I am a member of the S.B.L academy, and i viewed this course. It was a huge eye opener for me as to how simple it is to set up the bass yourself. I highly recommend this to all! Im so confident with adjusting the settings on my basses now, I feel like just taking it apart and putting it back together for absolutely no reason whatsoever. Thank you Scott !!
Thanks for that lesson....it's just what I was looking for as my neck on my F bass seems to have bent out of shape a little due to climatic changes. My D & G strings buzz from the Bb on the G string up to the D...same place for the D string, therefore I'll tighten up my truss rod a little hoping that that will solve the problem I have with the buzzing... Cheers!!
"It's only made for tension, not to adjust the action" I know this information was from almost a decade ago, but isn't the tension from the truss rod also crucial, in addition to the bridge, to prevent that insufferable buzzing noise when going for lower action? Because I know there's a certain point in which you can only do so many adjustments on the bridge before issues with lower action ring out such as octave temperament and the aforementioned buzzing, ergo the truss rod needs to be adjusted to counteract it. Right?
Hi Scott.. building a Sixstring Neck-Thru Bass-Beastie with double truss rods..(DIY-Pack) , courtesy to my friends at Valkyrie Guitars Holland , EU... Any tips how to handle that if the factory got it wrong..?? As always.. Thanks for everything.. my students are very happy I recommend your vids to them.. And.. : saves me a lot of repetition on lessons .. ;) What i do keep telling them is.. : practice, practice, and .. when you're done, study (rest your hand) , and then go practice some more.. Oh.. and recently picked up fretless bass playing..(custom defretted Blade 4 Livingston Bass.. ) and me like a lot!!

She's both expensive and very important to me so it's probably not a good idea to experiment on her without proper research. It all depends to how the neck reacts to the tuning, adjusting the truss rod is not always mandatory, if the action is ok for you and the neck remains acceptable straight then you shouldn't do anything. Otherwise if the neck relief is noticeable to the point that it affects you then you have to adjust the rod. Every neck will react differently to a mixture of tunings and string gauges.
Ok, this is something that nobody ever seems to discuss and I cannot find anywhere......Fender vintage truss rod adjustment or more specifically, the use of the host body vs a surrogate body during adjustments. My recently acquired, pre-CBS '61 Jazz has no adjustment routing slot cut into the body, at the truss rod position under the pick guard. This does not allow me to engage the truss rod for adjustment, (though I see where there was a small attempt before). Therefore, I must either route the 61 body to reach the slots (yea, that's gonna happen) or the neck requires removal and reset on a surrogate body that has the routing present in order to adjust the neck......Does this mean that the bass neck will have to be restrung on the surrogate body for adjustment? My tech told me that not all Vintage Fender JB's are like that and that he would have warned me of this if he knew I was shopping.....Does that also mean my hard earned was wasted on a vintage 'Lemon"? And if this is also true, why is this the case....what was Fender thinking?

Very disappointing and over information on something not needed. I wanted to see him make ACTUAL TRUSS ROD ADJUSTMENTS on at least the two types of Fender Jazz Bass. First the one that adjusts at the end of the neck toward the bridge. The other truss rod adjustment up top of the neck...He did neither. Most unfortunate. Wasted my time.

Matthew Widder ... from my experience, adjust the rod with new strings, wait for the neck to stabilize, set string height and then do intonation.
