    Oh, please do a video for steeking!! I'm super curious but afraid of the technique, lol, but I love stranded knitting and so many patterns require steeking to make cardigans. I also crochet so doing vertical lines should be easy, it's just the thought of cutting a piece that scares me...Your tutorials are the clearest on youtube so I'm sure it would be an amazing video

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      here's one advise! you will have to knit a swatch anyway. And when you are doing colorwork, that's typically no yarn you can redeem. So, just practise steeking on the swatch and see where it gets you :)
      the process is less scary than you think then...i mean if you spoil your swatch, what will happen? ;-)

    Great tips thanks Norman. I crochet as well as knit and I find my crochet hook helps a lot when knitting. For casting of I often get confused because I think in crochet terms like sc. I love the embellishments tip and I will see if I can use my crochet techniques to do duplicate stitch for patterns 😁.

    • @NimbleNeedles

      yes absolutely! This is basically the duplicate stitch and you can use it create lovely well vines and leaf work! can look very stellar on socks if done right. No need to just go straight :)

    Possibly useful to folk picking up stitches with a crochet hook - you can pick up multiple stitches with the hook before transfering them to the needle, which I find makes it go a lot faster and smoother.

      I feel you are overthinking this. These are no new techniques, just different ways to get there. The crochet bind off and the standard bind-off create the same edge. So there is no different "when". As to why...well..because crochet is easier for you or you produce neater results :)

    Loved the tips!! The technique of adding collumns of stitches in the middle made me think if it would help to create ribbing... I'll try it latter!

    • @NimbleNeedles

      awesome! though I am not entirely sure how you would think it will help with ribbing. But sure, do try and let me know how it went!

      @@NimbleNeedles you know that spot between the "last knit" and the "following purl"? I try my best to make that "gap" go away, but I didn't succeeded yet. So now I tried adding a column with the crochet hook in that same spot... Well.... The "gap" is gone, but the final result is not that beautiful as I thought. The knit has it own stretchiness, and a column of crochet doesn't stretch at all...
      So, what is left for me is being patient and keep trying to improve my abilities

    I'm so glad to hear someone else say that knitting and crochet can compliment each other. :) One of my favorite things to do is to create some "broomstick lace" via crochet and then add it as an edge to a knitted shawl or scarf. I haven't made socks just yet, but that's one of my next knitting projects. I very well might add an edging to the socks, but we'll see how they work up first. ;) Another nice thing about adding a crochet edge is that it can hide "mistakes" that were made along the edges if things look a bit too loose or too tight from one row to the next (or your cast on wasn't as "consistent" as you wanted it.) :D Adding an edging can also help to keep the edges from curling some.
    On a side note, my former mother-in-law used to be so good at crochet that she could take ANY knit pattern and convert it into a crochet pattern. I was so impressed by that skill and I hoped that someday I would get to the "experience" level where I would have the same ability. However, now that I am becoming more comfortable with knitting, I'm not sure if I still want to acquire that skill or not. ;) ;) As I'm teaching my youngest son how to knit (he's 13), he's learning it VERY quickly and he has stated that he is enjoying knitting more than crochet! o_0 While I would prefer that he enjoy crocheting more, I'm happy that he is at least enjoying yarn work. :) As they say, knit (or crochet) a child a hat and you keep him warm until he loses it. Teach a child to knit (or crochet....or BOTH!) and they will be warm for a lifetime! :D (Plus, they won't lose what they've created quite as quickly if they know how much time it took to make it.) ;) ;)
    Thank you once again for such a wonderful video. I will definitely be using these techniques in the future. :)

    • @snickiedude
      @snickiedude 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have had the tight chains issue but I learned to do foundation stitches. The only real chains are the ones you use to get the height of the first stitch. It's also great if you're working with a yarn that doesn't have a lot of definition where it's hard to see where to put your hook in the chain (like Lion Brand's Homespun yarn and some specialty yarns). And I find it more stretchy overall than a regular chain foundation. I've gotten better with the tension in my starting chains but I'll still use a foundation row if I can get away with it. Helps with counting too. Happy stitching!

  • @tracyvision
    @tracyvision 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I absolutely agree Norman, why choose between crochet and knitting? The crochet cast on is my go-to and I use my crochet hook to do all kinds of bind offs. I think the crochet hook is the perfect tool for binding off and I find it fun to figure out how to do different bind offs with my hook. I had to laugh at your caution to not fall into the habit of using a hook all the time because it might stall my progress as a knitter if I’m not used to managing the stitches with just my knitting needles (guilty!).

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      well, the bind off is no different than the standard bind-off so there's not much more to say.
      As for the cast-ons. Well, it's a combination of looks and stretchieness. The standard crochet cast-on is not all that stretchy but it does look pretty, right? and will mirror the effect of the standard bind off so that can be very neat for certain projects!

    Found this video about seven years too late? Lol. I learned some beginner knitting in 2007 but really fell in love with yarn crafts in 2014 when I learned to crochet (particularly after I learned to put the working yarn in my *left* hand instead of my right) and crocheted obsessively while in university. I even knitted a bottom-up hat with cabling using a crochet hook and some large stitch holders (I didn't have the right size knitting needles and I really wanted to make *that* hat). My cast-on was an accidental Tunisian crochet ish thing which made the edge kind of bulky, and I seamed it using slip stitch, which looks a little wonky because the yarn is dark and I wasn't consistent about where I put my hook from row to row in the seam. I frequently wear the hat in public in the winter and people who don't know better are generally complimentary of it. And tbh I think my stitch definition is better where I used the crochet hook versus where I used knitting needles lol, especially in the ribbing.
    Didn't really get much into proper knitting again until a year or two ago and crochet still features heavily in my (mostly unfinished) works. I exclusively use crochet bind off because I don't know any other way and haven't needed to learn another way. Sometimes if I have an exceptionally tight cable, I'll knit the cable off the cable needle with the crochet hook and slip the stitches at the end to the other needle (and hope I don't end up laddering - it's usually fine). I'm still an advanced beginner knitter though so eventually I'll have to learn, right? 😉

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      well, I would definitely say it's a crutch and and at one point, if you want to advance, you need to learn things properly. But, i mean tunesian crochet is a very valid art as well.

      @@NimbleNeedles hi Norman I just wanted you to know that I used the crochet hook method and wow I wish I’d known about it years ago it’s a real game changer I’ve never picked up stitches so neatly and quickly thank you sooo much I also used your technique for the end stitch so I don’t get that awful ear and that’s amazing too I can’t thank you enough for the things you have taught me 👏amanda xx🥰

    Thanks for making this. Binding off and picking up stitches often makes my hands hurt. As I was doing it last time I did think I could probably do this with a crochet hook, but didn't have the brain power to look it up. Now I know for next time :)

    Great video, Norman! I really need to get more comfortable with the crochet hook. I tried the provisional cast on method with the crochet hook, but I couldn’t figure it out and ended up using another method.

      @NimbleNeedles  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's really well worth some practice. Personally, I find the provisional cast-on with a crochet hook the only one that works for me consistently. All the others make me loose track too fast, loL!

      @@NimbleNeedles I have a method that has worked for me so far, but I see the value in knowing how to do both methods. Also I think I need to get my hands used to using the crochet hook. Maybe I should try crocheting some swatches to practice.

    This video is amazing. I thank you again for everything you do for us that are struggling a little. I was wondering if it would be OK for me to email you a pattern for a shirt that is confusing me?

      Awesome, glad you found this video helpful.
      As for your question: Actually, no it wouldn't be. Three reasons really:
      - forwarding a patter to a third party is creating a digital copy and that is against the copyright (no matter if the patter was free or not)
      - I have no idea about the intended fit or design, so I don'T feel it's my place to comment on another designer's pattern
      - I simply do not have the time. As it is, I typically spend more than an hour per day answer questions. If I was honest, that's already too much :(

    Grazie,Norman i tuoi lavori sono così precisi e "puliti"!
    Mi incuriosisce il tartan :la catenella si fa tra due punti diritti o su un punto rovescio preparato appositamente nel lavoro di base? Grazie

      Not sure if my italian is good enough to understand the question. But no, this is just plain stockinette stitch (so just knit stitches on the right side) and you go through each stitch.

    Yes, this 'knitting vs crochet' is bizarre. As a child at school I learned both. They were both part of 'the hand crafts' (or 'textile crafts'), as well as sewing and embroidery. In making your own clothing or home decorations it's best to combine more than one of those crafts.

    Wonderful! I need to know how to improve my ugly design on a sweater I'm knitting for a Star Trek fan friend. I knitted the famous Star Trek emblem in the middle of the sweater, but the edges are poorly shaped. Can I make them smoother or sharper?

      You could embroider over them with the duplicate or chain stitch.

    Love blending both techniques. The cast on and bind offs will be used alot as I find both these aggravate my sore left wrist.
    Do you use the same size hook and needles for bind offs? Or do you go with what your tension gives you?

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      well, that really depends on the project. Typically I would use the same or one size bigger. But yeah, if you are experienced you kinda can crochet a bit looser
