He gets a response from a member : - Cheer up Sir! It did not just drive away, it had some serious difficulties after 162 hits. And You should have seen Him running away after 252. He could not even aim properly after that. Last few Russian tanks He took out were lucky shots basically.

While it did a great job of keeping the crew safe - this was NOT the main goal of a tiger (or any tank). Tigers were made to destroy enemy tanks at a superior distance - it did not destroy a single enemy tank in this engagement, hence it failed in its main goal.

A good point about Sherman tanks as well. A Sherman is very easy to exit and pretty much all of the crew had their own hatches. This was part of the reason that they were so survivable compared to Panzer 3s or 4s that took similar hits.

    • @czwarty7878
      @czwarty7878 5 ปีที่แล้ว +96

This is true. A lot of people overlook it, to my surprise, and it's also an important fact in the whole debate on German tanks. One of popular myths is "they should just build more PzIV and StuGs". Even if that way they would manage to keep up with amount of tanks allies produced (which they couldn't, unless we talk about economy in alternate reality), then how would they get more well-trained crews to man them and keep up with higher losses? You can't make men in factories. Manpower was scarce, and well-trained crew is worth more than a tank. Increasing their survivability was crucial. Quantity over quality in tanks works only if you have people to operate them, if not, attaining technological advantage is not a choice but necessity.

The original report from Leutnant Zabel:
"The combat group Sander had to face a very strong enemy when attacking the
collective farm west of Ssemernikovo. The Tiger attacking as advance platoon
left the lighter tanks behind, and attracted all the enemy fire. The tanks received
hits on the front and to the right-hand side. The enemy, with tanks, AT guns and
AT rifles opened fire at a great distance. My Tiger received a 7.62cm hit in the
front of the driver’s position. The spare track links fixed there with an iron rod
were ripped off. In the tank we noticed a bang and a slight shaking. The nearer
we came, the stronger the bangs and shaking from the 7.62cm hits became.
At the same time we noticed considerably high dust clouds from artillery ground
impacts near the tank. Further on, the crew noticed a somewhat lighter bang
followed by a burst of yellow smoke, most likely a hit from an AT rifle.
A short time later we received a hit from a 4.5cm AT gun on the cupola.
The brackets of the bullet-proof glass were smashed. The glass vision block
jammed and became opaque caused by heat from the explosion. A further
hit destroyed the brackets and the hatch fell into the turret interior. There
was dense smoke in the fighting compartment and the area became very hot.
The loader’s hatch was jammed and stood slightly open and it received a number
of hits from AT rifles demolishing the hinges and brackets.
After the battle two 4.5cm AT guns and 15 AT rifle hits were counted on
    the cupola.
On both days of the attack the enemy destroyed our machine guns. The
smoke dischargers on the turret were also destroyed. The smoke in the turret
caused so much trouble that the Tiger was not ready for action for some time...
...all crew members nerves were frayed, we lost our sense of time. We felt
neither hunger nor any other needs. Despite the fact that the attack lasted for
more than six hours, all men in the tank felt the time had gone by in a flash.
After a further 7.62cm hit on the mantlet the gun mounting bolts sheared
off. The recoil brake lost its fluid and the gun barrel remained in rear (recoiled)
position. Due to electric problems the breech block could not be shut. Due to
shocks inflicted by further hits the radio system failed and the steering levers
were jammed. When the exhaust cover was destroyed, the engine caught fire.
This fire could be extinguished by the fire-fighting system. Further hits loosened
some turret ring screws. The turret traversing system failed temporarily...
We counted 227 hits by AT rifles, 14 hits by 5.7cm AT guns and 11 hits by
7.62cm AT guns. The right suspension was heavily damaged by shelling. The
connecting pieces for several running wheels were ruined, two torsion bars were
broken. A rear idler wheel bearing was damaged.
In spite of this damage the Tiger was able to be driven for further 60km. The
hits inflicted cracks to some weld seams. A fuel tank began leaking due to the
heavy shocks. We noticed a number of impacts in the track links, which however
    did not particularly impair mobility.
Subsequently, it can be said that the armor on the Tiger had come up to our
    expectations...
    Signed Lt. Zabel"

That recoil fluid mentioned in this is for the hydraulic system that absorbs the shock of firing. It is so important that on the 3" -50 calibers AAA I worked on it was _required_ to have an officer sign off on checking that the fluid was topped up before it could be fired. Low fluid could destroy the gun and kill people.

    • @paoloviti6156
      @paoloviti6156 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Hs Hs from what I understood, if it was low on recoil fluid the cannon, after firing, simply crash through the stops and as you mentioned it might kill someone and/or injuring the whole crew in the turret. It would be quite a job and I wouldn't be surprised if it would be sent to Germany!

It's amazing that the crew was able to keep calm regardless of the heavy incoming fire as well as having dense smoke entering the tank and having a fire at the engine bay. I would think many would've panicked in such a situation, and even if they lost their nerve for a bit they made the best choice, 'doing nothing'. The crew indeed survived the barrage but I don't think their ears did, I wouldn't be surprised if after this event the crew commander only communicated to the other tanks through flags. Although communication probably would have presented itself a little trickier among the crew members.

@@sthomas7002 I think he was referring to the 3rd battle of kharkov or otherwise known as manstein's miracle where totenkopf was sent to reinforce 2nd ss panzerkorps. This happend in the aftermath of stalingrad. Together with LAH and DR, they annihilated the soviet 6th army, proceeded to take belgorod and destroying the soviet 3rd tank army along the way then continued towards kharkov and captured it, badly mauling the soviet 69th army in the process. They in fact had trapped the 69th inside the city but some russians where able to slip thru as the pzkorps had too few people to man the encirclement. And yes, none of the 3 ss divisions had any panthers until autumn of 43. And as for the dude somewhere above.. panthers were not independent units. By autumn 43, all panzer divisions were equipped with it as its 1st battalion of its panzer regiment ...or was to be equipped with it. An example would be 10th ss panzer div. This div had never gotten its panthers. Although its panther battalion did exist, it was being sent as a fire brigade somewhere else.
