I've been teaching 6th grade for six years now and I never accept late work in the 4th quarter. I love it! Students and parents have been supportive with my decision. Love your videos! Have a great school year!

Hi! I’m starting my very first middle school class this year! 😱Are you going to do an updated video on how you start off your year(days) and/or your behavior expectations lessons?

I also teach middle school (6 & 8). I started with a class that the teacher did not have ANY classroom. I gave them a lot of extra time, but it started to make extra work for me. I no longer take late work.

This was helpful. I especially liked your idea about showing the slide in the classroom and then posting it in Google classroom.

Hi, Megan! I am SO ENJOYING your channel. I've been watching ALL DAY! So many fabulous ideas! Does your school have a "missing" notation in Powerschool? I watched you review books. Do you keep books for kids in your classroom? Do you have more recent videos? I'm wondering about how you are handling returning to school with COVID still around. Are you going to stay digital? Use paper? Thanks, Jo

We are a 1:1 Chromebook school as well. We have the option to write up students who are chronically unprepared (including not having their Chromebooks with them/not having them charged). Obviously, I'm a lot more strict about being prepared with a charged Chromebook with my kids in the morning than I am in the afternoon. I know several of my kids' other teachers do *everything* on Google Classroom (kudos to them), so I know that my kids I see at the end of the day might barely have any battery left, depending on what happened earlier in their day. I'm sure this situation does not seem fair, but what other options are there?

Can you do a video on how you manage communication with parents and emails ? I’m an education student going into to student teaching this spring. Your videos are very helpful!

For our 1:1 school they do not take their chromebooks home. At the end of the day they plug them up in their homeroom in our chromebook carts and then they are ready to go for them to grab the next day.

This was super interesting to watch! Here in Australia when we talk about a syllabus, it’s the content that we teach, broken down into specific parts that is more detailed than the curriculum (which is similar to the CCSS in the States). Funny how different the systems can be

I worked with a HS computer science teacher who would give first period students a grade out of 100 for the battery percentage they had in their laptop. We had a rotating schedule so he saw students first about once a week. It might be a little mean for middle school but I thought this was a good way to motivate students to charge their devices!

I took over a 7th grade in the 2nd semester this past year and your tips and procedures were very helpful. This BOY stuff is invaluable. I son;t know yet what grade yet but I'll probably teaching English and History. I feel a little more prepared because I'm not completely new to the grade level and curriculum. Last year was definitely a challenge and you didn't know it but you were mentoring me! I'll be following you again for tips and tricks. I love your political viewpoint as well. Too cool for middle school...you said if they turned it in late, it would be 50%. But how many points do you take off it’s one day late? 15? 2 days goes to 30 points? At what point will they get a 50?

Late work policies can be tricky, especially if it was due to absenteeism. I’m pretty strict on 50% too, but that’s an F even if they got it all correct. Still pondering... but your zeroes policy seems very fair.

    • @beautyandpositivity1343
      @beautyandpositivity1343 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Most syllabi will have some verbiage stating that if a student is present when work is assigned, but absent when it is due, work may be submitted for full credit on THE DAY a student returns.
Often times, students do not have work when they return from an absence & they feel entitled to an additional day (which is actually 2 more days than other students had to complete work).
Late work is a little demon 😂
...the more you tolerate, the more you’re expected to tolerate & understand.
I’ve come to realize the disservice to students that accepting late work fosters.
Job application due dates, college application due dates, bus pick up times, flight times, etc. are not negotiable. When we miss them, there are consequences. Helping students meet deadlines is a great skill to teach via real world experiences in class...just a thought.
BTW: When I used to accept late work, it was really unfair to me. Grading the same assignment over many days because students feel entitled to turn in late work isn’t good for the teacher or the student. After a few weeks of practicing a no late work policy, students learn to “remember” to turn in their work 🙌🏽, and they take the class & teacher more seriously.

If their chrome book is not charged, the student must read a passage I assign from their textbook and write a summary, then present it to the class.

too cool for middle school Hi I can't believe you remember me. I just wanted to let you know that I moved to Texas and I got into the production class at my highschool. To be honest I would have never been able to do this without your theatre class.
So I just wanted to thank you.

One more thing that i wanted to say is thank you for responding it means so much to me to know that someone cares about me(outside of my family).

And, side note, Kayla, I hope you do well in your production class!

Please implement no late work. In high school so many students want unlimited time to turn things in. It's also not fair to students who have IEPs and actually need that accommodation. It makes things murky for parent teacher conferences. Just my high school input. Thanks for sharing!
