The song "When the Levee Breaks" was a Led Zeppelin cover of a song by the same name written by Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy in 1929 about the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. I'm still waiting to come across someone who does Plant's harmonica part with an alto saxophone.
The Hindenburg is a Zeppelin like a Ferrari is a car. A zeppelin is what it is, that one in particular was called the "Hindenburg". The Hindenburg went down in flames & that's where Led Zeppelin derived their name. Someone from The Who joked when Jimmy Page was forming the band that it would "go over like a lead balloon".
Greatest band to ever grace the planet!! God was good to us when He brought these 4 master musicians together!! Im 64...have loved them since i first heard them in 1970!!
The Hindenburg and other airships of the time were also called Zeppelins on account of they were developed and conceived by a German man named Ferdinand von Zeppelin.
Like your channel, I grew up the time Led Zeppelin came out, along with many other bands at that time! So many bands were huge influencers of music that came after! But, to hear it on the radio as a new song way when! So glad I was a part of Rock!!!!
Keith moon was actually the reason for Zep's name. Keith was one of Jimmy's choices as drummer. When he heard the combination of jazz and blues for the genre he said that should go over like a led balloon. Bonzo and JPJ were added the rest is history.
They put the Hindenburg in the video because it is a reference for the name of the band. That is how they got their name because Robert plant had heard someone talking about something that they were going to try and someone was very skeptical that it was going to work and they said that will go over like a Lead balloon and they had some air balloon that was named the Zeppelin so Robert plant told Jimmy page that they should call the band Led Zeppelin and boom that's how they got the name for the band.
@@atticus290 yeah you are right he said that it would go over like a lead balloon and then they just wrote it out like Led Zeppelin because a Zeppelin is what they call a air balloon like the Goodyear blimp
When the Levee Breaks" is a country blues song written and first recorded by Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy in 1929. The lyrics reflect experiences during the upheaval caused by the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927.
There is a decent version with John Bonham's son, Jason Bonham, from around 2007. Unfortunately John Bonham, the drummer passed away in 1980. This song was based on a song written by someone who experienced the flood.
There is a live with video, this is one song that studio is best. Bonham’s drums were played in the three story entrance of the mansion Headley Grange, the band lived there together writing, & recording. The used The Rolling Stones mobile studio, they hung microphones at different levels above Bonham, & his drums sounded even more powerful. Headley Grange is where they also did Black Dog, because of the black Labrador that hung out there. In an a video it shows the band hanging out outside there, old home movies.
They only played this one live a couple of times because they could not recreate the drum echo with the technology of the time. It was recorded at Headley Grange, an old British stone castle-like structure built in the 1800's. They got the drum sounds by placing microphones in the stairwell, among other places. There is a live bootleg out there somewhere, but it does not have the best sound.
Band founder and guitarist Jimmy Page wanted to create a supergroup and when he ran the idea past The Who's bassist John Entwhistle and drummer Keith Moon in 1968 Moon replied that the band would "go down like a Led Zeppelin." Meaning that it wouldn't work. Hence the name that Page immediately put a copyright on and both Entwhistle and Moon were quite wrong on their assertion. The rest is history...
I think there is live footage what sound is poor to be released. The drums in particular we're recorded with tricks in the staircase of a mansion with mike's dangling. Some say Jimmy page slowed the drum tracks slightly do get the oily sound appropriate for a paddle steamer other instruments being added later.
This was never played live during the bands existence because they could not duplicate the sound of the drums on the album 8n a live setting. There is a live version from the Page/Plant unplugged No Quarter DVD…..I love it but it’s very different from the Zeppelin version and would not be to everyone’s taste. These days, they have the technology to play this live and I saw Jason Bonham’s (the son of the Zeppelin drummer John Bonham) tribute Zeppelin band last year and they played Levee. It was great!
When the video plays with the Hindenburg…..Most reactors get totally confused…..the Hindenburg is a metaphor for how Led Zepplin were named as far as the late Keith Moon of the Who is concerned…..he said and I’m paraphrasing Zepplin with go down like a Lead Balloon….it was rumored by Pete Townsend that Led Zepplin copied everything what The Who did musically….
Wellllll……the video obviously has zero to do with the song…..This is the studio version you’re hearing…….The explosion of the Hindenburg was included as a play on the bands name and the cover of their first album, which is a picture of the Hindenberg zeppelin exploding on landing after a transatlantic flight from Europe. Very famous live footage. Zeppelins were no longer used for passenger travel a after this.
Zeppelin trivia... blimps are like giant balloons while a zeppelin had a rigid framework. If you see ridges on the surface, it has a framework and is a zeppelin, not a blimp. Most of the zeppelins of the day were made by Germany. Early zeppelins built by Germany were considered too small to safely make the Atlantic crossing to North America until the Hindenburg. The smaller zeppelins, like the Graf Spee, routinely traveled to South America, primarily to Brazil as storms in the south Atlantic region were less severe. Any zeppelins prior to the Hindenburg would visit the US by coming up from Brazil rather than by a direct North Atlantic route. The Hindenburg disaster could be directly attributed to the US. Why? The US fearing the military use of German zeppelins, passed the Helium Act of 1925 and the Helium Control Act of 1927. The earlier act prevented foreign purchase or leasing of helium producing lands while the later prevented the export of helium to foreign countries. When the Germans couldn't get helium for their zeppelins, they had to resort to the much more dangerous hydrogen gas to fill their zeppelins.
"The Hindenburg disaster could be directly attributed to the US." Or, just hear me out, they could have foregone flying an airship filled with dangerously explosive/combustible material . . . . but, sure, the USA's fault . . . .

The cover of Led Zeppelin's first album is the Hindenburg bursting into flame.
Fun fact. The top of the Empire State Building was originally a docking station for airships.
Exactly hammer of the gods
Plant plays the harmonica so beautifully, I wish he had played it more often.

The Hindenburg was a Zeppelin!! Robert the singer plays the harmonica! As far as i know...they never played this live.
For me it's John Bonhams drumming that makes Zep instantly identifiable. Nobody hit the drums quite like he did
The Old airship was called the Zepplin hence the bands name
