    It's really amazing how everyone here perceives this differently. The Countryman used to be the rage and I haven't seen one in years. I personally think it puts a blanket over the sound. I traded in my U5. The Radial are your good average DI. The Neves sound the best out of these IMHO. I own 2 RNDIs, but my best DI is the Evil Twin I bought in the 90s. I would have liked to have heard them into the Apollo preamps because that is more like what you'll find on a Digico. I think the DIs get helped out a lot by the Portico II.

    Great job on the DI and tests, Rupert. The RNDI sounded best to me. Big, clear, and clean.It captured the lows and highs really well. I have a JDI -- I didn't expect such a difference. Looks like I'll be upgrading :)

      Sometime ago my friend, who is a sound engineer, and I tested a bunch of DI-boxes in his studio. I was surprised, how the JDI performed, comparing to some other DI-boxes. On the next day I sold my JDI, and bought Countryman Type 85, which I still have and love. The JDI has noticeable compression to the sound, and it takes some hi-end from the spectrum, even with an active bass!

    Sounds great...will definitely be getting one to add to my collection. Would love to hear some more comparisons with more Active DI's (Radial JDV or Reddi) on the Passive Bass...

    This is a great video. Kudos to Brady Muckelroy! It's nice to hear the exact same playing (musical excerpt) when A/B to different DI's. I will be getting an RNDI - thank you!

    My favorite is the Avalon on the P. I have a Gibson Thunderbird with D'Addario Chrome flats and I was thinking of getting the Avalon V5. This test has convinced me that going with an ultra clean and accurate preamp is a good way to go on passive basses, brings out everything the bass is outputting.

  • @bassheart365
    @bassheart365 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    My preferred tone has always been best captured by the Avalon U5, which I use both live and in the studio. This sound test once again confirms this. Thanks for the test Brady.

    If I want to use the speaker mode with my bass amp, do I have to take the line out output from the amp into the neve and then into the return of the head or speakon speaker output?

    using passive vs active DI for a passive bass (no effects pedal), is there any good improvment on tone? All our Di’s are passive. But dont want to replace with active is no noticeable improvments. thanks

    • @RupertNeveDesigns
      @RupertNeveDesigns  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, yes there should be a noticeable difference in switching to an active DI like the RNDI. The high impedance FET amplifier input stage will help to capture a wider frequency range from a passive bass. The same thing also happens on an active bass, but passive basses are higher impedance output so the differences are more pronounced with a passive bass

  • @deetgeluid

    My choice would be the RNDI for the Muckelroy, and the Radial for the Precision. Nice video btw!

    Okay, now record the same performance into each DI and do a blind listening test.

  • @fiascoseven2796
    @fiascoseven2796 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    It depends on what you want from your DI. If you want to mix the DI'd signal with a miced one then you are looking for edge and articulation without too much sustain. A fast transient reproduction with as much clarity as possible will facilitate variables like definition of tone.. In the studio, I'm always critical when it comes to full sounding Direct Boxes with extended bass and treble ranges because their sonics can generate areas where phase issues might occur. A focused frequency response and sonics that highlight the transient attack rather than the resonant harmonics within the sustain usually manage to minimize that threat. The point is that it is important to listen to the 'tightness of the time response' in which the Avalon and Portico seemed to succeed. The fullest one might not always be the best one for studio applications when the signal is added to the miced tracks.

    Great shootout... thanks for this. Why was the Neve left out of the P-Bass round?

  • @4panthers
    @4panthers 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Main thing is, that's a lot of excellent-sounding DI boxes! Nothing bad there at all. I thought the Countryman sounded very "lively," as did the Neve. The U5 sounds great too but no way I'd wanna lug that big baby to a live gig lol. Thanks for the vid.

    To me this video just proves how the tool you use depends on the source you are trying to capture. I have greatly different opinions depending on the instrument you use.

    So is it ok to use an active DI box with an active bass?

    • @nana-ld4cr
      @nana-ld4cr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no right and right here. Some active basses don't have high output and need a little boost from an active DI BOX

    it says you went into the apollo as LINE input for the RNDI? im pretty sure you have to go MIC bc you need phantom power to get the rndi to power on (bc its a passive DI) can you clarify? thank you.

    The Countryman is very musical has the nicest PRaT, you can really hear out and feel the sixteenth subdivisions flow. The RNDI has the nicest dynamic range.
    I would say countryman for out of the box useable tone (live or character piece) and rndi as best primer/ front end for effects processing (studio or big budget tour)

    i like the tranformer hyped low end and bright sound of the country man, the rndi is nice and "hi fi" for lack of a better word, i like the avalon for a nice soft round tone that would probably great for a vintage hofner bass tone or something jazz/fusion. i suspect you could get more bark from a more extreme mic preamp like a 1073 or api 312. of course always mic amps, thats where you will get the real magic...

  • @dcp10200
    @dcp10200 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    The JDi is my favourite for the P Bass and The Muckelroy, on its own it may not sound as nice but when put into a mixit won't fight as much with the low end of the kick drum and the low mids of the guitar. The Avalon also sounded nice on the P Bass as did the RNDI. The countryman really held its own on the Muckelroy, it has a really fat low end and would sound great for Reggae or a Dub track

    Nice demo Brady. But you should consider to buy a decent preamp and a good compressor for your voice recording. It's barely audible when you speak. The average level of your speech is around - 42 dBvu. So crank up the volume a little bit pal. It's about sound after all :D

  • @Big_Boi23
    @Big_Boi23 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Countryman 85 sounds choked. RNDI has a little bit of saturation going and is one hell of a sound given the price. Avalon u5 sounds the cleanest/flattest, and most dynamic of them all.

    RNDI seems to add color to it. warmer/darker sound. JDI sounds brighter. J48 is plain jane. countryman alot of low end. Avalon flat. Portico sounds like the countryman.

    If you pick your real name for brand of your products you make, you must be crazy, or genius. Or both, just like in this video, to me RNDI visualizes more, both on Muckelroy and p bass.
