When I first read about all the upgrades Rad made to this model, I got really excited about it. Torque sensor, 20” wheels, emphasis on battery & electrical safety, etc. However, the 120lb weight limit on the rear rack is too limiting to me. If all you’re doing is carrying little kids around or riding solo to the grocery store, that’s plenty of capacity. But as someone who regularly takes 2 kids with me TO the grocery store (and proceeds to buy a weeks worth of groceries) on my cargo bike, I’m hitting that 120lb weight limit quickly. Not to mention it doesn’t allow me to take my wife on a date or pick up my 17 year old from band practice, all of which I’ve done with my Gen 1 Tern GSD (which has a 220lb weight limit on the rear rack). If that kind of capacity were reserved for more premium mid-drive bikes I’d understand, but even the Lectric Xpedition has a 200+ lb capacity on the rear rack. I’m surprised more reviewers haven’t called this out, particularly since cargo bikes are marketed as vehicle replacements
The RadWagon 5 is a super solid ride for a cargo e-bike. But, If that weight issue is a deal breaker on the rear platform, check out the Lectric Xpedition 2.0, it has about a 300lb rear rack capacity and might be worth a look. here is a link: ebreviewdeals.com/Xpedition-2 Hope that helps! -Mike
I was really leaning towards this with allthe upgrades they made, but I'm concerned with the spoke/rear wheel safety concerns it's presenting with. Any thoughts about that?
Thanks for the question! To make sure I'm answering you correctly, can you help me better understand what spoke/rear wheel safety concerns are your referring to? -Justin
Thank you for your thorough review. I am very interested in a bike being as quiet as possible under power. Ideally, I just want to hear the wind. If you could incorporate instrumented noise testing, I think it would be a great value-add as a review.
That's a great suggestion Dan! I'll see what we can do moving forward. -Mike
I wish some of the longer business e-bike companies that do design cargo bikes would develop one with a mid motor option (starting at 750 watts) and dual battery capability. :) Purpose? Not only to bring home groceries, haul my doggies to the park, but also BIKE TOURING :)
While I would love it if Rad came out with a mid-drive option for the RadWagon, I'm not sure they want to enter the $5K+ e-bike market. For what it's worth, I was very impressed with the comfort of the ride on this one.
Of course, a mid-drive will always feel a little different than a hub motor. You could check out the Tern GSD, or even the OROX if your wanting a mid-drive cargo bike.
I would also not worry as much about wattage on the mid-drives, as most are rated at 250 (nominal) but are plenty powerful enough as long as you have something good like the Bosch Cargo Line.
Looks like it would be very rear-heavy - especially when loaded. I've had a couple of cargo bikes over the last decade and always found them too long and heavy for my taste. It can be difficult to find a "parking space" for a long, HEAVY bike. Complaints aside, Rad does have a nice line of reasonably priced, practical bikes.
Those are fair points (even the tradeoffs), and yes, Rad's bikes seem to get better and better. Thanks for sharing! -Mike
Can a male at 220 pounds ride this bike?
Easily!
Yep! The max rider weight is 275 lbs and another 120 lbs as long as that's no more than a 350lb total weight. So, that's a long way of saying yes. -Mike
