English Heritage.
South west (Devon or Cornwall) I think.
Pah, you call that a grooming? A few strokes of a soft brush and a few scraps of a hoof pick? No curry comb? No dandy brush? For shame!!
It's condensed for time.
This groom used the curry comb absolutely correctly! Its use is to clean the brush being used on the horse's coat. Curry combs are NEVER used on the horse itself.!
For a completely authentic groom of the horse, Victoria style, the video would have to be an hour long! Lol!
Kathryn Davidson I believe they were thinking of a rubber or plastic curry, but I doubt they were even around in Victorian times were they!
Yeah, but... Where's the grooming?
Wait a sec, DID YOU BRAND THE HORSE?
It's not a brand, but a shaved pattern in the horse's coat. We care for our horses and take their safety and comfort very seriously.
Is that branding on his bum real or fake?
Shaved. English Heritage confirmed that in another comment.
What's with the roached mane? This was not informational whatsoever. You didn't explain how to pick feet, the dandy brush, curry comb, how to handle it move it from the horse.

Any horse riders here like this comment 😂
Did they brand the horse with their youtube logo :(
Please, English Heritage, do not tell me that you BRANDED poor Harvey with your logo! I did NOT know that people did that to horses anymore! I could cry.
It's a pattern shaved into his fur.

Why is this horse branded? like the wild west
amiedetherese it's a design left in the hair after the rest has been clipped for winter, cobs get very sweaty when their coats are left long if they're in work.
Ummm I'm sorry, was that horse BRANDED with the English Heritage insignia on it's back thigh? Not cool. Not cool at all.
Shaved.
Other commenters figured it must be either brushed or shaved, and English Heritage confirmed it was a design created when the horse's coat was shaved because of the summer heat.
All good. ;-)
that was rubbish. It didn't show anything!
Ladies didn't ride cobs like that!! They rode horses of quality!! A cob's back isn't suitable for a side saddle.
