There are so many other song's that I would put with this one. Angels Among Us by Alabama - Got To Stand For Something by Arron Tippin are just a few. It would be way to long of a list if I kept listing them - LoL
"The buttons on the radio didn't seem to work quite right, but it picked up that oldies show especially late at night." what a great line!!! Always loved that line!!
@ericlabeau There used to be a joke line saying "the buttons on the radio didn't seem to work quite right but it picked up K105 especially late at night"
I agree completely I don’t even know if I could hear the whole song without crying. I have listened to it three times in a row and still cried.Jus sain!
I have always loved this song and video. It wasn't until I got to watch this higher quality version that I was able to make out the emotion in the facial expression of Mrs. Malone's face near the end of the video when they go back to the scene of her as she's watching her son head off to war. Definite props to the actress who played her for being able to tug at my heartstrings in such a brief shot with nothing more than body language and facial expressions.
Great song, but tough song for me to listen to. I came home, and many did not. In the early part of my time in Vietnam, I went with a buddy to fix a phone line near the 15th Aerial Port, at Danang Air Base. A group of men were using forklifts to load Air Force C130s, and we wondered what the shiny boxes were on the pallets they were loading. Then we saw. Stacks and stack of aluminum caskets being shipped home, the bodies of young men, mostly. Just like us. I don't care if anyone "thanks me for my service" or not. I care that the sacrifices of those went before us were not in vain, and that we preserve and protect the ideals they fought for. Semper fi.
i know how you feel i lost some good friends in afgan and iraq some i went to basic with so we became good close so hearing about them being gone or actually watching one go its not easy. I do remember having to go to the VA about a year ago and i saw and old Nam vet so I thanked him and welcomed him home i could not believe it but he started crying and told me i was the first one outside the VA to welcome him home as he lost his family while he was in the war so he had nobody to come home to and even after all these years nobody thanked him or welcomed him home to me that's just sad. and semper fi you jarhead from a retired army soldier
My son, USMC, fought in Afghanistan and returned a deeply wounded warrior, Semper Fi. My dad, USMC, served in Pacific and his nephew served in Korea, my cousin never walked quite right again, later buried in Arlington. My 6 Uncles fought in WW2 in the army, navy and USMC Europe and Pacific. All said the same, “we fought to preserve and protect this great country.” Every one of them heroes in my eyes.
I can't fight for my country, it's 2024 and Canada has basically fallen, my home has pretty much become indian, But I sure as hell respect those who fought for what this country used to be, and the same for the young men who fought for other country's too. wether good or bad, a soldier is just a man following orders
@@hudsynburkholder8204 Yeah I think it was. brings me back to my age when I didn't appreciate country music. Now I regret that. I can't get enough of it.
My pap pa who served in world War 2 passed away December 8th he was born in 1938 he's was an amazing man I was not his grandchild but he treated me as such and he never made me feel any different from his other real grandchildren
This song is so powerful. I can't listen without tears - I can't imagine the strength it takes to sing it... but it must be sung. Thank you for leaving this mark on the world.
I have never been able to listen to this song and not tear up. So many young men and women have sacrificed so much for us. They gave their all is not just a saying. They gave us OUR future by giving up everything they had and everything they were ever gonna have.. Most of them did that between the ages of: 18 to 25. Humbling.
God Bless the men and women who risk their lives for the rest of us even when they don't have to, and ease the pain of the friends and family left behind by those who have lost their lives protecting us. I am so happy to finally see this video in high quality again. Long gone are the days when I would catch it on CMT. The "saw a soldier pull me out" line still gives me chills and goosebumps.

Imagine how the lady felt essentially giving away that car. There's no way that car was only worth $1000 to her. It has way more sentimental value then $1000 even if she didn't know the type of car it was her sons car. she waited for a long time to sell it and was probably reminded everytime she saw it in the barn
I wonder if she felt so much sorrow over the car still being there that she just wanted it gone. But in real life, it wouldn't have simply sat there all that time. Some family member would ended up with it. It wouldn't have looked that nice after sitting for 30 years. Even not being driven and covered up, it was in a barn, not a climate controlled museum. There would have been a lot of rust.
Didn't there used to be different lyrics... "What a thrill I got when I sat behind the wheel" ? I remember he said: "I felt a little guilty as I counted out those bills, but she got what she wanted, and I got me a thrill." -- Anybody else remember it that way?
Not really a country music guy, but I stumbled across this song during my Enclave run of the hoi4 mod Old World Blues. The story the song tells is excellent and it's one I'll sometimes switch to between the Conelrad broadcasts.
This was written for the Vietnam vets originally. rightly so. But as a three tour Iraq vet, I feel this one still. As for us OEF/OIF vets, we wont get our due, but that's ok! That's what we signed up and served to do anyway!
It would be nice to know who wrote this song and if it was a real Soldier or if it's just a made-up song. If it was written about a real Soldier and his car then it would be nice to see some of the proceeds go to help veterans that did make it home with a lot of scars

I’m a metal head, but I love this song. Great tune, vocals, lyrics, and story.

That math doesnt check out, if he was born in 38, he would have only been 7 when the war ended. unless he served for the germans.
