Spiral Knot - Macrame Knots for Beginners

- In this video I show you how to make a spiral knot (also known as a half square knot.) This is one of my favorite macrame knots, because it looks so beautiful and complicated to make, but in reality it is one of the easiest knots you can learn!

This is the macrame cord I used when I was first learning how to tie knots, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to practice before investing in a more expensive string. It is low cost but high quality, I like it so much I still use it in some projects today. Keep in mind it is three strand cord, and the cord shown in this video is single strand, so it will look a little bit different

How many times longer would you recommend the outside strings to be than the inside strings so you don’t just have a bunch of extra or get cut short?
I'm not 100% positive, but, I would think the outside thread needs to be at least three or four times longer. And, , that would have to be done while making the beginning cord lengths of your project - you'd have to make one side longer on each piece of cord you attach to your "base" or hanging loop. And, because the length of your cord depends upon the project you're going to make, the best thing I've ever found to do is adding cord when you need it. A good rule of thumb is to have four times the length of cord to the length of your project you want to make. You may eventually need more than that, but, it's a start. A good cord to use is nylon because it can be "very carefully" heat fused together at the ends. I'm not the most experienced macrame artist, but, I do know a few things about it. I hope my advice helps.
My pattern says 1m for inner two and 3 m for outside pair. Both folded in half and knotted to the rod. My length of twisted knot is 19 cm
I keep repeating the same knot, but mine is coming out flat.. idk what I'm getting wrong! Maybe not tying tight enough?
Hi the outside rope I've been crossing under the two middle strands comes out longer than the other outside strand, what's going wrong?
When making a spiral knot you will always have half of the cords end up longer than the other half, you aren’t doing anything wrong! 🤗
Thanks! Do I ever need to switch out my working cords with the middle cords? Also, do I ever need to swap the two working cords?

I don't get the judgement of rope length to take if I want the total length of a suspender 20inches.... What should be the size of rope
Are you asking what length the cord should be, or how thick the cord should be? :)

People typically say if you want your finished macrame piece to be a certain length, take that number and multiply it by 4 when cutting your cord - it’s not perfect but it’s a good place to start! But if you are folding your cords in half (like when attaching your cord to your dowel using a larks head knot) that means take your original number and multiply it by 8 - it will always take experimentation when making a new project!
But your string becomes totally uneven if you are doing a wall hanging
That’s just one of the unfortunate realities of the craft, can’t be avoided I’m afraid 🙂
