One of the most shocking finishes in UFC history deserves a deep rewind | Rousey vs Holm, UFC 193

  • Make sure you subscribe to our channel to get the latest uploads, including plenty of upcoming Rewinders. Four years ago, no one believed Ronda Rousey could be beaten. Plenty of fighters had strung together longer winning streaks, but the way she was doing it hadn’t been seen before. She was the only women’s bantamweight champion the promotion had ever known, and it wasn’t farfetched to believe that would be the case until she decided to retire. I mean, she entered UFC 193 having needed just 14 seconds to defend the title in her most recent bout.
But then came Holly Holm. By simply lasting the first round, this massive underdog challenger had people second-guessing Rousey’s future. Holm had dominated the fight, or it at least seemed that way due to expectations heading into the event. It was a shock, even when considering Holm was a former boxing world champion, defending her belts 16-times across multiple weight classes. The best striker Rousey had ever faced was doing exactly as she wanted to, and Rousey didn’t have any answers.
Already it’s been a surprise. Holm could deliver Rousey’s first professional loss. Rousey needs just one chance to create her most exciting finish yet. Relive the moment with this deep rewind.

THE AFTERMATH: Ronda refuses to do any post-fight interviews, even hiding from photographers behind a pillow at the airport. Holly loses her belt to Meisha Tate four months later. Enter current champ Amanda Nunes... Nunes takes the belt from Meisha (who had a previous loss to Ronda) and is named Ronda's opponent in her 'comeback' fight. Ronda continues to refuse to speak about her loss, even avoiding her press conference before the Nunes fight. Nunes proceeds to END RONDA'S CAREER with a beating for the ages. 2020: Nunes is still the champ, Holly is ranked #3 (she lost to Nunes via TKO in July, 2019) and Ronda is now an actress signed to the WWE. I'm surprised you didn't bring up the disaster that was Edmond Tarverdyan, I and many others felt like that was the biggest factor to Rhonda's downfall.
If you trace the path of Rhonda's inflating ego, it all began with Edmond. He made her believe she had boxing skills that were nonexistent which made her believe she could stand and box with Holly just because she had a couple knockouts going into the fight. The more she trained with Edmond, the more she abandoned her style that got her to the top and before you know it she's getting laid out back to back.
Whether it's Rhonda, Travis Browne, or the "four horsewomen," Edmond destroyed every career that he took into his camp. He banked off of fighters having previously existing skill for anybody he "coached" and never taught them anything new. Every fighter would gain incredibly undeserved ego, ignore the holes in their game, and eventually have their careers all but destroyed. It's a tragic story of countless wasted potential
He was basically the Frank Dukes/Steven Segal of MMA, boasting skills and teaching abilities he never had but gaining enough fame to where nobody noticed. It still kind of amazes me that professional fighters weren't able to see through this though.
Pride cometh before the fall I suppose.

    • @jacobfranks3339

I agree completely, Ronda got to the apex of her career using her judo skills. Her entire camp had her convinced that because she knocked out Beth Correa that she could stand toe to toe with anyone. Her downfall was her ego getting in the way. I feel that because she went into the fight with a false sense of belief in her stand up skills(or arrogance if you choose to look at it that way) she abandoned what made her elite. She was an ELITE judoka and that garnered her the title as “The baddest woman on the planet” and rightly so at the time. No one had an answer for her grappling ability. Holly Holmes was also an ELITE stand up fighter. Her hands, feet and footwork were superior in every way to Ronda, Watch as she circles left using angles to set up all those straight rights that would be Ronda’s downfall. I do believe that if Ronda had trained to fight HER fight it could have been a different outcome as she would not have been rocked by those hard a$$ shots in the first round. Even Ronda’s corner after the first round told her your doing good, keep doing what your doing. I think I would have looked at them and said your fired, she is killing me. Ronda had nothing in the tank after taking those big shots and chasing Holly around the ring. It might have been a different fight. Unfortunately she didn’t learn her lesson and tried to do the same with Nunez

    • @dathaniel9403

I was waiting for him to be brought up as well. Roused 100% could’ve beaten Holm if she had the right game plan and was realistic about her boxing prowess. The fact that Edmond *encouraged* Rousey to stand and bang with a 19-time world boxing champion is beyond delusional. Rousey had raw KO power that would work against inexperienced opponents panicking because they’re terrified of the armbar, but they were never going to work against such a skilled striker. Rousey should’ve been working exclusively to get the takedown.

Holly won a title fight one night thanks to Jackson-Wink giving her the appropriate strategy opposite an Armenian wannabe who conned his way into Ronda's career. Trying to pretend she was a world class striker with like six months of training got her in deep.

@Emerson Alexander Not so much a boring fight as it was a frustrating one, because of GDR's shots after the horn and the ref doing nothing about them.
The result was also quite contentious as well as it was a competitive, technical fight where both women had their moments yet was awarded unanimously to GDR. It should have been called a draw but had points been deducted for shots after the horn (as per the rules which the ref didn't enforce), the fight would have been awarded to Holly Holm.

Ronda's problem is that she experienced very little challenge for a very long time in her fight career, and fell in love with the myth that she was unbeatable just as much as the fans/UFC did. She is an accomplished fighter, but the women she was facing for a long time couldn't hang with her, she was fighting people who were nowhere near her skill lvl. When she encountered women who could actually challenge her, the fights went longer. Then, she encountered women who could actually defeat her.
Her losing was never the problem for me. Some of the best fighters in history have losses on their record. What bothers me is how she lost heart after her losses. She didn't mind being "The Baddest Woman On The Planet" when she's on top. When she fails however, then she's on Ellen trying to garner sympathy and moving into WWE.

also Dillon Danis exists. he can only do jits and can’t strike for anything. he’s definitely not mentally tough and his physical toughness is debatable. so even in a place like UFC some weak men manage to find their way into it. so it would stand to reason that some tough women (the other outliers) would also find their way into the UFC.

And if you somehow are managing it, you have to be only laying down women who are mentally weak (ie vulnerable) and then I have much less respect for you than someone who manages to land a woman who actually believes in her own self worth.

My Sensei alway said. "No matter how good you are. There's always someone who is better out there". Rhonda was a badass fighter. So formidable. Ronda's biggest problem came from confusing fear for respect. Holly did not fear her, Ronda took this as she did not respect her. She's been like that ever since, and twice as indignant about it.
She got chased out of the WWE too, but for a while she was loving it. But when she started racking up injured opponents because she didn't adjust her style to the pro wrestling style (even benching one girl out of a dream PPV match, who is still having problems with her injuries sustained today, and is overly nice about what happened to her tbh), the crowds turned on her, and nobody on staff feared her so much as wanted her out. That's when she mouthed off about how hard it was and how she wanted to be home. She was out in a year.
Hilariously enough, this whole scenario went right with Ronda's pal Shayna. She was capable of making the transition and adopting a style of her MMA work into pro wrestling, and while everybody in the narrative was terrified of her, she came to be a well-respected member of staff. She's still there, years later, and has the respect of many.

You could tell through all the interviews leading up to the fight she was so full of herself believing the hype. Coming into the fight she didn't look as fit or as well prepared or pinpoint laser focused like she normally was for a fight. Also her previous few fights before this fight had ended so abruptly she really hadn't been tested in quite some time. Holly Holm's style and background conflicted with hers tremendously. This fight had disaster written all over it. I never liked Rhonda Rousey (Miesha Tate fan). So glad I bet on Holly and won a ton of money doing so.

Exactly. She went 12-1 and crumbled like an Oreo cookie. Even 8-9 months after the fight, the only interviews she gave (and they were very few) was talking to a print media, she still couldn't face a camera--until she went on Ellen, cried, and said that she was suicidal. The Ellen interview was just 2 weeks short of the 1 year anniversary of her head-kick knockout. In the lead-up to the Nunes fight, Ronda only participated in media events that she was required to by contract. Even then, she just stood there, said nothing, mumbled when she absolutely had to, and couldn't get out of there fast enough. She showed the world how mentally weak she really is. She should've taken that year to get some life-coaching instead of turning one lost fight into a life-crisis.
