    I used to think most diode lasers were just glorified toys especially compared to my big expensive co2 lasers, but the XTool D1 changed my mind with their new diode technology giving more power then I thought possible. co2 Lasers better watch out cause this thing packs a powerful punch.

    Hi Chad, air-assist, while very important for keeping the beam from diffusing, won't help with cutting acrylic. 405nm diode lasers use visible light that passes almost unimpeded through clear acrylic - since nothing is absorbed, no heat is generated and acrylic is largely unaffected. CO2 lasers use long wavelength IR to which Acrylic is totally opaque. If you ever get the chance to play with a thermal imaging camera, try looking through glass or Plexiglass -both appear jet black. You can surface engrave clear acrylic if you paint it black or stick on some builder's tape - the coating burns, transferring some of the heat to the acrylic and melting it. I've read that more powerful diode lasers can cut through darkly coloured acrylic, though I've never tried that - the CO2 laser is the correct tool for cutting acrylic and does it well. Btw, nice relaxing & informative video, thanks for that :-)

    • @bobtnailer
      @bobtnailer ปีที่แล้ว

      Howdy, Gordo! I’m curious about your comment about the air assist keeping the beam from diffusing…
      I’ve had CO2 lasers (including two 75W Epilogs that I still use daily) for about 20 years, and this is the first I’ve heard / read about protecting beam integrity with air assist. The only time we use air assist is when we need to protect against flame-up when cutting materials like plastics, acrylics, and wood. The air is blown at (or near) where the beam contacts the material, and *almost* eliminates any flaming.
      Does it serve a different purpose on short-wave lasers, such as the one in Chad’s video? Hoping to learn something new here…. :)

    • @gordo8189
      @gordo8189 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bobtnailer Hi Bob, I think the wavelength is a major factor in determining how much smoke affects the beam. My first laser cutter was a purple diode laser and smoke definitely affected the beam quality when cutting or engraving. I did a lot of tests (as one does when starting out) and blowing away the smoke gave thinner, deeper lines and less 'browning' of light materials close to the cut. I moved to a 60W CO2 laser years ago and haven't noticed the same defocusing of the spot due to smoke, though, as you say, air is essential to stop the work-piece from igniting. This makes sense - driving glasses cut through the haze by blocking blue light and a thermal-imaging camera can 'see through' mist. The wavelength of a CO2 laser (and IR cameras) is hundreds of times greater than either the wavelength of a blue diode laser or the size of smoke particles.

      No, it has a hard time with MANY colors of Acrylic (White and Clears are worst but not the only ones. Anything with Blues in the 400-450nm range or so), Glass, thicker woods. CO2 can cut 3/4” or more and Diode’s can’t (cleanly).
      I have both and even a K40 can Engrave and Cut MANY things even the new 20 Watters still can”t.

    Fantastic video! Thank You! Since this is a CNC based system, this question is of interest. Is it possible to replace the laser head with a 3D printer head and a milling head? As far as I understand, the head of this machine only moves along the X and Y axes. For 3D printing and milling, you also need the head to move along the Z axis as well. Thank you!

      I wouldn't recommend changing out the head for CNC router or 3D printing I have found those all in one machine though can do multiple things cannot do anyone of them well. This machine like you said does not have an powered Z height control so this would not be possible anyways. I am a advocate for dedicated machines. I have a review on the longer LK5 which has proven to be a great 3D printer and though I do not have one the onefininity has got my vote as far as router CNC goes at this point.

      Yeah the k40 or co2 lasers do require much more user adjustment and maintenance.
      This is what's considered a diode laser and these don't have any water, no mirrors, the only maintenance is keeping the lens clean with a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol.
      Diode are perfect for people getting started. Co2 lasers or more for people getting into serious production and require speed and cutting power.

      Welcome to the laser world. No feature quite like that yet though that would be awesome. I would say it will really come down to practice testing and learning your materials as all the materials you use will be a little bit different. I use a sharp pointy tool to see if the object is moving freely without moving the main material at all because if it needs more passes you can always send the job again as long as you don't move the material.

    Some questions: 1] Does it come with the software to be able to make your own design? 2]If so, can you load/scan in a design? 3] if not, what software do you recommend? 4] If you place this on a surface to engrave, do you need to secure it down so it does not move during the engraving process? Thanks!

    • @ChadsCustomCreations
      @ChadsCustomCreations  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey John, it does come with free software for running the machine and it covers all of the basics. I will have to check if you can if you can scan into designs or not but I do know that you can import images and SVGs right in there. If you do want to go a little deeper into designing your own images I highly recommend inkscape which is also a free software that I use for making vector images which translate perfectly to the laser or another machines.
      As for mounting the machine in my experience needs no mounting as it never shifted itself at all during any of my test and I had it running at full speed.

    It's very well priced - if it can match the Brother Scan & Cut, or even the LaserBox scan & cut features.
    Basically two modes, 1) software only - it cuts out what you engrave and you work with that image to do this in one-step prior to engraving. and 2) (which is really cool) - you have a camera attachment that scans a given area to image it, which you can then work with to cut out decals, or tiles. (Technically this can be done using a separate scanner I guess.) Does your recommended program support engrave and cut mark up in setup?

    • @ChadsCustomCreations
      @ChadsCustomCreations  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you can achieve all of this using lightburn software very easily. Though I will say not sure if you were planning to or not but you should not cut any vinyl stickers with lasers as it creates chlorine gases.

    I'm interested in using a laser to do inlays on guitar necks. The fretboards are hardwoods such as maple, rosewood or ebony. Although they are harder than the birch you tested, the cut only needs to be about 1.2 mm deep. Do you think this laser could do that? Would still be acceptable if it took more than one pass. Reasonably sure it would cut the mother of pearl or abalone fine but not sure about the hardwoods. If you get a chance, test a piece of hardwood. Thanks for the vid!

    • @ChadsCustomCreations
      @ChadsCustomCreations  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Slate doesn't take much power so I ran it at full speed I believe that is about 180/mms and I probably had it at full power. Not sure about laser box basic but with lightburn you can do what's called a flood fill which eliminates a lot of the traveling over blank spaces and basically keeps the laser on the parts that need to be engraved cutting down tike substantially.

    diodes can not cut acrylic due to the wavelength
    I have a similar module and use air assist. wood works like a charm but acrylic : use co2

      I saw someone else do a test and they could cut all acrylics except for clear, white, and blue.

    Really cool device! Really important on the extracting smoke/fume/particles. The company I work for makes those extraction units for lasers. That would be cool to do a demo together.
