Tarkovsky also directed Solaris, which is an absolutely amazing book as well. Stanislaw Lem wrote the book, and Tarkovsky directed. Truly amazing artists and art.
The tradition of burning a giant wooden sculpture of a man comes from the Spanish in Santa Fe. First one was in 1719 and happens every year around Labor Day. It is followed by a crafts fair

Stalker is not the name of the character, it describes what the character does, a sort of guide that brings a person to the Zone, which is illegal. Great movie and great channel!
I thought it was an extension of the "wicker man" festivals in which pagan societies burned a giant man filled with crops and livestock as an offering for a bountiful year and was also made into a horror film, but i guess it has many influences
The filming of stalker contributed to the directors death. Interesting backstory. Be cool if you do longer form stuff on things like that. Gonna check your channel properly soon! Great shorts 🥳🥂🏆
Interesting story for «Burning Man» event. That reminds me that I never finish viewing «Stalker» (i should compete it). I think it is known that Tarkovsky was exposed to radiations during filming of that film, which caused him to have cancer. He died in France.
Back in 2007, a serial 🔥 pyromaniac 🔥 from San Francisco, Paul Addis went to Burning Man and burned “The Man” down ahead of schedule to crash the party. 😂😂
Crazy fact about Stalker: it was resposi le for the desth of the cast, director, and some of the production staff because they filmed in an area that was heavily polluted by chemichal spills done by the nazis when they attacked the Soviet Union. All of them would die of some form of cancer years later
When they made that movie they had the main actor laying in radioactive water ! He ended up dieing along with alot of the other cast and crew and now Russians go into the chernobal site and drink radioactive water . There's a tv show called cursed films that talks about it
Larry Harvey said otherwise in interviews while he was still alive. He said it was a San Francisco solstice beach party that got too big so they moved it to the desert where they wouldn't be bothered.
Wait just a minute. The druids burned giant men made of wickerwork. They put prisoners inside and sacrificed them. The burning man is way way older than that movie.
Ok… but Who… (and Why)… built the giant wooden man and set him on fire in the first place? It’s not like the Cacophony society set this up. This little history connection has nothing to do writhe the origin of the actual event. This ‘Zone Trip’ brought Burning Man Mainstream. That’s it.
Now i heard something about the first burning man being on a san fransisco beach. I thought it was just a group of friends getting together and the party just got bigger. I had no idea it was started by these experiences. I wonder... any else been on a derive? ;)
I thought there was already movies called burning man. There's even a film called The Wicker Man that came out in 1973 that could have inspired burning man festival
That makes sense cuz stalker is a post-apocalyptic film, and at burning Man everybody seems to want to dress mad Max post-apocalypse like, also how could you forget the stalker games there's like a bunch of them
Well... thats not quite the premise or story of Stalker. Also Larry Harvey and Jerry James might disagree with your explanation as they where the guys who started burning man by burning an 8ft wooden "man" for the summer solstice in 1986, the same year the cacophony society was founded by the way. The society also wasn't inspired by Stalker, has no connection to burning man and by 1990 they had held way more than 4 events. Your version of alternate history is cool but in reality these three things aren't actually connected.
The **Cacophony Society** played a significant role in the early development of the Burning Man festival. Founded in the 1980s in San Francisco, the Cacophony Society was a loosely organized group of artists, pranksters, and countercultural enthusiasts who embraced absurdity, subversion, and unconventional experiences. They were known for organizing surreal and provocative events, often blending art, performance, and social commentary. In 1990, members of the Cacophony Society, including **John Law** and **Michael Mikel** (also known as "Danger Ranger"), were instrumental in moving the Burning Man event from Baker Beach to the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. This shift marked a turning point for the festival, as it allowed for larger-scale installations, more radical experimentation, and the creation of the temporary city known as **Black Rock City**. The Cacophony Society's ethos of spontaneity, creativity, and anti-establishment culture heavily influenced Burning Man's principles, particularly its emphasis on participation, self-expression, and community. While the Cacophony Society itself eventually faded, its legacy lives on in the spirit of Burning Man and other countercultural movements.
@@enterthevoidIiyes the cacophony society members helped build the 1990 "man" and after the Golden Gate Park Police told them Baker Beach was not an option to burn a 40ft wooden man for their solstice festival it was members of the society who suggested the black rock site as well as other possible locations... thats not the point, the point is that the society did not just stumble upon a 40ft burning man in the nevada desert like he says. They also had no technical connection to burning man as he implies. And while yes some members of the society where inspired by stalker (the plot of which he got wrong) specifically Carrie Galbraith who organized/promoted the "Zone Trips" the movie was not the overall inspiration for the group as he suggests. The cacophony society is the evolution of the suicide club (1977) which was all about facing fears and testing yourself in daring experiences. All im saying is his information is wrong

Very cool history connection
except its incorrect, the first men were burned on baker beach in california . it only moved to nevada when it got too big to host on the small beach
@realseanzi that makes sense to. Ill collect the reasoning and maybe one day look into it. sometimes things converge especially amongst artists
