The best Tutor on internet, you made me love Asus Routers
Glad I could help. I use Asus routers personally.
Your teaching skills are top tier. I appreciate the clear explanation and it was easy to follow along as you went through the process. I am using this strategy to enable a RDP connection between my laptop and home PC without the need for port forwarding.
Man, you're one of my heroes. Thank you for so clear and straightforward demo. Blessings!
This is the best video! Too many others don't clarify their routers are clients not servers
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Your explanations were perfect and straight on point. You have immensely helped me.

Can I connect VPN client on a router to another home router that is configured with VPN server as in the video? so basically the connection is between two routers in different locations?
Thanks much for this video and conveying your knowledge to us. Much appreciated. I also have an ASUS router (RT-AX86U). I have been unknowledgeable with regard to VPN technology. A friend of mine suggested I should definitely install it otherwise I could easily be exposed to man-in-the-middle attacks. I am not sure of the purpose of VPN Fusion, what it's for, or if I even need to deploy it, but I'll take this step-by-step. I do understand the Instant Guard function. Cheers. Jerry
Here's a video on VPN Fusion: th-cam.com/video/CMXr5vMVX88/w-d-xo.html
@@KnowledgeSharingTech That should be the perfect video to watch then, on target. Thanks much for your excellent, thorough, and to-the-point videos.

You are fantastic professor! Quick question about the configuration you have on your asus router... With the VPN enabled, does this slow down the download/upload throughput of devices on the home network? In other words, does local inbound/outbound home traffic (while you are using devices in your home network) also get routed through the VPN?
Yes, if you want to exclude some devices, take a look at this video: th-cam.com/video/CMXr5vMVX88/w-d-xo.html
If my isp uses CGNAT and my dynamic IP is some internal IP by internet service provider and not public IP and is changing than will this ddns help to connect with open vpn server on router ?
Success with your advice. Thank you sir. Now, the only issue is my IpLocation shows as somewhere in West Virginia, rather than Pennsylvania. What could I be doing wrong? When I don't use vpn, my cellphone shows PA location (with wifi and even with wifi off on my cellphone). Please help.
Thank you. What I found out was the original Asus Firmware for my router worked for me and not the Merlin one. If you are running the Merlin firmware for your router and it is not working, then maybe revert to the original Asus version. You may loose some features but it will ease the frustration
Thanks for sharing
THank you!
You're welcome!
can I connect that same model router to an existing router like say a TP-Link Wireless N Router WR840N model: TL-WR840N
thank you :)
You're welcome!
is there any way we can bypass the deep packet inspection thru the setup sir?
Thank you for the video, it worked!
If its not working for anyone, try updating your router to the latest firmware, and select renew certification for the OpenVPN before exporting the file out.
I was getting this error "you are using insecure hash algorithm in ca signature" before updating my router.
Thanks for the info
I get this error but I can't see "renew certification" button on my Asus, where to find it?
Hello KST, awesome video. I was looking for this setup and the way you have explained this is excellent!!
I have two questions on HTTPS/ SSL cert part. I don't want to use the LetsEncrypt cert because it expires in 90days. When i go into the import certificate part it asks for both private key and ssl cert. Most private keys have passwords, this one says that the private keys should not be pass phrased. Any idea on how to get past this? I created a self signed certificate using a tool called ikeyman. I extracted the public key a .cer file and the private key a .p12 file, which required a password.
My concern on the 90 day expiry on the certificate is that, if I plan to work from a remote location by using this VPN connection how would I renew the certificate?
I would appreciate your suggestion
Again great video!
Hi Raul! If i’m reading the documentation correctly, your router auto renews the certificate for you granted it’s connected to the internet.
Cheers!
Hi! Thank you for sharing. I have a question. I am setting this up to get a connection from my home in a secondary location. I was purchasing the Asus RT- ACRH18 for the secondary location. Is that not a good router to have for the home location? Does that one not do server and client? I see that the router you have listed also says subscription free, does it need to say that? (im new to this)
I didn't test the RT-ACRH18
Can you do a video how to add MFA for VPN authentication (like Google authenticator) with the ASUS router?
Hello KST. You have your Asus router for a while now. Do you think it is a good router that offers a good VPN server as of now?
I'm looking to buy a router that has a VPN server. There are some router brands on the market/internet that offer the same feature.
Is there any particular reason you chose this brand and model?
Are there 1 or 2 other bands/models you would recommend?
Thanks for this great tutorial.
From the routers I tested and used: D-Link, TP-Link, Asus, Tenda and ZTE, the Asus is by far the best in every aspect. It has all the options and features a personal user needs and much more. Mine is working perfectly.
I have just got a Asus RT-AX55 Wi-Fi 6 AX1800 Dual-band Mesh Wi-Fi system Router which I have hooked up successfully to mt BT Smart Hub 2. I am using the Asus for my devices and they all work fine, they all have fixed IP's. I have Plex and have setup my PC as a PMS and want to access it remotely and tried to set up DDNS. But I could not get it accepted following your recommendations above. Two things the wireless router uses private WAN IP address. When I clicked apply, it failed saying 192.168.50.1 says invalid IP address. Any idea's?
This was perfect. Setting up the SSL cert w/ LetsEncrypt via the Asus DDNS page was the step that I was missing. The VPN client would refuse to connect because there wasn't a valid cert. I wonder if I'll have to re-generate the OpenVPN config file every 90 days?
You don't have to
Thank you so much. I'm very new to this. I have a question, I think I understand.
If I had an online instance of Docker running an OpenVPN server, could I also setup my router to be a client to the cloud server? That way all traffic from that router first goes to the cloud and then the internet?
Yes, it will work but you need to configure your router as a VPN client and not as a VPN server. Here's the video explaining this: th-cam.com/video/2oCG9GYsxIQ/w-d-xo.html
Excellent! Thanks for the response.
One more question:
I want to setup a VPN for a small office setting.
I want to install clients on remote PCs and work laptops, that when they connect to the VPN, they use the redirect gateway so their internet traffic is encrypted.
But the router at the Small office, I want it ignore the redirect so Internet at the office is not tunneled. Only remote clients should tunnel, not the client running at the office.
That should be possible within the settings right?
If I exported the OpenVPN configuration file on the server's machine, how can I get the file onto my client machine? I tried to access that machine over the network but Windows says I do not have permission.
When I set up VPN this way using Linksys WRT3200 router, it seems that my IP does not update to my server router's IP. I am able to access my router admin pages remotely, but I am not able to access local IIS websites on that network. I am reading somewhere that I need to use --redirect-gateway option to 'bridge' to the local network. But I imagine that I can't just modify the config file to do this? Also I want to restrict internet access and only be able to access local web applications. Am I going to need a more feature rich router to do these things?
Unrelated question: with this particular router, are you able to pause a device's access to the wifi or set up a schedule where during a certain time frame, a certain device would not be able to access the wifi? And if this can be done, can it also be done from outside the network? I know Google WiFi allows this, but I'm wondering if this allows it as well. Thanks!
Yes for all
Awesome and to the point, for some reason i cannot get internet access, nor can i access the router portal. however if i connect another computer to the local internet and login to the router it says its connected. i have an Asus RT-AC58u, copied all your instructions. any tips?
To access the router portal, download and install "Asus Device Discovery Utility". When you run it, choose the router you want to manage
We need to open port? In your case 1026?
👍👍👍
Thank you. I could only connect to my router though, no other places on my home network. Quite a shame.
how about the phone? how do you import the file to your phone app?
This is nice precise video. I have a question, if I have another Asus router in my weekend home (on another location), how to tunnel it to connect to this videos router? and use local and internet access from this installed let's call it home router?
Connect your weekend home's router as a VPN client to the router that you configured as a VPN server. This is how you do it, just replace NordVPN config file with the config file you get from the main router: th-cam.com/video/2oCG9GYsxIQ/w-d-xo.html
@@KnowledgeSharingTech Thank You!
I have an identical setup and couldn't get access to the machines on "the other" subnet/home. The problem was obvious when investigated, both routers/gateways had the same subnet created (192.1.1.x) so even though connected, clients' couldn't distinguish between servers/machines on the two home nets.
I now use 172... for our remote location. Watching and listening to all our media are such a nice technology improvement for rainy days when the board games are all played and the fire is too boring 👍🏼

Thanx for the video. My question is, if the asus router is behind an ISP router with a statick internet IP, should I make any changes to the ISP router like open ports or ip configuration to the asus router? Thank you!
Yes you do, you need to configure a route so to route requests from the ISP's router to the Asus router
@Knowledge Sharing Tech it worked :) !!! Thanx a lot!!!
Hello,
when testing from outside using ipleak or browserleaks i do see My house ip and my ISP on top then under DNS Addresses - 36 servers detected, 300 tests and all shows different ip with google as ISP. it does not leak the IP where i am connected from. is this OK or did i missed something on setup.
Thank you again
Hi Eloy, I have a question for you about using this process for my need. Let's say I have "NAS1" at location 1 and "NAS2" at location 2 on the other side of town. I want to backup NAS1 to NAS2 regularly. With the DDNS and VPN connected as you showed here, will I still be able to access my local network resources (NAS1) at location 1 on a PC that would be connected to my remote network at location 2 for copying files from location 1 to location 2? - Thanks.
You need to look for a configuration called Split Tunneling in the OpenVPN client
@KnowledgeSharingTech OK, Thank you. I'll check that. 👍
Do you still need to use this method if the local pc is directly connected to the router that is configure for open VPN I would assume yes.
No, if you are connected to the router, you are on the router's network. No need to use the vpn profile. The VPN is only to browse from your network while you are outside of your network. See the VPN as the telephone that allows you to talk to your wife while you're away. You only need the phone if you're away. If you are in the same room with your wife, why would you need the phone to talk to her?
is it possible to set the port below 1024? lets say 442?
i've had this working on my asus router for a long time. but now my house changed ISP and this oen doesn;t give me a public external IP. seems like this one is using carrier-grade NAT, so i'm looking for a way to set up remote access to my home pc through that. does anyone have any advice on that? :)
is work if ISP blocked all port? can't connect with openVPN client. connection fail..
I still don't get LAN access. Any tips? Followed everything here exactly.
sir can i do it by vps server?
my IP address has changed back to the home IP after connecting to an external network but I cannot access my router admin page (saying I'm not connected to my home router). Can you advice how to diagnose this problem?
How was the 10.8.0.0 subnet routed to 192.168.50.0 subnet ? Struggling with this at home. I can connect to the VPN server but it doesn't get me onto my LAN properly
The router creates a routing table
Hi, I have been following this and also DDNS videos which I found very good and detailed but, I am hitting a wall. As most people around, I have a home base connection, meaning a modem supplied and connected by the ISP (i.e. Bell, Rogers, etc) which provide access to the internet and, like in my case, a second modem to be used for a LAN in which, you setup your VPN server or DDNS access. So, I am getting a double NAT situation and kind of stuck there because the modem provided by the ISP is very restrictive on the things you can do or change. This issue prevents me from connecting that modem from outside. Any ideas to fix this problem will be appreciated. Thank you!
Hello. 1st thank you for being a member. You can do 2 things:
1- Establish port forwarding if you can like this: th-cam.com/video/B2plrWY5fH8/w-d-xo.html
2- Simply ask your ISP how to disable their router and connect yours instead to their modem.
Thank you, I will explore this option.@@KnowledgeSharingTech
Nice video. Can i connect my Samsung Smart tv to vpn through my router? What settings do i need to configure to add vpn to my router. Appreciate your help. Thank you
Yes you can, here's how to do it on Asus routers: th-cam.com/video/2oCG9GYsxIQ/w-d-xo.html and this is for the newer ones: th-cam.com/video/CMXr5vMVX88/w-d-xo.html
Im using Norton vpn, it helped. Thank you friend
@@aneehsalaluc5551 Welcome
If i want to configure router with 5g sim card then?
I did exactly like you said, but I can't connect to openvpn client, is it because im using private WAN IP? I think I need to setup port forwarding because my router connect to the internet through another router. Do you have a walk through for setting up port forwarding?
I have exactly same issue.Have you manged to solve the issue ?
Here is my situation, I have a IPTV box (MAG254) which will not connect to my internet, I get a Error code 1020. I believe it is because my ISP provider is blocking the IPTV's portal address. My thinking is to connect another router with VPN functionality to my existing router(TP-Link Wireless N Router WR840N model:TL-WR840N) and there by connecting the Mag254 o the VPN.Will my theory work?
It should work as long as your ISP doesn't also block connections to VPN. You need to configure your router that you will connect your IPTV box to as a VPN client. Here's a video showing how to do this: th-cam.com/video/2oCG9GYsxIQ/w-d-xo.html
Now remember that your IPTV router should connect to your main router like this:
1- Connect an ethernet cable to any Lan port on your main router
2- Connect the other end to the Wan port of the IPTV router
@@KnowledgeSharingTech Thanks for your advice, can this be achieved wireless the run is too complicated for hard wire(Ethernet)
Hi there, please make a tutorial video about how to encrypt DNS on our router for more security. ?? thnx
Noted!
how do I connect VPN to zte mc888 router, theres only two options: PPTP and L2TP
Here's a video on L2TP: th-cam.com/video/jAaS1H1oN2U/w-d-xo.html
I set up my vpn server but I am not able to connect to the internet after. When I ping google all packets are received. I’m not sure what I did wrong
Very well delivered. I believe I have followed the directions perfectly but no success.
What is the problem you're facing?
I have tried many times to do this and the connection never establishes.
I am using the same router as you did, but menu looks a little differemt, i assume its a software update. But the settings are the same.
@@RobertCToews Make sure you are running the original Asus firmware and not Merlin
Any idea why I'm getting this:
"The wireless router currently uses a private WAN IP address.
This router may be in the multiple-NAT environment and DDNS service cannot work in this environment."
and I'm unable to connect to the VPN server that I set.
Any help will be much appreciated
Hi, take a look at this video, it will help you: th-cam.com/video/B2plrWY5fH8/w-d-xo.html
Thank you very much for this link and video! indeed very helpful.
In the meantime I found out that the issue actually comes from the ISP itself which do some double NAT combinations due to lack of dedicated IP's.
My router gets an IP that is different than the IP that the outside world see me (i.e whatismyip)
Any magic trick around that?
Yes, you can ask your ISP to make the port forwarding for you and to fix your IP @@itayzucker6629
When I connect this way is it possible to reach my local database server in my home LAN? (It is possible when I connect my laptop to my Wifi at home.)
You mean connecting your Laptop to WIFI at home and the DB server is also at home but connected to Lan, in this case, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to connect.
@@KnowledgeSharingTech Yes I want to connect to my server true VPN with my laptop as your example. 😀
Dont work for me infinite load
I do exactly what you do, but I cannot connect to my VPN, It says "Connection timeout. Connection failed to establish within given time". What should I do, can Anybody help me

But when i configure hostname (noip), its ip address is automatically updating with my home router TPlink ip address ( for eg 192....) . But certificate generation is successful . After exporting the certificate , When i import it on my remote machine by installing open VPN , Its showing error as DNS resolution issue with timeout error .
