    I lived in Flagler Beach in the 80s . There are many young people living there . It is a quiet wonderful place to live . It is not a Retire town my no means . What you see is a place where older people from all around feel safe and good about themselves to come and enjoy during the day . Remember Palm Coast . That you are looking at started off with only older people . infact there was not even a school bus that went to Palm Coast for many years . Flagler Beach is an older town . With a wonderful quiet type living style . At night that area your in changes . Then you see all the younger people out .

    I'm 37 and the median age in my neighborhood (Jacksonville) is 55. Not a retirement neighborhood by any means, but I like it. It makes me feel young! People are friendly and quiet. With that said, I've visited Flagler Beach multiple times and your observations are accurate. Definitely a much older vibe (i.e. snowbirds and retirees). I think Palm Coast is a similar vibe but more populated. A younger vibe can be found in St. Augustine (as you already know) and Jacksonville Beach. But those cities are very expensive.

  • @jeffsawyer2759
    @jeffsawyer2759 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This is the definition of a old Florida beach town. The white sand of the pan handle is nice but the summer is awful just trying to get around. I like Flagler for the slow pace, no traffic, great fishing, golfing and plenty of restaurants. I also like to be able to have the Atlantic on one side of the road and development on the other side. The city controls the development with a height restriction of approximately 32' to 35' (can't remember exactly). Tons of parks with hiking trails. This is a town I hope to retire to in under 10 years so I am happy with this place. I find the place awesome. I totally get if you have a younger family why you may not like as much. Good luck with your travels.

      @@MichaelBordenaro Jacksonville is the youngest big city excluding Gainesville even younger than Miami but I doubt you’d like Jacksonville then Irlando is like 3rd youngest average age in Florida but I doubt living in Orlando would appeal to you. I’m over 40 so I’m about the same age as half of Florida’s non senior citizen residents. Very few Floridians are under age 25 but then all of America is aging just some states faster than others

    This is one of my favorite beaches on the east coast. It's close to St Augustine. It may not be for everyone, but it suits me right down to the ground. I don't go to beaches for bars and restaurants anyways. I like the isolation factor. That's why I prefer the Forgotten Coast of Florida along 98 from St Marks to Eastpoint and Apalachicola, and further west to Mexico Beach.

    I am not sure when you visited Flagler but you are way off about the whole older crowd. I have been going to Flagler for years and during the warm season most days the majority of the people there are actually probably considerably younger than you are. It can get quite busy during the summer especially on weekends. I personally love the whole area from Flagler north all the way to St. Augustine beach. Yes it is more like an old Florida small beach town but that's the beauty of it and the beach itself with its cinnamon colored sand is for sure one of the most beautiful beaches in Florida. There are no high rises or anything fancy there for sure but I think that is what gives it its charm.

    Grew up here 26 years, whole life. Only had a couple of kids on my block. Parents didn't care what we were doing, most of the time it was something stupid. Everyone worked hard. Never any Ferrari’s always corvettes and classics. But I am afraid the last few years, this place that is very special to me, where all my memories are. If you drive through town you might know why. People coming here don't have the same respect for the land or people that you would have seen 10 years ago. Theres a reason people sing about small towns, there is more to them then you can see.

    6 months late on commenting. I'm in the Philly area and starting the search process for a move to Florida. My Father and Step mother moved to Palm Coast 7 years ago (they are 75 years old). My Mother moved to Daytona a few years ago (75 years old). And my sister just moved to that same area this week. I'm thinking Saint Augustine is going to be the place for me (I'm 52). That said, I still find Flagler kind of charming. My point of reference are New Jersey beach towns. Forgive me if I find Flagler to be more quiet and quainte than run down. I enjoy the sleepy vibe of the place and it's an excellent getaway from the insanity that can be Daytona. In Flagler you get Bike Week, Daytona 200 Week, rocket launches, tons of golf, etc... but you aren't stuck in the thick of it. Tortugas is a great place to hang out, as is Finn's. And yes, the demo is older (i.e. Funky Pelican patrons), but I do think the town is in a phase of revitalization. It appears to me to be on the uptick. I'd bet that in a few years time, a real estate investment there will pay dividends. My parent's home in the R section (ohhhh the bad section) of Palm Coast has doubled in value over 7 years. Flagler is sleepy. The locals want to keep it that way. But, the sprawl is going to have to go somewhere. I think you can get in cheap there. One of the few places left.
    P.S. Yes, the sand there is bizarre, coarse, and it kind of sucks. My daughter hates it. But they do get a lot of sea turtle hatchings along the coast.

  • @Atlanticmoonsnail
    @Atlanticmoonsnail 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Flagler seems to sustain a lot of storm damage and it serves as a beach outlet for Orlando as does Daytona & NSB. It does have good surf. I would probably look in the Indialantic area if I were to move back. Although, now is not the time to buy.

  • @hudsterboy
    @hudsterboy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I have to comment because, well, I live here. I've always lived in cities. Born and raised and lived in the NYC area most of my life, then in Los Angeles. Flagler is a weird mix of people. It's mainly middle class boomer retirees from the Northeast. I would say that mix is around 70% conservative suburban types, and 30% old artsy hippie types. Add to that seasonal snowbird types from those same areas, and even some European travelers from Jan to May, then loads of local tourists that come in for the day or a week in the summer.
    The "run down" look I would argue is more "not developed". Run down implies that it's not maintained. It is, however there's no real attempt to cultivate an overall look. Eg. there are old and ugly commercial buildings across the st. from the Pier and coming in from the bridge. There are also some quaint buildings in and around. One odd feature is that the most attractive and charming houses are not along the beach but a block or more in. But yeah, there's nothing that gives Flagler Beach any distinct character other than no character. I think part of this is intentional and the locals are fine with the amount of attention that it gets.
    If you are a Gen X type, like me, it will probably have little to no appeal. Nothing punk rock or exciting here unless you like live, classic rock at a local bar, or attending a drum circle on the beach. There is no local art community showing their experimental films, or music scene, or theater group. If you ask anyone what their favorite independent band or movie is, you'll get back the most obvious reply. There's a reason I moved back to California twice, in the last 10 years. However I can say very honestly that at this point, I have zero interest in being anywhere else.

      @@MichaelBordenaro There’s really no decent surfing there. I’ve been doing tours every night after my 9-5 job except Wednesday this month so I’m burned out dealing with large groups and competing for parking or lines at the post office daily for example since it’s tourist season in St Augustine now. Funny - a middle age guy with receding graying hair commenting on how its an "older beach" in an almost judgmental sort of way. "Old" is relative and there are plenty of people who would hang that tag on you (the spring break crowd). I visited a friend in Palm Coast in November. There are plenty of young families in Flagler County. Went to his 7 year old son's baseball game - saw them first hand. I enjoyed the area so much I bought a lot and am going to build a house there this year. I don't want to live in a retirement community and Flagler County isn't that. It has a good mix of all kinds of people. I live in Northern California and it looked damned good to me.

  • @Nickmele27
    @Nickmele27 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Unfortunately, in the past 15 years Flagler Beach has really taken a beating. The pier is nearly 1/3 the length it was originally and hurricanes take a chunk out of it each time one hits. Hurricane Matthew nearly destroyed the entire town, and Hurricane Irma did a number on it too.

    • @MichaelBordenaro
      @MichaelBordenaro  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It definitely shows. We took a beating from hurricane Irma down here in Miami Beach as well. But if you look at the way things are here today you would never know

    • @Nickmele27
      @Nickmele27 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MichaelBordenaro oh no doubt. But Flagler Beach is a small town with limited resources and tax income, so the bounce back takes a lot longer. If you haven’t already, take a look at the aftermath from Hurricane Matthew here. Luckily the state footed most of the bill since it’s a state road. And the states fix for the beaches were to pile rocks where the dunes were. Pathetic lol

Flagler is getting more commercial as time goes on. Soon, they will build the new hotel right across A1A from you are walking.
