Changing the lyrics to "I must have said something wrong" from the original "I said something wrong" is I think better. The original line plainly admitted that the guy committed something wrong and is now longing. The revised line, well at least to me, is not necessarily not owning to the mistake, but more like an expression of knowing you did something wrong but you don't know exactly for sure what. I think the revised line is better because it is more consistent with the previous line "why she had to go, I don't know, she wouldn't say". So your girlfriend/wife left, and you know it must have something to do with what you said but you dont know for sure because she didn't tell you.
