    FYI, I'm moving again, and sadly this time, the price of a 40' HC container went from 3,400 USD to 14,300 USD. Ouch.

    Thank you Mario for demystifying the international moving process. I am a US Ex-pat living half time in Australia and the US. Two years ago I shipped a partial load to Australia and now want some of those possessions returned to the US. The items were never unpacked so it is rather straightforward. I have about 5 CBM weighing 600 kilos. I've gotten a quote for $250/CBM for Freight from Sydney to Boston which includes Bill of Lading Fee but doesn't include the trucking/pickup/delivery fee, Local co loader Charges, Customs, Terminal Charges, ISF AMS filing, duties and taxes.
    I can handle the trucking on both ends by renting a U-Haul truck but it is these other charges which sound like a lot of customs forms and paperwork have me worried. Should I be?
    Based on the cost of bringing our stuff here two years ago and the "full service" quotes I have gotten for the return trip, I am hoping to save some $$ by doing what I can myself. Thanks for any advise you can offer.
    Cheers,
    Steve

    • @MarioStingerPerpetualTraveller
      @MarioStingerPerpetualTraveller  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello Steve, I don't know. The problem in New York for example, if that you need truck with special licenses to go to port. So, if Boston is the same, you will have to see if they allow you to drive yourself to the dock, warehouse or container itself. The price are insane these days, too. It is Australia and US, so the forms are easy enough to fill my yourself.

    Thank you so much for this! Really helpful! Can I ask from your experience can I fit quite a bit of stuff in a 20ft container around my car? I’m trying to save on getting the 40ft. As I don’t have any large pieces of furniture just alot of boxes and flat pack.

    • @MarioStingerPerpetualTraveller
      @MarioStingerPerpetualTraveller  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depends on the car. Stuff as much as possible in the back of the container and make a mezzanine on top of the car and the hood as well. You can put a mattress or thin stuff (mattress, tabletop, TV) on the sides and even under the car. I have an SUV, so that means a lot of space there. And of course, inside the car. That's what I have done many times.

    This video helps out a bit. I'm looking into moving from the US to Philippines. And the thought of moving all/most my stuff there, is a little overwhelming. Some objects are big. Like two arcade machines. I'm not looking to bring my truck there.

      When I moved to the Philippines, I did it from Switzerland. Always move with my 200 kg massage, a huge buffet, an arcade machine and all appliances. Is you have a platform, that's not a problem. In Manila, people don't use tools, so 4 guys it most of it by hand. I use my dollies for the appliances. You can take a small truck to the house if you can't drive a container there direction.

    Thanks for sharing...I'm curious as to how you've loaded an unloaded your vehicle(s) into these. I've only checked with one company, and they don't provide a ramp to get the car up on the trailer. I guess using a towing service... How did you do it?

    • @MarioStingerPerpetualTraveller
      @MarioStingerPerpetualTraveller  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment. If you noticed in the video, I have done it 3 ways over the years. A ramp, a loading dock, and a flatbed towing. You do have to be careful with the towing because it might be lower than the container. To prevent that, you can ask to have a low chassis trailer for the container, which also makes it easier to load your goods. Good luck.

    I am thinking of the possibility of having a Tiny home or camper from a shipping container. I was thinking of the larger 45/48/53 foot container sizes possibly. Then maybe have each part stackable and separable. Possibly moved with a 18 wheeler double stacked.
    At the same time all of the shipping costs, taxes and import fees, possibly being told to go back or having stuff taken makes me think having a house boat would be better ideally in theory.

      I have never shipped vinyls, but I have shipped 10 times by fragile decorations and never broke any. My wine from Riedel... Well, that didn't survive. It is all the the packaging and how the movers are handling it. In HK and Canada, you should be okay. Not sure how you are coming to Canada, but as a Canadian returning, just make sure you don't have any boxes or items that is more than 10,000$ and you are all good for taxes.

    Hi, I don't know if you'd be able to help. A good friend is shipping a 45m3 of furniture including a baby grand piano, american Fridge Freezer plus a car into a 40ft high sided container. The shipping company has informed her only last week that the container will stay on the lorry and not be on ground level. Therefore, no matter who she tries to help her, she's really struggling to find how/who can arrange for the Piano to be placed safely and travel safely in the container along with her car. What would you suggest? Try and find a company to take off the container from the lorry; a company that supplies ramps (which seems impossible here in France) or forget the original shipper and just pay the extra for a removal company to do all this. The quotes ranged from 9000euro door to door service (but they wanted the money upfront) to 6000euro by the frieght forwarder company. The container is leaving South West France and is en route to the Canary Islands. Thanks for your suggestions!

Because even if you look on the MSC site and see that the boat is in Manila, it wouldn't tell you that your container has been offloaded. But, any company would know that. In Manila, you need to make sure you have your resident ID, the documents from DFA, Finance and customs to take your stuff out. And the fee at the port was 100 USD, not sure if it is still the same. But, they are fast, so it should be okay.

    • @MarioStingerPerpetualTraveller
      @MarioStingerPerpetualTraveller  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had the same problem in France as it was really expensive to offload the container, so I hired locals to help me offload. The small risk here is that you need to do it in 2 hours, so you need to make sure the people will show up. I hired 4 people separately and 3 showed up. We offloaded in the grass and in the driveway and let the truck go fast. In the US, all you need is an agent for clearing, you can do the rest. If it is not a diplomatic shipment, you have to be careful with taxes and gamma-ray scans as it can add 2,000$ to your total. In New York, I used a company to offload to their warehouse and then to my place after it was cleaned. I think it was about 900$. In France with locals, about 350$ for 4-5 hours per guy. You can rent a truck for the day by yourself, but the problem is that you will not be allowed at the port, so you need a trucker to take it out. The agent will know and fix that.

  • @timr1935

    You didn't mention the most important thing. How do you get your stuff from your house to the ship? Who loads the container? Is it the ship's crew or the shipping company you booked? Is the shipping company automatically asigned by the owners of the container? WHo owns the container? How do they unload the container at the other end: do they just put it on the ground and say "there you go" or is it a job for professionals? Who do you book with: a removal company, a ship or a container company?

    • @MarioStingerPerpetualTraveller
      @MarioStingerPerpetualTraveller  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on the country. Sometimes I use the shipping company. But, they are too expensive, I get people I know or people for a day. Generally, you will load at the container directly et your house, if you have the space in the street. If not, you pack it a few blocks away and use small trucks to take the stuff from your place to the container

      @@MarioStingerPerpetualTraveller Thanks! In my case, my stuff is in the UK and needs to get to the US. But I am in Europe. It's all packed and waiting and I don't think I would be able to go there in person to unload the stuff. All I know is that somehow it has to get onto a boat and accross the ocean to the USA... I'm not sure if I'm looking for an English removal company or or an English container company or if I have to book with an American removal company on the other side once it arrives.

      I used TransAtlas Moving Services. When you move with more than one vehicle, make sure they will allow it, and if you have one vehicle exempt of tax, make sure it is the most expensive. I lost a motorcycle in the Philippines because it had 200 km on it, and they considered that used. Took ma a year to get it release from the port. And when I did, the port fees were more than the price of the bike and I abandoned it. Good luck with your move.

    Ok I am a little confused about one thing. You said Pack your car and then take it all out and put it in the container. Are you packing your car and your household stuff IN the same container ? If so do they keep all your stuff and also your car ? do you go AROUND you car to get your household stuff? I am trying to figure out how to pack it. Do I put the car in and THEN load all the household boxes and then when it gets to port I unload all household boxes and then they do whatever to my car and then I come back to get it later ? Also can I get the engine number before I leave from my mechanic and show them I already have it ? Trying to figure out how to do this kind of ALL at once so we can send our stuff and it's on it's way and a week or two later we leave. GOD this is stressful. But your videos are really helping. Watched the moving my stuff one and then this one. I'll watch all of them hopefully I avoid as many headaches as possible.

      Hello, I really need to make a complete video about that. Place the household goods first, a devide (2 sheets of plywood held in place by 2x4 (4 meters x 5 cm if you are outside US). Then your car. They will take the car out first and leave it at the port/customs). Your household will be delivered to your house in a few days. Then when the car is cleared, you can go and pick it up.

      Hello Janna. Yes, I do it all the time as we move around. Here are a few tips. I'll likely make a full video soon as I'm moving again.
      1. DO NOT use vacuum-sealable bags. They damage feathers in coats and duvets. Also, they can expand and damage your boxes
      2. Tape all sides of the boxes to make sure no dust or inserts can come in.
      3. Pack furs or genuine leather in paper bags
      4. Roll your shirts, dresses and pants instead of folding them.
      That's about it. I hope that helps.

      I have lived in Lebanon and Jordan, so I have an idea of your situation. In the US, you can sell your stuff for decent prices because you have eBay and Americans don't negotiate prices much. No IKEA in Beirut, so I sold my furniture for a good amount. But, my electric, appliances etc.. I moved it, because I couldn't sell them. In Jordan, I sold nothing, no one cured for what I had or offer low price. With the electricity in the US, I would say, don't bring your appliances at 50Hz, they will not work properly. Your furniture might be of higher quality (US like cheap) and if you can't get a good price locally, move it. If you take a 40 HC for the move, it will be about 7,000$ or so... if you are exempted of tax. You have your clothes and other valuables, is it worth the money? If so, move them. Moving to the US is common, so you should be able to get a company in UAE with branches in Texas. Use an international one. I just texted a friend for a referral. I'll get back to you ASAP.

    Just to be clear…you made a video about the price of moving with a shipping container in 2020, you posted the video in 2021 after prices had increased 10x. Why not change the costs to what it actually costs instead of what it cost 2yrs ago and prices that will likely never again exist? Just asking for a friend…

Also, surprisingly, I have moved 8 times in the last 12 years and the price of moving had not changed. 10x, not really and not everywhere. I was just quoted 4,640$ from Egypt to Columbia. So, that's like 30 % incease. Of course, Hong Kong to New York was 2,700$ and now it is 23,000$...
