I lived in NY for the first 30 years of my life. When I moved away from there (2001), I realized just how far your money can go in a place where you can rent/mortgage a home for a 1/4 of that price and get 3, 4 times the space and make more money. I just don’t see the value in being single and paying $5700 for a small @$$ apartment. You might as well go get a mortgage. Ridiculous

The massive microwave is actually also a convection oven. I have one and they work great as a microwave and as an oven. The Helmsley Building has an electrical code based on the railroad where it gets its power from. The Helmsley Building gets its power from Metro North, not Con Ed. You either love this duplex and see potential or you won’t either way it’s always nice to see what New York has to offer, so thanks Cash. Outside of the apartment being stuck in the 80’s I think the best features are the tall ceilings and the second floor entry. Charlie will sell that shortly. The building with laundry is nice enough, though I don't know how far it is to the subway. The apartment is, indeed, a unique layout that wouldn't work for everyone, and having so many steps from the bedroom to the bathroom would be a deal-breaker for me. But the mezzanine office with its separate entrance could be useful to the right person. The living area and bedrooms are large by NYC standards, and the lack of a full-sized oven wouldn't impact most people, though tall folks might object to the stovetop location. The price is high for a one-bedroom. (Sorry, Charles.)

Insane New York rental prices have entered the realm of science fiction. 😱 Renting = throwing your money out the window unless there is an option to buy. I was born in The Bronx in 1953. Later, my family rented a lovely, big two bedroom apartment in Hudson (on Warren Street) over a men's clothing store. Free time and temp courtesy of the big flashing red light sign right outside the livingroom window 😄. All was very affordable. The Grand Union supermarket was a few minutes walk down the street, complete with a cop on the corner keeping an eye out for bad guys. I moved to The Netherlands in 1990 and live in a somewhat exclusive village in a big brick 3-bedroom home with attached garage and a nice back yard. My mortgage? Less than $100 a month. Including utilities, internet and homeowners insurance, it all comes to less than $600 a month. Lotsa luck, New Yorkers!

I live in NYC from 1995-2005 and loved it so much. My fave place to live was in LIC right off the NR (at that time) bc we could have a beater car that we did alternate street parking for free (one of us just had to remember to move it on street cleaning days so it didn’t get towed) we could literally see the above ground subway from our apartment, it was 3 stops into Manhattan to transfer to the midtown green line, 7 stops to transfer to the midtown red line. But right by the apartment if we’d walk, within 3 blocks, there was an Asian fruit and veg stand, a well stocked grocery store, a wine and liquor store, a few good shops and dry cleaning, an awesome Halal butcher and an Asian seafood market, and quite a few amazing ethnic restaurants where the people who owned it were FROM the the county of the cuisine the were cooking, even a Dunkin by the subway! Also very nice churches and some mosques, that would hold community events. We could also bike to a few museums. We had a newly refurbished 1940’s apartment with some original tile and stained glass and brick, steam heat, two bedrooms and a balcony style terrace with a rooftop access where you could see all of Manhattan skyline f from Washington Heights down to Brooklyn -for $1950/mo. So we had our bedroom an office/guest room, a kitchen, living room, and one and a half baths. PLUS! We could ride a bit into Astoria and eat and shop or take the car into Queens and shop “almost” like a suburban atmosphere or take the car to Jones beach for concerts or if our rich friends invited us to their beach houses or skiing at Hunter mountain or Vermont. My husband died tho 😢 I loved it there so much. I stood and held my neighbors and saw the Trade Center fall. Have video.
My husband and I used to ride his bikes across the bridge to the tennis bubble on the red clay court and I would go to NYSC and swim and work out. And then we’d get brunch by the museums and walk thru and play around in the park. It’s a great place to live.
Edit well it was that was almost 20 years ago😮

this is over $5000... With that many stairs, and that small kitchen, and being street level, it needs to be a lot less. I'd be using the second-floor entrance as the main entrance and placing something heavy in front of the floor-level door like a large bookcase. If I'm going to be renting a space that has an increase chance of theft because of the where the main door is, I'm going to pay a heck of a lot less than $5000....
